Anyone who lived in a Superbowl, Olympics, NBA All-Star Weekend, etc all know one thing. The city will clear up enough for the event and tourists in record breaking time.

The worst part is I use to work at skid row, what they are showing is nothing compared to what it really is.

So sickening, and it has nothing to do with mental illness. And all to do with drugs and alcohol.
I use to talk to alot of the people that lived in the skid row housing because I had to patrol the buildings, I say a good 90% of the individuals I came in contact with were some of the nicest stable minded people I've met that just got dealt a bad hand in life or made a few mistakes along the way it truly bothers me how we have the highest cost of living and pay so many taxes but it does absolutely nothing to our people down there.
How many of them are from out of state?

@@HBC423 that's not what happened there. The tech boom basically displaced a whole bunch of people who couldn't afford to live there once people were clamoring to move there to be a part of it. But not they're leaving and causing similar situations in other parts of the country.
Please don't send them to San Bernardino, Riverside or Orange county we have our own problem. Don't relocate these people just to hide a problem that you failed to solve.

Affordable housing is an issue across America. Homeless people also migrate to California because the climate is more manageable than living on the east coast or in the south.

I’m from Maryland. D.C. isn’t much better than Los Angeles. There’s a huge income disparity in the D.C. metropolitan area. Gentrification in D.C. is a real problem.
I’m from Houston, Texas who visited LA last year I had always known they had a homeless problem but Jesus Christ I didn’t think it was that bad…as soon leaving the airport into the city homelessness was first the thing I noticed.

I had a friend who was homeless by choice (so he claimed) He slept in his car and kept a storage with his things. He worked by day and paid for a room for 1 hour to shower every night. this was back in the 90's. He also said, he could not survive the way he does in any other country or even city. The climate and the wealth in this town supports my life style. California just has all the elements a person who wants and chooses the freedom to live this way, can!

Lived in LA around 2016 -2017 there were homeless camps and every now and then you’d see some tents along the freeway. Went to visit last month and it’s blown up, tents EVERYWHERE, it’s sad that LA hasn’t really done anything about it.
I live in SoCal about an hour away from LA, and avoid going to LA as much as possible just for this reason.
If there's one thing big events like these NEVER do, it's fix societal issues.

i visited LA for the first time last year. i did NOT realize homelessness was that extreme.
I visited 2 years ago and was saddened by the amount of homelessness in LA. But they’re still grateful. It’s my mission to come back and give back to my team city! Issa Rae can’t do it alone it takes everybody to shed light and bring joy to those who need it most.
I visit LA. 18 years ago nothing but homeless people it was sad.

I just moved to LA about 4 months and driving through certain area in downtown is so bad full of homelessness people. Feel bad for them but again the government should do something about it . I seen lots of business closing down because people are scared to shop because homeless would camp out in front and around they’re businesses. Los Angeles should get really clean out.

Or more like, the news is commonly known that California is the most lenient on what they can get away with, has the best weather to be outside year round, those kinds of things. California definitely has attractive weather if you find yourself living outside of a home year round. But assuming those people would prefer living in a house rather than outdoors (a safe assumption), the financial blocker of sleeping under a roof is very high in the state of California. Average 1 bed room apartment is over $2,500/ month easily in California. Compare that to many parts of the Midwest where that same roof could be rented for well under $1,000/month.
We simply cannot ignore the elephant in the room that California is one of the most unaffordable places to live in America. And safe to say that if you're homeless, you probably don't have a lot of money. Therefore it is clear that the high cost of living of California is a contributing factor to people "choosing" to live homelessly outdoors rather than in a house.
Homelessness has always been a problem in LA, but since the pandemic it went up 10x more.
Before the pandemic most tents was in Skid Row with a few here and there under freeway bridges, etc...Now the tents are all over town until you can't walk down the sidewalk

When I was living in LA, as a cane user, homeless people would guide me thru the sidewalks, tell others to clear the walk for me. It was not an unfriendly experience for me just a smelly one. You will find that not all are hyped on drugs. Or crashing from mental delusions.

It was bad before the pandemic. The pandemic is actually helping hide the problem, as 1,000's of homeless people living in hotels. That program is ending and those homeless will be back on the streets.
Sky high rents means increasing homeless. Unless the shelter costs are made more affordable, problem will only get worse.
People refuse to build higher apartments. And those who are willing to build higher are the relatively new land owners who don’t monopolize every apartment in town are put through extreme hurdles for a building permit.

