Late 80s early 90s my friends and I would go out on float tubes, 30 or 40 yards offshore, 20-30 ft deep, and fish for perch in Santa Barbara fairly often. We were poor so it was a great way to feed ourselves.
That 3 pounder was definitely worth the price of admission.

The first surf perch I ever caught was 3+ pounds. I thought at the time they all were that big. Haven’t caught one that big since ... lol

That big ole perch just needs scaled, gutted, 3 slices in the sides. Fry him up in olive oil, butter and fresh garlic and dill. Mmm I can taste it. That’s a bigen and a beauty.
Would love to see a day of surf perch fishing on artificial baits. We cant harvest sand crab up in wa state
Perch tend to have mushy meet, but definitely nice fish!!
The faster you get them in ice water the firmer you can keep the flesh

Do you have a favorite tide for perch? An hour before incoming high tide that occurs with the sunup/sun down times? Seems like that would be when the bottom would be the most stirred up.

Have you tried the small curly tail grubs, the soft plastic/silicone.
Hard to tell from a distance, but the sandpipers look like willets, which are in the sandpiper family.

My pb was 17 an half I believe I'll have to check but I've only got maybe 3 or 4 of that size my hole life the big ones are getting harder an harder to find for sure I'm 33 almost 34 been fishing since a kid so that being sed huge perch my man good catch thumbs up!

I grew up catching surf perch on muscles, which is my all time favorite surf bait. I have also caught them on nightcrawlers. I NEVER caught one over 2 ibs though, very nice!
Yeah muscles work really well. I just dont understand how dudes get them off the pier without getting in the water lol I'm not tryna be all cold and wet

Wow! What a slab! It's amazing how your camera deals with "dark light" conditions! It looked like you were fishing at mid-day. Good tips about importance of fishing for and catching bait at a different time/tide than for fishing for your catch. It's at least a 6 hour venture. The bonus of using sand crabs for bait you may be a likely to catch a striper as a perch. Nice video.
