I always look forward to your videos. You always seem to make everything with such deliberation and purpose. Hope you're keeping well during these weird times.
I gotta say, I love the artistic side of some of these videos. I watch them over and over again because they are so therapeutic and really calm my soul. Thank you for that.
So, I saw this video awhile back and I really like “different” and this was different than all other knife blocks. It inspired me to make one. I just finished it actually, I wish I could post pictures on RUclips. Mine is different, it is not as big and probably only holds up to about 6 knives but I left space in the middle for large wooden spoons and things like that. The story behind it is that I picked up an old pallet that had been sitting in my pastor’s front yard for over a year. Most of it was rotten and just needed to be thrown away, but I was able to save some pieces of it. That’s when I remembered your video. My pastor loves to cook so as a surprise I thought I’d make him this open knife block out of this old palate that was good for nothing but throwing away. The pieces I was able to save, after I sanded them cut them down and then covered them with epoxy….man! The grain popped and the different colors in the wood was just crazy. Really beautiful I sanded the epoxy down to a satin finish and used some walnut for the top slats where the knives go. I think it is one of my best projects to date. My idea for when I give it to my pastor is to tell him that every time he looks at it to remember that just because something looks like it’s not good for anything but to be thrown away, doesn’t mean it can’t be made into something useful. Just like God does with us. Just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration. 😎👍
Love it. One of the things I really hate about the 'standard' knife blocks is that you are really limited by the knives you can put in them (length & width of blade). This design completely solves this issue and is simple enough for folks to try at home although many will not be up to your very high standard.
I found myself saying it for him! His narration is so well done, just enough to fill you in on the process, but not so much that it overwhelms the experience.
@@mattbutts7519 I agree, I love when he narrates and let’s us know the ins and outs of the process! lately I’ve noticed a lot more ASMR type videos floating around but i find it hard to focus on them and then it becomes background noise for me and I lose out on the experience ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Great job as usual Will! Hope you and the fam are all doing well. Looking forward to being able to go to sawmill yard days and meetups again...someday. Excited to hear more about Thistle Collective - sounds very cool. Take care and stay safe.
Beautiful video, with a lovely result. Your editing is exceptional; just the right amount of details shown, with no fuss and no clutter, just sheer viewing pleasure. Superb.
Needs a vertical partition between the two knives on the same slot so you don't risk dinging a blade on the spine in front of it. But I love the simplicity of it and wood choices are perfect
Really great craftsmanship and video quality. Might be worth it to set in some magnets into the horizontal slots so the knives don't wobble at all... just a thought. Keep up the good work!
Beautiful work and great design. I too missed your narration but your usual outstanding lighting and camera shots told the story well. The noisy house comment to Ivy was interesting.I thought I’m the only one that faces that battle. It was good to see you back creating videos. My goal is to someday figure out an effective way to light my videos like you do. Perhaps that’s something you could add to your series of “Film School Friday” techniques that you used to make.
Very nice work! If I were to make that I would enclose the open sides about half way up with a different species of wood for contrast. That way I wouldn't have to worry about kids trying to stick their hands into those open spaces. Anyway, always enjoy your videos! 👍👍
Brillant! I enjoying watching this knife block come together and the lack of narration for me was refreshing. The videography and the music track was all I needed. Is your Thistle Collective production company up and running or where could one order the knife block?
Beautiful piece and video Will!! Love your work! Any particular reason why you didn’t have dust collection on your Deros while sanding the box? Just curious. :)
This is part of an 8" dado stack from Amana. But for these particular (1/4") dados essentially it was just two blades together. Just make sure to offset the teeth
Great camera work and I think the knife block is a real looker but sorry to say I personally believe lacks practicality because there is no divider to keep blades from dinging each other whilst being inserted or withdrawn from the knife block additionally I would think the height of the knife dividers would be prone to breaking as well as being a place for little bits of kitchen detritus and moisture to collect thus creating a potential place for the creeping crude to grow as well as be a home for corrosion and rust to attack your blades especially if you are like me and favor high carbon steel blades over knives with stain free steel blades. That all said I like the over all look just not how you came to that look.
It's been on my counter for some time now and I have to say I still love it. I keep my knives sharp and I haven't experienced any dinging. The air movement actually prevents "creeping crud" as opposed to conventional knife blocks that harbor moisture. I appreciate the feedback but I'm happy to say it's been an exquisitely functional knife block thus far.
Sorry but, your dado blade walnut insert is gorgeous. Is that wood species pronounced "Mon-Pell-Yay" "Wall-New"? Good stuff as always - thanks! I typically enjoy your narration, but am OK with your mixing it up. I've also gotten some bitches lately about not doing voiceover on some of my videos but I don't have your level of viewership - do what feels right to you. Oh, and sweet knife block design and nice knives!
Thank you! It's the little things right? Montpelier was the home of James Madison (4th president of the US) and this Walnut came from that property. It's been a bit too noisy for narration lately and I wanted to change up the format a little. You should make yourself a nice insert too!
I've been using it for more than a year now and never an issue. How are you currently handling your knives? Mine are all hand wash only so there is quite a bit of care involved so you don't cut yourself
@@wmwalkerco Mine is made out of beech, with routed slots for the knives, rather traditional really. I made it 25 years ago and the blades can only touch wood. Apart from an occasional woodworker, I do cook daily and consider it my #1 hobby. Knives are only washed by hand, and only by me 😀 Knives in a dishwasher would end-up blunt and nicked ;-) Because I am so careful about the blades, I would never put them in a block where blades can touch each other.
I am an avid home chef myself. It seems to work fine in my kitchen and I don't really enjoy sharpening so I try to keep my knives as sharp as possible for as long as possible. Cheers.
Your videos are nearly as much a masterpiece as your woodworking. Thank you.
I want a blanket made out of your videos for these dreary winter days.
It seems that no matter what you make there is a story...dialogue or not. Always a pleasure to watch a Will Walker video.
I don't need another knife block but strangely I now want one.
As always amazing videography... i missed the narration and a "this is is the story of that..."-moment
Thank you. I tried to mix up my format a little for this video. There will be more stories in the future :)
Love the idea of gluing then sanding the joints to fill in any voids.
a little old school trick I picked up along the way