There is a major mental health crisis in California that is being completely ignored by politicians. I moved away from the golden state. El Paso Texas has an amazing culture of friendliness and welcoming people.

I swear, if they would just pass a law that would cap rent, pending on size, condition, and location, that homeless number would drop. It would probably stop a whole lot of rich people, buying up all these properties, only to rent them air b&b or turning houses into apartment buildings and tripling the rent, I also truly believe that if you purchase a house, you HAVE to live in it for a number of years before renting it out. I live in small town Illinois and have a 3 bedroom house with full basement, garage, and yard and we pay $600.00 a month, so it really baffles me when I hear that a small one room apartment for upwards of a thousand a month, they shouldn't be allowed to charge that, but then again, big pharma shouldn't be able to charge $40,000.00 for a life saving pill, when it costs $40.00 to make

Out in Alhambra we had a man in terrible condition tripping out on meth the other day at the park yelling profanity and threats at patrons and making gun gestures and sounds at children playing on the play ground. Called the police. They “talked” to him for maybe 2 minutes and left. The man continued harassing the park goers. Gotta love LA/California!

They cleaned up the city so good this weekend. It’s obvious they can do this on the regular but they won’t.
We visited in September. I told my family that people in CA must really like camping. Me and my husband knew the truth, but maybe my 9yo didn’t understand. One of our über drivers told us about all the vacant office buildings that sit empty due to the pandemic. I asked why they couldn’t be rezoned for residential. $500-1000/mo is reasonable low income housing IMO. That’s the real problem. People who work for a living, and still can’t afford to live anywhere. It’s easy for tourists to see the problem, and think about what all the do have in comparison. But honestly, much of the time I was thinking that if I had to live there, I might’ve been in that same situation. Housing is just too expensive. We own a 4645sqft home that we purchased for $620k. In LA, we’d be lucky to get a 1000sqft for a million dollars.
It can't be zoned for higher density units because the local residents don't want it in their neighborhood as it will affect their own property values. The residents simply vote against the measure and it never passes. The system is broken because it is driven by greed.
@@jlee4768 sounds like the exact same thing that has happened in my own town for decades. People spend X amount of money and either 1) don’t want anyone else paying a dime less than they paid and/or 2) don’t want anyone else moving there even though it was totally fine that they did. Of course, we don’t have a homeless problem here (yet). This makes housing expensive and difficult to come by despite there actually being plenty of land to build. No one wants anything built smaller than their own homes, so apartments are out, and townhomes are hated (though cost almost as much as a regular suburban house!). But the behavior comes with its own punishments. We don’t have a state income tax. Instead we have to pay property tax. That means that it doesn’t matter if you paid $600k for your home 5 years ago if comparables have sold recently for over a million. You are going to be taxed that much. Eventually locals won’t be able to afford to keep their own home and where will they go? Parking lot? Theres no affordable housing to fall back on since everyone was so against having it.
I would assume that my solution of rezoning vacant buildings would be better than a hobo village in their front yard. I mean, visiting it was pretty embarrassing to see. At least with them all staying in an affordable skyscraper there would be less tents/trash/urine/feces. They would still need income to afford the $500 rent, so it’s not entirely giving a bunch of “lazy drug addicts” a handout. But I understand. People here were against subsidized housing for the elderly, which was to be built on land that used to be a trailer park. The trainer park existed before any of these people against it had their own house built.
I was born & raised in LA & as for the homelessness I never knew how much & how bad it even was until years ago. There needs to be a change because it's right not because of the Superbowl

When the Super Bowl was in Atlanta they tried to clean up the city for it. Our Homeless problem is nowhere near LA’s of course but still its a sad reality that it took the Super Bowl to come here for them to even bother doing that. I feel like LA is doing the same thing
A block away from my work Homeless people stay. There have been protests by the local College, and a few other city council meetings where people blasted the Mayor for the problem. But it's not her fault that many who have the choice to go to the homeless area in town designated for them refuse to live by the rules and want to remain homeless. All those College students that were protesting for their College grade are gone now. They never left their names in the meeting after the Mayor asked them to try and help with the problem. Those College students are long gone now two years later. They aren't helping but they protested for their College credit.

LA homeless problem is known worldwide. 3rd world countries are in disbelief 🤣. My girlfriend's family in the Philippines knows CA is a homeless haven and they think we're lying to them until we send photos of our local freeway ramps.

