watching this as I'm refreshing my mind on changing my rear shocks I've had little giggle as I can relate to companies not checking there stuff had that with my driveshaft I always check stuff before leaving the store
I feel your pain Martin the amount of times I’ve been back and forth to the motor parts shops to the point I can’t be bothered to work on cars now to much hassle.Keep up the good vids and hope you and the family get better soon
Trouble is now there are many parts variants on the same model of cars, its crazy. Year's ago when you went to a small car parts shop, the guy would know every part number off by heart! Good old days eh!!
Even though it is 2 years later I am also in bed with a chest infection and I'm studying how to replace the rear shocks on my Mondeo. It is not the hatchback but I believe it is the same
Well done mate even though your under the weather, yet again great lighting around your working space video is fantastic and clear top job keep em coming 👌👍
I'm glad you tidied up that track rod, it was as good as good gets, a lot more people should take a leaf out of your book, I'm sick of all these mot inspectors failing things because they look dirty also because of peeling paint on springs and surface rust in between brake discs, it's so easy to sit a person in a mot waiting room and then 45 minutes later give them a list of total face value rubbish costing them 100,s of pounds, I think you know what I mean, I dont speak for myself because I do my own pre mot before I take it, but again sir great video look forward to more of your content, thanks 😉👍👍
I’ve had the same issues with ecp and gsf in Lincoln. I now use Allwoods automotive on Newark Rd in Lincoln (221 Newark Rd., Lincoln LN5 8NQ). Very knowledgeable guys, very reasonably priced and are very happy to check the parts before the sale.
Great video Martin, this is helping me loads, ive got to do this soon. P.S ST220 shocks have a flat on them to give space for the wider ST220 wheels. [If you use standard MK3 shocks without the flat, the wheel and trye nearly touch the strut, 1mm clearance, if a stone gets flicked up between that gap, bang goes your tyre, and you have a crash] DO NOT FIT STANDARD MK3 STRUTS ON THE REAR OF A ST220. PART SUPPLIERS READ THIS- DO NOT FIT STANDARD MK3 REAR STRUTS TO A ST220, ITS DANGERIOUS!!!! YOUR DATA BASE ON YOUR COMPUTER IS WRONG!!!! Garages, if you fit Standard MK3 struts Rear to a ST220, and the car crashes because you have fitted incorrect parts, the person dies in the crash, you go to court for killing someone! scary! Sorry Martin , this is a helpfull hint to anybody attempting this job:- (dont take this as me having a go at you, its not meant that way). Just noticed the bump stop was put on reversed,(it should stick out loads from the rubber gaitor. The ridge on the bump stop, fits into the first ridge in the gaitor) see the first part of the video with gaitor and bump stop and you will see what i mean, for those using this video. The bottom clamp, loads of penatrating oil days before the job, remove the 15mm bolt (sounds so easy, use a 6 sided socket) then get a round chisel and hammer it into the gap, this will open it up a fraction, ( means you can easily tap it off, and easily tap it onto the new strut), then remove the round chisel, Try to get a new bottom bolt if you can, failing that clean the bolt up with wire brush. Refit 15mm bolt. While the strut is out, clean the car body up with a wire brush near the top suspension mount, then treat with RUST STOP, then a bit of silver paint. (Will stop your ST from failing the MOT due to rust near a suspension point, in the future)
Just shows what abit of spray can do looks good gd luck with other side and hope you and family feel better soon I no how you feel me and my Sharron have it to
I love the way you did this job. Methodical and efficient. Ford dealers managed to round my lower pinch bolt off, whilst trying to replace top mount. I’m still waiting for them to sort it.
When I used to change Ford SA etc one tip is to get a good quality Allen key socket for the air gun and hold the SA nut and spin the centre of the SA with the air gun - found it faster and a lot easier 👍
Ive had a few of these st220's, usually bought as salvage....The pattern part shocks are wrong, they should have a flat on the shock under the spring mount, this is so the rear tyres don't rub on the shock...I made this mistake, you will see that the gap is a matter of only a mm or two between the tyre and shocks now...i found that tyres rubbed, especially if you had the smallest of buckles in in wheel....needed genuine shocks..., the st220 has different front and rear suspension to all the other models, front also has different lower wishbones, to give it a wider track and a steering rack with a different ratio giving more direct turn
hi any idea where I can get the proper rear shocks. i discovered that the rear shocks are different (drop link mounting lower) to all other models but cannot find any anywhere. had 6 pairs delivered so far from people that said thery were correct but mone was.
Another great job Martin 😊,just a thought, when the mondeo goes for its MOT while it's up on the ramp you could ask if you could get the underneath sprayed with Waxoil seen as the winter is on our doorsteps 👍
Just had my Corsa d in at Vauxhall for a new subframe for free on a 58 plate and now it's had to go back to be tracked up and it all so has to go back to see why the exhaust sensor not working which they unplugged to get subframe out and now am getting a knocking don't think something not been tightened up but keep up the excellent vids hope you both get better soon.
I recently started using auto doc as they have all the car parts I can't get elsewhere.. Had 2 orders so far and it 7 days I waited once it showed up as posted. Got Sachs top mounts for my vxr and a turbo gasket mounting kit for my vivaro van.
Hi mate I used to use Auto Doc before we left the EU but since we left there has been talk about when purchasing items from the EU you would have to pay Import Duty is that the case or is postage still only cheap?
