Thank you for the past couple comments. I can tell just through this comment alone that you've got the passion and commitment. IMO that's what it's all about...most folks want to know where, not everyone is willing to put in the work. Peak Corbina season is typically May/June through August/September so it might be tough right now but def not out of the realm of possibility. Tight lines!
Try between Manhatten Beach/Hermosa Beach area, there are some nice Corbinas cruising along the surf there. Or San Onofre State Beach = Corbina heaven.
@@BenjieKimFishing definitely!! Your almost to 2k already I just hit 1k. Darn computer was down for almost a month so I couldn't run my software to edit videos. Back up now!! Got to meet up and fish!!
New subscriber here! Great vids bro! I like how you test ppl on what they see in the surf. It helps me look for what I need when I go out🤙🏽 keep it up!
another quality video Benjie. You are motivating me to try the surf again. I fished Malibu last week on the kayak, it was good. Ill send you some picks and vids keep it up.
this past summer was my first time ever targeting beans here in San Diego. I learned a lot and managed to hook up with 12 over several months. Mixed in was Spotfin, yellowfin, guitar fish, skates, batrays and the occasional Leopard Shark. Cant wait for next summer when the Corbies come back!
The fact that you share information sets you apart. I'm hitting Huntington Thursday. "Keep the sand out of your weapons, keep those actions clear, and I'll see you on the beach." (Capt. Miller to troops in landing craft, from, "Saving Private Ryan")
Thanks Brian! Good luck today, chased em once this week and missed a nice window where they were showing. Water is still a little cold and they're not as active as they could be, but there are some still roaming the skinny.
Dope video my dude. Always caught them beans as a bycatch. Makes me want to get back to the surf and try the things I’ve learned today. Also 18-19 beans is big to me 😂. Keep slaying!
Great video man! Definitely got to give this a try. I've been approaching this wrong 100% (11ft pole with 50lb braided chucking a 4 oz flat sinker as far as I can). That corbina at the end gave me chills, I gotta try to catch them light lining holy moly!
It’s the best way to do it imo! Long rodding will def get em but it’s pretty special to catch em where most folks are standing to make their cast. But either way, the only thing that matters is enjoying our time on the water and sharing that stoke, so thank you for the positive vibes! 🤙
Benjie Kim Fishing True that! One thing I try to teach friends who want to get into fishing is to focus on the scenery and enjoy the fresh air, some people get that wrong and give up after catching nothing. I am trying to expand my knowledge and skill in all forms of fishing, so this is definitely something I will try my best to master, maybe even starting tomorrow haha! C:
Haha awesome man! Ya know, it might be harder to catch a 6” than a 20” so you’re the real mvp 😜! Appreciate the comment and you watching the vid man, tight lines! 🤙
California Corbina look VERY similar to Whiting and I've received many comments confusing the two. But the official name is California Corbina (Menticirrhus undulatus) and is under the croaker family. They are unique to the California coastline from San Diego (probably Mexico as well) up through around the Santa Barbara area I believe.
I found you on Rodney's channel and discovered that you're like Rodney, informative and not overbearing. I like you keep up the vids and good luck. are you from OC?
Hey Benjie! Another banger! You have encouraged me to go out and go shore fishing. I went 2 days ago and caught a perch, still happy though! Question: how far are you casting?
Hi Kai, really depends on what/how I'm targeting. If I'm just trying to get anything that bites, I'll be casting nearby holes or troughs inside the outer sand bar...so anywhere from maybe 10 to 50 yards. If I'm sight fishing Corbina, I'm casting anywhere from 5 to 20 feet. Congrats on that perch man, big or small, what a gift it is to get out there on the sand and enjoy our SoCal nature!
Whats up man! I've fished PV a few times but mostly targeted Opaleye with peas, but that is definitely an area I'd love to explore further. Looks to be prime for calicos and more!
We don’t have whiting in southern California waters. tho whiting and corbina are very similar in appearance, they are 2 completely different species. This is 100% a california corbina (Menticirrhus undulatus).
They’re not fully in yet but should be soon. You should be able to find some at Newport (north of the pier, check by the finger jetties), next to the seal beach pier, and Huntington Beach (north and south of the pier). Never a guarantee but that’s where I’d check right now.
Hey Benji great video, where in So cal is this beach and could you do a void on seasons to fish in So Cal. I am quite a amateur at Shore fishing, love the content. Thanks
Hey thanks so much for watching and the positive vibes. That’s a good idea, I’ll have to put that on my to-do list! This beach was in the South Bay but they run pretty thick from sd all the way past Santa Barbara in the summer.
Thank you so much for your service Curt. Where do you live? I do fish with friends from time to time...I don't do classes but I'm glad to help in whatever small way I might be able to.
Thank you! There is no legal size for corbina. I catch and release all the ones I catch but if u keep, I recommend doing it in moderation as they are slow to grow. Tight lines! 🤙
What do you recommend for a rod for these lighter lines, weights, reels? I had a fuego lt 2500 paired with a light 10 ft sealine but it just snapped. I'm thinking 10 ft maybe overkill since I'm not chucking chunks for sharks and rays?
Light line surf fishing has a LOT of parallels to trout fishing. 10 ft is beyond my comfort zone personally but I do know some folks that use a 10 ft phenix trifecta lite and do quite well. For the past year I've used an 8 ft Phenix Trifecta Lite Light and I'm quite happy with it. A nice cheaper rod options could be the Okuma Celilo...budget priced but gets the job done. Also, more than focusing on how long the rod is, I would suggest making sure that you are not throwing beyond what the rod is rated for. For example, if the rod is rated for 1/4 oz to 1/2, it would be a risk to throw a 1 oz setup out there. For a light setup, a 2500 to 3k reel at the most would best match up to a rod rated for 1/4 to 3/4 with a ML action. Hope that makes sense, this is just my opinion only and I hope it is helpful.
@@BenjieKimFishing thanks! I had a 1/2 oz bullet sinker and I think on the backswing it some how hit the rod? Strangest thing and it's never happened before? I'll check those rods out. I fish Bolsa Chica and love seeing those corbina hanging out so close but they are definitely line shy.
Thanks for checking out my vids 🤙. Light line surf fishing is a niche thing in SoCal, yet it is quite popular with many surf anglers here. There are many anglers who have been targeting surf critters like this for much longer than me and are much better at it as well. Bill Varneys book Surf Fishing - The Light Line Revolution might be the most influential when it comes to this style of fishing.

You need to put Carbontex washers in your reels, especially the spinning ones. You will never go back once you do.
Agreed. All my reels have carbontex. 👍
That was epic bro! I need to get out on the water soon but it’s been cold in SoCal right now.
Thanks Ed! Yea, fishing can still be very good for halibut and perch but for these beans, July/august are the months to target!
