- Eric asked me to make a knife block on Twitch! Here's a great simple woodworking project!
Someone asked me on my Twitch livestream to make a knife block, so I decided to give it a shot with a big chunk of basswood that I had. As always, I wanted to add a little something extra, so I angled it back instead of forward and embedded a little shelf to hold a recipe book while cooking.

Several people have mentioned that it needs some sort of drainage (which I never thought of). If that's a concern, you could route a little drainage channel to the back when cutting out the area for the knives.
Thanks!
I Like To Make Stuff great video as usual
Can you lower the center of gravity? To make it more difficult to knock over
Drainage = turn the block upside down
Wet knives should not be put in the block anyway
If you want it heavier, put something heavy inside the wood, make a hole and glue it in
I Like To Make Stuff have you made a table tennis set up? If not, that would be SO cool
I've never seen a knife block with drainage before...
You're right, the basswood looks completely unassuming 'til you applied the tung oil, and then, it's like, "Oh, _wow_!" The variations in the grain color really make for both an interesting piece, as well as a beautiful piece of kitchen kit. A truly amazing project, Bob. One of your most beautiful to date.
Little advice I learned from making lighthouse shaped lamps with my dad : If you are worried about it being top heavy, you can easily use the router to make a few grooves underneath the base and add some thick lead wire (usually it's sold as solder for joining metal gutters) or even use a folded flat lead sheet. Just remember to cover it with rubber to hide it and make it slip proof
Great build! I would have made all the knife slots the same, so there's no restriction on what knife goes where
I was planning to buy it and gift it now going to make it and gift it. Thanks Bob :-)
Excellent!
Thanks to you bob I'm obsessed with rung oil when I make projects. It looks so beautiful, nice work.
Did anyone else catch at 2:35 the dirty sounding "...could slide in the hole, not just lay down on top of it" ? I was like, what did Bob just say? Smile & giggle every now & then, it makes everything more fun!
I have to say. The difference in production quality from your early videos and now is amazing. Your energy level is much better now. Great channel.
I fully expected to see a Picciuto book in here. Thanks for not disappointing.
Nice. If you're making this, do consider where the block will live. Most places I've been have cabinets over the counters. The common, shorter, forward angled knife block design allows for pulling the knives in that limited vertical space, while this design wouldn't.
Bob that looks fantastic. I especially like the way the grain stands out. That's why I like tung oil.
Thanks for sharing
All about that Bass wood! Beautiful grain and nice job showing it off.
Bob, I love the design and the approach you took. I think one thing that might make a great addition to this would be a plexiglass shield (perhaps something you could slide in place as needed) to both hold a book open, and to protect it from spills and splashing. But that's not criticism, just an idea for how I might do one. Thanks for the inspiration!
this is one of my favorite channels in youtube
Awesome build 👍🏻.
The shelf will also be great as an IPad stand for people that use it for recipes too
Thanks! Yeah, that's definitely how we'll use it more :)
I was thinking the same thing. Kindle ....
good video. I enjoyed watching it.
No way! I literally bought the materials to make a knife block yesterday. Coincidence is great.
I am amazed at how much the Bass wood popped after the Tung Oil was applied. NICE!
Excellent project, Bob (as always). I read through the comments and didn’t any mention of this, (if I missed it, sorry), since a ‘template’ with each knife was made then routed it out, each knife will have to be returned to its slot. If you took the biggest knife and made all the slots that size, then any knife could go into any slot. Also, if you were making this project as a gift, unless you had their knives you wouldn’t know what size slot would be needed, just a thought...
I don't even cook, but I'm here, just watching and enjoying. Keep it up!
That's cool, I don't cook either ;) Thanks!!
I Like To Make Stuff but u bake the ravioli
A Wild Ymarc Appeared! His wife "like to cake stuff."
Am I the only one who hovered my mouse at 4:23 and watched the grain pop with that Tung oil a couple of times? Awesome how it stands out, even my 6 year old went "WOW" Great Video Bob :)
Man, that wood is beautiful!
Bravo, chap.
Wow, that basswood looks really good all finished. Great vid, Bob- thanks!
A little bit late, but i also saw a neat knifeblock design where you make a wooden box and fill it with skewers, sharp side down, you can put a bit of glue down at the bottom if you want to secure them but then you can put in all sorts of shapes of knives
That's my Thursday lunch time viewing sorted - another great project Bob.
Excellent! Have a great lunch (and day) !
I was not expecting the wood to have that much going on until you cleaned it up. Great job as always!