Homelessness on Hollywood and Vine has been a problem for decades. Tourists have seen it for decades. it’s nothing new. LA has never been pretty, just pretty in movies.
More than 80 percent of the homeless people in LA are not native Angelinos, they're from other states. As a native, it really irritates me. 😤
One factor that is often overlooked is the millionaire investors buying up all the affordable rentals and turning them into AirBnB for tourists. Plus all the new apartment buildings being built are generally out of the price range for average working folks. There's just not many options left.

It's investment gentrification. But on the other hand, I know plenty family's in LA whose kids squandered away their families prior hard work and home. Some lost their family mortgage free home because they didn't pay the taxes. Others cause the kids got on the narcotic, jail, or just plain ignorance.
that's what bitter people (who can't afford a house in CA say). 90% of these are people have substance abuse issues. most came from OTHER STATES. you don't live on the streets because you can't afford to buy or rent. you simply move to an affordable state. Los Angeles officials typically clear out the homeless to "Pretty-Up" the town before a major tourist event, and "Relocate" them to a less conspicuous part of town temporarily. They have been doing this for decades now going back to the 84' Olympics. Our nation's smug politicians smile and wave for the cameras while doing absolutely nothing to help the homeless, who must live in public parks and skid-rows which have been turned into "Homeless Encampments". We have an entire country's worth of people sleeping in the cold hard streets now, so welcome tourist to this so-called "American-Dream" that our out-dated govt from 1776 has made into a reality. WELCOME TO OUR NIGHTMARE!! it's time for a change...
We need to realize that each and every one of us are one paycheck away from losing our jobs and being homeless or living in poverty! I don't know what it is like to be homeless but I do know what it is like to have to make that heart wrenching decision of do I pay rent or do I put food on my table this month
Homelessness is a severe problem but saying everybody is one paycheck away from poverty is really stretching it , there are plenty of regular people living normal happy lives that could survive multiple years of no income.

I have family that live in inglewood just 5 years ago I remember visiting often and you wouldn't see any homeless around. You might have spotted maybe a handful here and there. But they would never leave a mess. As soon as they started building the stadium it seemed like a billion homeless people flocked out there. It was so weird seeing all those homeless and the amount of trash was insane. LA always had a bunch of homeless but inglewood didn't. The homelessness in inglewood is recent. And it all started with that stadium they built.

I’m born and raised in Inglewood. It use to be a fairly affordable area to live in as well, due to it not really being a favorable place to live in. 10 years ago you could barely get a job in the city and there were gang issues. The stadium made prices for places skyrocket, and around the stadium isn’t as dangerous since they are improving they area. It’s changing the demographics of the community slightly. Homeless people feel a bit safer staying there now.
@blessed from what you described, it sounds like LA is transplanting it's homeless people. NYC does the same thing. they have these "programs" that disperse their homeless population to different parts of NJ and PA in an attempt to alleviate. crazy
Well I worked next to an encampment for many years, watched many die over a decade or so and yes there may be many who have a hard luck story and need help to get back on their feet. I bought bus tickets for a few to get back home, but what I seen for the most part was drugs, alcohol and prostitution. You can't recover from what ever ails you if you cloud your mind with drugs and booze while turning to crime and prostitution. It's a catch 22 and many will say what's happened to them is a result of their circumstance, I can't argue with that point but here are programs available for those who seek it. Most can't cope with these programs because booze and drugs are strictly prohibited and many can't last without their stimulants to get the help they need.
I lived with an addict and the one thing he was adamantly against was taking any responsibility or having any kind of structure to his life. Any time it was even hinted at he immediately rebelled. You cannot help someone who refuses to help themselves. You cannot do it for them.

Most homeless choose to live on the street rather than abide by rules. I found this out the hard way by trying to help someone who was homeless. I have a large property with lots of fruit trees, so I thought maybe I could at least help one or two people by letting them set up their tents on my property. I only had one rule, they could not use drugs or alcohol on my property. Less than 24 hours after allowing a homeless man to come here I found out I had made a big mistake. I looked outside and saw the police in my driveway. I went out to see what the problem was and the homeless man was standing in the street naked!. My neighbor across the street witnessed this and called the police. The police told me most of these homeless people are either drug addicts or mentally ill. Many of them even have families who have given up trying to help them :( IMO We need more facilities to treat the mentally ill and drug addicts who WANT the help. If they DON"T want the kind of help they REALLY need, then I can't feel sorry for them if they go to jail for indecent exposure. The public sidewalk is not an acceptable place to camp!
I Totally Concur. The County has to start making some changes. such as, The Homeless individual showing proof of being Registered in a legitimate Homeless program or else they must Vacate The County and or Pay A Fine. Every month The Homeless receive Money & Food stamps from The County, Cut them off until Proof of being Registered in A Legitimate Homeless program can be shown.
What this man wrote is 110% true. Don't let any politician, advocates, experts or news stations tell you otherwise. Also, mental health and treatments don't work unless the patient sticks to the plan. If there's no one to monitor them and make sure they take their medicine, they'll relapse just as fast as any drug addict. Unfortunately, many homeless are guilty of both, drug addict and mentally ill.