Very relaxing video with a beautiful knife block being the result.

Glad you like them!
Beautiful. Wish we got to see more of you. By far my favorite wood working channel.
Great way to start my day with some soothing Will woodworking!!
Very nice :) and enjoyed the music too.
I think I’ll have to make myself one of these…
Do it!
Great to see a video from you again. I too miss your voice over. Hope to see and hear more in the near future. Hope you and your's are well.
Beautiful work brother, as always.
Excellent film. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing 👏 just awesome 👌 👏
we are delighted
Always appreciate your design style and filming choices!
Thank you very much!
A unique and visually interesting display. And the video has a calming zen-like feel to it. Thanks for sharing!

That’s tight
I miss you saying “this is a story about that” and the added information on your process, but it was a good video none the less
Just playing around with a new format to get some content out. The house has been a little too noisy to narrate lately.

Really beautiful work, man! 😃
Nicely done!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Enjoyed the video, missed the narration.
very cool idea for such a regular item! great work man! love your content!
Loved it, miss you dude. We need to go camp somewhere this spring.
Nice work!
Thanks!

That is a cool idea! I'm still honing the design of these, so I'll take that into consideration.

Good idea. I would also put dividers in the top row so the knives wouldn't hit each other.
Yep this was just a proof of concept. Knowing me I would do some sort of cool live edge along the top. Great idea!
Beautiful! Making these for sale?
Nice :)

I'm just realizing you're not too far from me, I'm just outside of Richmond.
Oh cool! Yep. I went to VCU Arts. Which side of Richmond are you on?
@@wmwalkerco, the midlothian area.
Beautiful piece and video Will!! Love your work!
Any particular reason why you didn’t have dust collection on your Deros while sanding the box? Just curious. :)
Good observation! I took the DC off so sawdust would fall into the chios and crevices to act as a gap filler with the wood glue.
@@wmwalkerco oh that’s really clever!!
Nice work, has given me an idea for a recent knife block request. Is the Dado blade an off the shelf thing or is it just two normal blades in tandem?

Can I please know what is the music that plays around 3:30?
Pull, by Oak and Cherry. I recommend Shazam for future situations like this - it can identify songs by a few seconds of listening (;
Yep. Nathaniel is correct. I get all my music through Artlist.io

Freaking nice work. From a retail view, here where I live that could easily fetch $70-80 at a weekend crafts fair.
That's about what I'm thinking too.
Porque no explicas que materiales usas👏
porque solo quería hacer un video relajante esta vez
The video goes black when switching to wide...anybody else?
hmmmm... Not sure why that is.
Ouch
just a word of precaution, keep ur hoodie string away from the machines. potential hazard.
Please don’t use straws to remove glue. They take for ever to degrade back in the environment. Nice video nevertheless