That lower bolt came off nice ! I can't believe the run around you experienced customer service is awful these days brutal ! Hope you are all feeling better soon 🙏
Get yourself to toolstation. Under a fiver for 3 socket adapters from Draper. Comes with a 3/8 to 1/4, a 1/2 to 3/8 and a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter. Saves buying a bunch of new sockets. I’ve had Halfords equivalent for years and only broken one.
I would be Raging Martin. Luckily for Vauxhall I've found the official parts directory so I can order the correct part numbers. I'm sure there will be one for Ford online too.
Them droplinks will be the wrong ones because you have lowering springs on the car, you would still be able to use the longer ones as long as you use them on both sides
Short link is sport suspension and long is regular suspension. Pretty common for manufactures to do this especially Ford and Mazda. Better off to measure your own and research online for what you need and phone parts store with part#. That's what I started doing to avoid multiple trips and wrong parts. Parts store can only tell you what they see in their parts program and can't memorize all parts for all cars. Good job with the repair👍
One side affect of lowering a car is the need to shorten the drop links. Reputable lowering kits include them in the box. If the other link is perished, there's a pair of adjustable drop links for your ST220 on ebay UK for the Ford price if you're interested....
My 220 is lowered 50mm all round and still has the factory drop links on all round. Branded lowering kit comes with 4 springs in the box, nothing else. As the bottom mount is attatched to the anti roll bar on the front and rears, you do not need to change the drop links.
Well done Martin I would have insisted they deliver the parts as they sold you the wrong parts as a good Will gesture in future I would make a point of checking the new replacement parts before leaving the shop in case they try and give you a second hand parts Hopefully you and the family are feeling better soon
Euro wrong parts are exactly the same sending out dirty used parts, car part suppliers are all the same it’s all about sale figures for the month. Nice video Martin very lucky the 15mm holding the strut to the hub didn’t snap the head of the bolt off . Shocks to be replaced get a pair of mole grips on the shocks shaft and buzz the nut off.🚙👍🇬🇧
They aren't proper storemen nowadays Martin, that's what i did when i left school in 1977 at the Ford main dealer. They should check the part before the customer leaves eg check if it is a new part. Returns should be checked also to see if they are a new part.
Top job Martin. I do enjoy the St220 videos, for obvious reasons. Next job on mine is to replace both fnt exhaust flexis. I picked up a pair very cheap, that also happen to come with de cats. So they are going on too. I already have both back boxes deleted and a re map. So hopefully ditching the cats will unleash a few more horses and a bit more grunt. I will just be taking it to a friendly mot tester in future, to get it through the emissions test.👍
like the video martin and i hope you and your lovely start feeling better soon i had that still got it i find it hard to sleep at night as i suffer with astma which is,nt good when you have a chest infection .
This is why I only like genuine parts as you know it’s 100% the correct part and is the best quality but you pay for it, always have issues with non genuine parts suppliers
I've changed both of mine drop links on my mondeo st tdci it looks like they are going for front ones as rears are shorter I get my parts now from ebay which use ford parts only the fronts if they are ford ones are plastic I feel your pain I am currently resting today due to same sickness I have also made covid test and are clear take care martin great video
Oh Lord Martin, i am so sorry you had so many problems, sounds like the same problems we have, but we are a third world country, yours is a first world, as you say, unbelievable…..hope you all feel better soon. Bless you
Great job Martin but I think you should have torqued up the suspension bolts once the hub had the weight of the car on it not when it was up in the air.
Great job again Martin, hope you're feeling much better now - Just go back on your video and check, but I am convinced someone has put the metal dust shields behind the discs on the wrong sides when they have changed the hub bearings as they normally wrap around the disc..? Probably doesn't matter but just caught my eye … Let me know if you agree.!!
No mate, i get what you are saying. But they are on the right way round. That's how they are fitted on the Mondeo. My St220 is the same as in Martins video.
Are you feeling better Martin? It is so hard working on cars when under the weather. If you look at 31:19 ish, are you sure the brake hose has not twisted? Looks like the calliper maybe 360 degrees out if that makes sense?
Sorry your feeling 😞. Another interesting vid though Martin some of these factors are too busy just reading a computer screen instead of having the knowledge to do the job properly. Keep smiling mate God luvs ya! 👍
Last mot did mention that front near side coil spring broke needs looking at took it garage it was the coil spring has broke it was a less then a 10mm bit what broke off cost me 80quid with the brand new spring
Thinking of doing this. As I replaced both rear hub/ bearing in the past will it be easier to remove them on car first. The strut would be far lighter to handle etc ?
Hi Martin, I had the same illness last week for 6 days also, hope you feel better soon mate.I don't know about you ,but I think NOBODY has any pride in their job anymore, and totally don't give a monkeys if they have made a mistake or not with a total disregard to customer care! Why can't anyone get things right anymore?
Being it's been lowered it will have shorter drop links you can get them off eBay standard ride height it has the same drop links as all other petrol MK4 Mondeo so they are longer I had the same problem on the one I had which was lowered it wasn't till I spoke to my friend who I bought it off that I learnt it different hope that helps
Makes no difference that it's been lowered mate. Putting shorter springs on, doesn't alter the distance between the 2 mounting points for the drop link as the bottom fixes to the anti roll bar, which moves up and down in any case. So the drop link is standard St220 one regardless.
what a palaver about the drop links. cold has been circulating my house too. we've all had it, I was the last to get it. Caught it Saturday, feel fine today, but now my wife is unwell again. vicious cycle this cold flu malarky

When you disconnect all the arms like that to get the whole strut out, does the rear geometry need redoing when it’s all reconnected Martin?
No Mark, only when you remove the rear subframe.
