It's interesting how this report carefully avoids saying directly that this time the attacked ship was an AFP navy ship. One can figure it out from the rest of the report, but it's clear that this news channel wanted to leave a doubt, so that viewers might assume it was a PCG vessel, which is considered civilian, not military. There's also no mention of the ramming reported by other channels and the AFP. The deliberately omitted details are precisely the requirements for invoking the MDT, as ramming is an ancient method of sinking an enemy ship. China has just fought a naval battle against the Philippines. If the MDT is not invoked now, it means that it is worthless.
The mutual defense treaty is definitely not what it is advertised as. It requires an act of Congress from the US side for it to participate. For that reason, it really may be worthless. On the other hand, on the Philippine side, it is very easy for the Philippine Congress to approve it. One just needs to send money to the politicians. So, this mutual defense treaty is more advantageous to one side than the other.

Six PN vessels were targeted by Chinese forces, including the RHIB manned by a NAVSOCOM team. The Chinese naval personnel boarded and punctured the NAVSOCOM RHIB using knives and in the ensuing confrontation the NAVSOCOM operator lost a finger, seven other members of the team were also wounded. The Chinese confiscated 8 weapons from the PN boat. Main PN vessel was surrounded by Chinese vessels on all sides, boarded and towed far from Ayungin Shoal.