Thanks Kyle! yeah, it surprised me too!
This is such a cool project. Only thing I would improve would be to add a lip to hold the pages of the book open or something. Will have to think on that. Nice work Bob.
I have been meaning to make a knife block. Super helpful Bob!
love videos like this that don't require lots of tools to make
I love your videos!! Glad to see you making so many diverse ones. Have a quick "upgrade" idea for the block, adding a pin in the book holder ledge at each corner so when you are using the book and have it open to a certain page the book will stay open to that page.
Keep up the awesome videos!!!
Stephen
Stephen Kalicki I completely agree, I was thinking of a V-shaped lip though. That way the book sits in the channel between the lip and the block - although possibly tricky to turn pages with that solution.
Me: *doing a delicate part of a project*
*I like to make stuff uploads a video*
Me: *drops everything* WOOOHHH
Thanks for another great project and video, Bob. Keep doing what you do.
jhunphillip123 it is the downfall of watching videos like this... always more cool projects to work on
I as well just bought some new knives and try to make do with an old butcher block from another knife set. Great job Bob and thank you for the guidance
Congrats on 1 million subscribers Bob!
Thanks David!!
Excellent job! I just started a woodworking company... sort of.. mostly for friends and family for now. My first paid job is a knife block. Thanks for the video!
very nice knife block, and very well made, gets my vote
a very good knife holder and u showed how easily to make thanks Bob keep it up and do more stuff because I like to make stuff
Hey! Nice book! :)
+Make Something yeah man!
David needs to write a book one day, eh?
:)
I think it's Bobs turn to make a book or maybe his own action figure (like diresta)....wait an action figure that is a book! You three already do a podcast together!!! All of your creations are awesome! Thanks Bob, David, and Diresta!!! Inspirational
I was just going to say that.
This knifeblock looks beautyfull. I love the color of the wood once the oil was on. Really nice work.
Thank you!!
Looks great Bob!
Yay for Dave's book!
Hi bob, I think it was also important to mention that the depth of the holes should be longer than the knives themselves. This is so that when the knives are dropped in, the tip of the knives aren't damaged by the impact. Cheers!
i like the book holder. I hate laying a book down and spilling stuff all over it. lol
Great job Bob!
Came out great, the Tung oil really made it pop... nice work 🤓👍
That's a nice knife block, Bob! Thanks for sharing!
Cool project and good video. We have the same knives! They have served us well over the years. I like the addition of the shelf for a cookbook.
That turned out really nice! And way easier than I would first think it would be 👍🏼 nice job Bob 😊
I really like the addition of the shelf, and man does that basswood look great with the tung oil! I've always thought of it as a really bland wood, looks like I was wrong.
-Caleb Harris
Thanks Caleb! Same here, I was really surprised by how much it changed with some oil!
Love the multi-tasking concept!
Everything should have more than 1 function in my mind! :) Thanks!
Very nice video. The wood block isn't that wide but to be on the safe side you might want to put glue only in the middle of the shelf so that the wood is able to move.
Nice choice of books, Bob!
Thanks!
Nice project mate, beautiful finish with the tung oil too.
Hey Bob, a while ago on the Making It podcast (I think), you mentioned that you want your collection of videos to be the sort of thing where someone can think, "hey, I want to make this random thing, I think Bob made that thing a year ago, let's go check out that video!" For me, your videos are exactly that. Even if I don't want to make the exact project, it's awesome how you demonstrate so many techniques so genuinely and clearly. I just checked out this video today (after watching it randomly last year) because I want to make a wooden knife sheath and I remembered your technique for routing out the knife slots. Keep up the awesome eclectic projects!
Just yesterday I was looking at a knife block and wondering how they're made. I was right! Sweet video
It looks great! No drainage hole needed, knives should never be put away wet.
That was my thinking as well ;)
Sweet Tron shirt! Great video too.
Great job Bob !
Solid project Bob, love the wood choice. Cheers
Very nice Bob !
Thanks for making this! I've been thinking about making one out of same IPE that I make my lamps out of. Always was wondering about how to cut out the knife slots easily. Nice work!
The burning will dull your blades much much quicker. Whenever cutting, drilling, sawing, we want to keep the tools and work piece cold. It's why with metal we use cooling fluid. The burning is from the speed being too fast and moving to slow. You can change either one of those variable to help stop with the burning and dulling your bits if the they get too hot and deform
Looks great!! Been wanting a joiner and your bench top one looks pretty good... guess we'll just have to get another addition to our family of tools :) lol
Do it! That's a great size if you don't have a ton of use for it. I rarely use mine, but when I need it, it's very handy to have.
