      I had a business meeting in San Francisco 9 years ago. Our client took us to an expensive seafood restaurant around Fisherman's Wharf. Homeless, elderly Chinese lady comes in, reeking of urine, trying to get in the kitchen area. Apparently, the restaurant gives her their recyclable cans. They kindly helped her out of the restaurant, but the entire dining area then reeked of her smell. She attempted coming in several more times while we were there, and was obviously mental. I felt embarrassed for our hosts. Meal for 4 people costing ~$1200 and a dining experience that reeked of urine.

      @@martybarbeau you will have the same problem. I think you're missing the greater point. The courts have ruled that poverty is not a crime. The city cannot evict people from public places like the streets. Before Ronald Reagan was president I never saw homeless people. After he was elected with his trickle down theory economics giving more tax breaks to the rich so they can pass down to the poor ( a pipe dream) that's when people start losing their homes and homelessness became common.
      It will only get worse with the current president who gave big tax cuts to people who don't need them. And now that they decide to cut the $600 bonus with the unemployment check there will be a rash of evictions and increase in homelessness in the run up to the November election. Most likely homeless people will be in no mood to go vote.

    • @samthepoet107
      @samthepoet107 4 года назад +6

      @B Donor that''s nonsense. I used to work in a hotel in Manhattan when Reagan was president. Some of the guests who came to our hotel from other states were shocked to see a homeless woman with all her things sleeping on the street. Homelessness got nothing to do with using too much drugs. People were using drugs in the 1960s during Woodstock. Also during the time of Reagan money was cut for mental health and that helped flood the cities with homeless wanderers. People now had to fend for themselves instead of having a place they could be tended too and medicated. Reagan's tax cuts deprived the states of those monies for mental health. Even now most of the homeless people I see on trains got mental problems. So it's a combination. I just saw one man two days ago who was bare back saying he is homeless and needs a place to cook. The truth is NYC has homeless shelters. Some homeless people are even put up in hotels. But there are rules they have to follow. And not everyone will put up with rules. And if I were to tell him go to a homeless shelter he might stab me with a knife so I pretend that he cannot be helped.

      Oakland/Berkley was really bad before Covid. SF has always been bad. Lived in LA and San Diego and back then LA downtown was horrible but it's spread all over since then. San Diego got bad once Horton Plaza changed. California housing could fall 70-90% if things keep heading this way. I won't vote DEM at all in 2020 but here in Cali sometimes it's DEM vs DEM and then I vote out incumbent because obviously they have no clue and don't deserve a job again.

      @John S I lived there in 2000-02 during the Raiders Super Bowl loss to their coach. The Gaslamp had a yearly block party, Pacific Beach had a yearly block party. Mission Beach allowed drinks just not in bottles on the beach to consume. This was all possible because people took care of the trash and each other. All of that has changed. The Gaslamp is starting to revert to what it was before Horton Plaza was built. Before it was where people strolled to find hookers and drugs of less quality than blow. San Diego is still fun and I go 1-2 times a year but it's on a downward spiral. Haven't been since Covid but doubt that made it better. You re new and see things for the first time and that's great. It is NOT what it was and I've experienced it for decades.

    @Martin Barbeau, I was in downtown Cleveland, OH on 7/30/20 while standing I saw a man with matted hair and dirty clothes, homeless, walk to the city garbage can and pull out a bag open it and used the fork in the bag to eat a few french fries leftover. I looked around saw people looking at him but no one bothered to do anything. A young white male on a walker gave him $10 to get him something to eat. I gave the young guy a thumbs up and as the man passed I too gave him the few dollars I had left in my purse.
    When he walked away he stopped looked back to say something, I gave him a thumbs up and dropped my head in my hand and openly cried and sobbed out loud. The young white male asked some by standers what was wrong with me they said she just started crying after she gave him some money. I could not stop for a while everytime I tried I would start crying again, it hurt so bad to see his mental condition. It reminded me of our conversation just earlier that day. All people homeless are not addicts people, some are just plain old hungry. Thank you to everyone who has a heart enough to feed someone and to excuse their color. 😥😥😢

Meanwhile those of us working full time and paying taxes don’t get offered free housing and medical care. Some homeless, but not like downtown. We were there to visit famous old Hollywood places (Musso and Franks restaurant and famous cemeteries) We had a good time doing that. I think most people don't do their research before going to LA - downtown is not where you want to be - they assume all of LA is puppies and rainbows? Venice Beach was bad, but if you head down to Santa Monica Pier it's pretty fun. If you're going to LA, you have to spend the money and stay in a better area, or else vacation elsewhere if you don't want to spend much.
