    Awesome. Thank you Patrick. The BTS stuff is the best :) The mix of your handdrawn visuals + bts pics from set is the perfect (most educating) combination for me. Cool they let you do this project + enhancing it with a regular breakdown. Someone in Blackmagic marketing team is doing the right thing :). Kudos to them too.

    Man I know this is probably ridiculed as a naive opinion, but I really like the lighting and the whole shot that is the closeup of the woman on couch in daytime. I understand that camera-side key light most often creates a flat image, but I feel like you knocked it out of the park with all the variations in light and shadow and color within that particular frame, it’s really very nice.

    Haha so true about the post sunset regret. So many times we’re packing down or packed down just as the light looks good.
    On one production I even managed to capture the model going into the sea after the shoot which ended up being one of the best shots in the commercial. Luckily still had a pocket 4k near me as it happened when everything else had been packed down.

    Talent usually has an army of minions with their phones out creating all sorts of content for them. You would probably have to take the same angle and find someone who you're paying to be there or apprenticing, filming the BTS for you and shadowing you, so you're not using client's time to do your BTS. You could occasionally interact if appropriate or just voice-over in post.

And I really hope there will be more of that in the future because there is a big difference between making educated guesses about how third party projects were shot and explaining the real decisions and challenges of a project you actually shot.

    Amazing job on this shoot and breakdown. You nearly made me order the camera after this, but I forgot no internal ND's. I think I'll catch them on the V2 of the Pyxis once they add internal ND'S ;) I've grown too accustomed and spoiled to the internal Nd's on my 12k's and 6k pro

    That shot near the end of the video with them sitting on the couch and over the shoulder onto the male talent. I would’ve had some kind of hair light on him. It needs something to separate his hair from the dark background, but like you said you only have so much time to deal with this stuff.

    You should do a series on responding to producers questions. I could foresee a producer (who cares) trying to critique as to why you didn't get the standard dirty OTS, from both man/woman perspectives. Like, how do you respond to that... is "no time" (to move gear for the reverse) the ultimate trump card?

    • @wanderingdp

      good idea. though i cant imagine a world where a producer would question a coverage choice. would be fun but i probably wouldn't get much work after that series

  • @Artfulscience1
    @Artfulscience1 2 месяца назад +1

    I’m curious to see how you’d like the ISO down at 100-200 for the low light shots to really dig deep into those shadows without noise. I started following that approach with my sigma fp (though I pre ordered the Pyxis) and it is BEAUTIFUL. One thing I noticed off the bar coming from the 6k pro to the sigma fp was how much cleaner the fp was in low light, it made the 6k pro look like mush. However, I learned to use low ISO’s in low light only once I got the fp
    Rob Ellis did a video on this exact topic using the 6k pro in low light with low iso and the difference was huuuuuge. I graded your sample clips, and they look great at 400, but I wonder how much better they’d look at 100-200 especially since you like to expose low

    • @wanderingdp
      @wanderingdp  2 месяца назад

      if your shoot looks better because you lowered ISO you are doing something wrong

    • @Artfulscience1
      @Artfulscience1 2 месяца назад

      @@wanderingdp they were just so much cleaner in the shadows.

    • @LucaOliviero
      @LucaOliviero 2 месяца назад

      The issue with going under the native ISO, is that you are also lowering the dynamic range of the camera, especially in the highlights. This means highlight roll off also takes a hit.
      Even in these dark situations you are still dealing with a lot of contrast between shadows and very bright areas, like key side or light sources. Unless you are filming with no lights at all…
      If your lighting and exposure is on point, you shouldn’t have noise issues. I would rather expose to the right slightly and then bring it down in post, and stay on the native ISOs.

    • @Artfulscience1
      @Artfulscience1 2 месяца назад

      @@LucaOliviero I see what you’re saying. I guess it also has to do with the quality of the cameras processing because I remember shooting a day exterior where part of the frame was in shade and any black clothes in the shade at iso 800 were pretty ugly with grain. Sigma fp. I can’t imagine the Alexa having that issue.
      Yes highlights take a hit in lower iso, I guess I’ll run tests with the new Pyxis. Maybe the fp isn’t the best camera to assume broad claims on the benefits of low iso

    • @guptageneralstores5243
      @guptageneralstores5243 2 месяца назад

      @@Artfulscience1 Maybe the base light levels are too low. Light the scene with a global light and bring the base levels up. And then build on that with a mix of more lights, closing the aperture or NDs. All cinema cameras, like film, are light hungry.

    Wouldn’t an FX three be a little more convenient using as a Director viewfinder just because of how compact it is and it’s full frame. I don’t know just a thought to say that the Black Magic isn’t a worthy camera but just if you’re talking about just something portable and small, can’t get much smaller as a cinema camera full frame FX three

    • @TorusPCarr
      @TorusPCarr 2 месяца назад +1

      they use a lot of anamorphic on the commercial world and the FX3 is not opengate

    • @iono_ritmo
      @iono_ritmo 2 месяца назад

      At this level I think convenience is interpreted differently than from a single operator’s perspective. If you’re already setting up everything else, I think the convenience between the Pyxis and the fx3 are pretty comparable. Aside from that, I imagine it comes down to taste. Side by side I usually prefer the Pyxis image.