EvanAndKatelyn This would be my first project if I had a jointer and thickness planer.
Yeah I've been making do with just a thickness planer but I've knows a jointer was in my future lol
I've never thought about needing one, but after watching this I'm thinking that maybe I do
If you do get one, try and get the widest one you can find. I mostly do smaller projects no bigger than small tables but despite that I still find myself wanting one thats bigger than an 8 inch width half the time.
I love coming home from school on Thursdays to watch this channel
Looks like a cool first project. I'll try it out. Thanks
Looks like it would work great for a tablet too. Nicely done.
Great project! the ledge is useful for a tablet too.
That looks great and do love the effect Tung Oil has on wood, it's beautiful!
Pure Tung oil is considered food and toy safe. The oil is made from the seed of the tung tree nut. If you were to eat a significant quantity of the seeds, the chemicals in them would probably poison you but using the oil on your chopping boards is fine. Remember, Tung oil is a drying oil and therefore will polymerize. It is unlikley to be contaminating your food. Its pluses - Tung oil resists liquid better than just about any other oil, is highly resistant to mould and environmentally friendly.
I feel like it would tip backwards very easily with a little bump. I would add something on the back to stop that possibility. Love the ease of this
Did you think about putting a slight lip on the shelve to help keep an open cook book from closing?
Pretty cool project, awesome piece of wood!
I have a set of old wood handle knifes that need a block. This video will help. Thanks!
Great mother's day gift idea! Gotta go buy me some wood haha! Thanks, Bob!
Yes!! Great thinking!
this looks very nice, the grain is beautiful!
Awsome project and great video thanks for sharing
This is something I've been wanting to make for a while. Need to get out there and do it!
This turned out great. You could also add a small knife sharpener either on one of the sides or the back of the block as well!
I made mine by resawing a face off of a block, raising my table saw blade to slightly higher than my tallest blade, but shorter than the block of wood, and then then into (but not through) the wood to create the slots for my knives. My thickest knife required a couple of passes. Then I glued the face back on.
Now with a 4 inch piano hinge, add an acrylic shield that can be lifted up over the book and clipped at the top to hold it in place and open to the recipe.
You could also add an angled back block attachment on the backside that holds steak knives.
Really cool project, it's something I might be interested in doing in the future.
One thing I can see that could be improved, if I may, is to had a piece at a 90 degree angle in front of the shelf so the book stays open.
Nice job. Looks great.
Nice quick and dirty project. I probably would have routed the knife slots all the way to the bottom edge of the block, for drainage. For finish you could use block oil, or mineral spirits -- both food grade, non-toxic, and not derived from nuts. I would probably put oil in the slots as well, to keep the wood from swelling if someone puts a blade in wet.
Step 1 - get a 6x12x12 piece of lumber
Step 2 - buy a hydraulic press
Step 3 - knife holder
Step 4 - manage to pull knives from wood and proclaim yourself rightful king of England.
My new weekend plan
Brilliant had a lot of fun with this .
wonderful useful project. I hope we see more of these.
Really cool Bob!
This would be awesome to recreate with some sort of layer pattern with the wood. Try using multiple slats or something to give like criss cross affect bit like what you'd do with a chopping board
bailey swansson
Awesome idea!
very cool. new project for this weekend!
Great video! But isn't it a bit impractical to have it tilted backwards? I could imagine having problems with putting in and taking out knives.
I imagine he was thinking more about keeping the book open. You could easily modify the design to both I suppose.
I love this
even back here in Kenya i can easily make it thumbs up.good and simple
I will make one for my shelf
Just another quality build mate, I've always loved watching your Projects & it's inspiring me to take my woodworking further, thank you 👍
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
Very cool... questionable cookbook though... 😂 let's all build one and send to Eric for wedding gifts! He can have a knife block for every room/holiday/etc.!
This is a good idea. I haven't heard of anything like this one. Awesome job!
Thanks!
Fantastic work!
Thanks!
you could also ad a couple vertical dowels to the corners of the shelf so when your cook book is open they holds the pages open for you :-)
awesome project, bob!
Wow...Great project !
should have cut the upper end downwards, and make the slots not perpendicular to the block. think about the actual motion of pulling a knife out and also if you set it against a wall it will be awkward, that said great craftmanship.
That wood is amazing
Bob, could the type of block also be a cutting board. Have your knives and board all in one! Great video as usual
Dude that's outstanding
Nicely done man!