LA does provide numerous of social programs to help those who need it. Unfortunately, the homeless don't want the help and yes many have mental problems. Its sad that this homeless issue is spreading all over LA and other cities as well

Throwing money at the problem doesn't fix it. A lot of these people can't be helped and should be in a mental institution which they closed down.

Republicans ran it from 1983- 1999 /2003-2011 and it was bad then too -- its the economics of CA that have pushed people to the streets and mental facilities closed by Ronald Reagan (R)

The UK has it share of homelessness and is a very expensive place to live also, but the scenery of homeless people on the street is not to this extreme.
I live in a town of 90 K, if drug afflicted are loitering, they are removed for trespassing!! Second, the US needs to call them what they are, drug addicts, not homeless, that is the symptom of drug addiction. Ppl are really going to be disappointed if not disgusted!!

Anchorman says on main street because they have nowhere else to go...there are homeless shelters, the missions and FREE rehab locations literally all over L.A. there is a rehab right on the Venice Beach boardwalk. Problem is all these places have RULES that homeless dont want to adhere to.
I mean let’s be real, the only way to effectively solve the problem at this point would be to euthanize about 90% of them (most are already useless, vile scumbags anyway). But since that seems very harsh and cruel it’ll never happen. LA is hopeless now so I’d suggest for anyone living there to just abandon it.
This has little to do with housing. This is mostly a drug addiction and mental illness issue. And if they are offered housing and refuse it, there is nothing anyone can do. Currently they can stay where ever they want. Most choose to stay on the streets.

Sure, some people have lost their homes, but not most of the people, they are meth/heroin and fentanyl addicts. LA is insanely expensive now-most people who cant afford to live here dont end up doing drugs, setting fires, attacking people or living in dilapidated campers hoarding mounds of garbage. That is what's ruined LA county and most liberal cities.

I'm from LA and I now live in Vegas... this is a country wide problem. There are so many homeless people living in the sewers here in Vegas it's ridiculous and the superbowl will be here in 2024. This homeless problem is nation wide

Reading comments good and bad.. the facts are that 50% of homeless are on disability or SS retired and there is not affordable housing for them and or for the others that work full time and live in their cars if have or tents. It's not drugs to blame, it is greed and low low low wages with highest paid at the top whom not doing the work! SS and Disabled are given 25% of living wage to barely survive and then there you have a homeless crisis. And if you were in their shoes you just may want to escape also as a 40 oz of beer is easier to attain than thousands of dollars to even get a little shack. And if no credit you cannot even think of getting home !!!
Everything took a thing for the worse after Prop 47 passed (November 2014). Think back to how homelessness was before then, not to mention crime. It was nowhere on this level. Prop 47 had good intentions behind it, but it has been a miserable failure and needs to be repealed.
This is all over California, they voted No on the recall. Land of the fruits and nuts.

There is a vacant military base in CA named Alameda Naval Air Station in Alameda, CA - The politicians can use this vacant compound to assist the homeless with temporary housing , mental illness, drug addiction, jog training assistance. Time to provide solutions.
People who fail don't simply stop existing. They go on surviving. 90% of the homeless are either addicts, disabled, or both, because being homeless does that.
Or the flipside of that. I work with mentally ill, drug addicted,frequently homeless people in a mental health clinic.Many have had families and jobs, but have burned bridges by staying addicted. Many families have done everything they could for a chronically mentally ill family member, but no hospitals exist anymore to keep chronically mentally ill folks safe,housed,medicated, etc.

And for the criminals who also victimize the houseless and the rest of the community, laws to have them be accountable. It could easily be done

What people from other countries don’t understand that a lot of homeless want to be on the streets! I know…I’ve done triage work trying to place them in housing and most of them turned down the help.
