I had learned about t-tests in undergrad, but that was so long ago that I've practically forgotten. This was a much needed refresher. The examples were easy to follow and straightforward. I appreciate that Dr. Grande offers the analyses demos in both SPSS and Excel.
I appreciate Dr. Grande's explanation of what these types of tests are applicable in analyzing. I did not know how to determine whether variances are or are not assumed prior to this so thank you!
I did use SPSS in my undergrad but I thought that this video did a really nice job of explaining it again to reiterate it to me. This stuff can be a bit difficult for me sometimes, so it is nice to be able to see this video and go over the information with no pressure of trying to do the work in class right away, as it was in undergrad. By watching this video, I feel more comfortable and confident with this information.
I like that you explained when to use the different t-tests and how to calculate them. I have not used SPSS before but it seems simple enough to follow if given the opportunity.
While this was not exactly what I was looking for for my final research proposal, this video helped me understand the difference between one-sample and independent samples.
I found this video easier to understand than some other videos. I feel more confident about T-tests and SPSS because of this video. I also think watching the videos in order helped my understanding too. I watched T-test in Excel before this video and I googled related information that helped me understand this video.
I like the real data as well. It helps with understanding how to process the tests and what information they provide, even though it's providing what we are asking for.
one sample, and independent sample t tests are interesting. It was helpful to see it in SPSS, it looked pretty straight forward even compared to excel.
I was happy to find this video as I am trying to decide what type of research design to use for my research project, I think this one might work for me.
I liked how this video showed how to format T-Tests in SPSS because, again, I'm not too familiar with SPSS and have never used it but it seemed sort of easy to pick up.
This seemed pretty straight forward and I did not feel lost as Dr. Grande explained. You put the information in and it is set up and formatted in a way that is easy to follow.
This was a great example of one-sample and independent samples T-test. It is fairly straight forward and I can see how simple it is to plug in the information in the analysis tool. The charted information is very easy to read and the output is a common format.
I had previously heard of t-tests and learned about them in class, but was unaware of the differing types of t-tests that could be used. This video was extremely helpful in learning when to utilize each form of a t-test. In addition, it was interesting to learn that one-sample t-tests will not calculate differences between groups but rather for the difference between a dependent variable and specified mean. In contrast, an independent-samples t-test can distinguish a difference between groups. These concepts were completely unfamiliar prior to this video.
Jacklin Skibicki I was also grateful that he specified which different T-tests you would use in varying scenarios, whether you were comparing two different groups via an independent-samples T-test or a one-sample T-test for difference of dependent variable and mean like you mentioned.
Very good! I liked how you explained one-sample and independent samples. One-sample compares one's groups average to another value. While independent samples compare two independent groups to see if their means are different.
I found this video to be very easy to follow. I have a clearer idea of how to use SPSS. This is an easy test to use to look at how your treatment is working.
The difference in the one sample t-test and the independence t-test was interesting to know. Having to run the stat for each group (control & depression level) seems lengthy versus running stats for independent t-test which can distinguish between groups.
Hi Dr. Grande! Please what is the best way to estimate a mean from a Likert Scale (1-strongly disagree, 2-disagree, 3-neutral, 4-agree, and 5-strongly agree)? Assume that I have transformed the data from ordinal to interval and I want to conduct a one-sample t-test. Thanks.
I learned a little bit about T-Tests in undergrad. However, I liked seeing how to actually run the test in SPSS. I also enjoyed how Dr. Grande explained the significance versus the insignificance and when to accept or reject the Null Hypothesis.
Rachel Foster I also had some exposure to t-tests in undergrad. I had mostly forgotten how useful they are and how much can be done with them. I like being able to see how to utilize the tests both in excel (which I have experience with) and in SPSS (which I do not have experience with).
Rachel Foster I also learned a little about this in undergrad but I really needed to be refreshed on the information. The explanation of things from the videos always make me feel more comfortable with the information. I am glad that there was the explanation of the acceptance or rejection of the null as well. I just to get confused by that.
Thank you for sharing this video Dr. Grande. The tables in spss seem as straightforward as the t test table in excel. I have trouble understanding what all the different numbers are showing, but having less information in the table is useful fore in interpreting what the information means.
This is great, as I am already familiar with T-Tests, this video makes me really want to try it out in SPSS as again, I have never used SPSS before. The data is straight forward and easy to follow. Having a one sample t-test is great for testing whether a treatment is effective.
Candace Fernandez I agree. The instructions are easy to follow and will be helpful in determining whether a specific treatment is effective or not while conducting research.
Candace Fernandez I wish that we were given the opportunity to try this out in SPSS. I've never used it but the video does gives a straightforward instructions how to do so in SPSS.
Dr. Grande, if the data was entered as raw scores rather than t-scores this would impact the test value, correct? Is there anything to look out for when distinguishing a test value based on the way the data is entered (tscore/zscore/raw score?) Thank you!
Independent-samples T tests are useful to demonstrate whether there are any differences that exist between two variables, treatments, and so on. The output becomes slightly more involved to look at after you run the independent-samples T test, but I liked how Dr. Grande broke the results down so it was easier to understand.
I wondered how the one sample is different from independent sample at is the independent t test on two different sample toward the sample toward the same goal.
This video was helpful in that SPSS looked a lot different when I was in undergrad so a great refresher overall on running and interpreting a T-Test in SPSS. This version of SPSS seems easier to use and more user friendly overall.
Alaina Van Gelder I have never used, or even heard of before this blass, SPSS, but I have to agree that it does seem much more user friendly and easier to use. SPSS seems like something worth looking into to use with, or instead of, Excel.
Even though I do not have any experience in SPSS, I was able to easily follow along and see the differences between the one sample t-test and independent sample t-test. I feel that SPSS would be more user friendly than excel with many of these calculations.
I still maintain that SPSS is easier to use than Excel. It is helpful to know that Excel can do so much since I already have it, but I wish SPSS was more readily available and less expensive. I appreciated Dr. Grande breaking down the results because it makes it less complex when we have a good explanation. Things in research can get so complicated, so I appreciate it when the ideas can be broken down into simpler terms. I also like that he gave the example of depression and anxiety because it gives it a more real life application that I van understand.
Jessie Howard I agree! These videos can be really complicated, and I greatly appreciate it when Dr. Grande breaks down the different terms and concepts. I, also, agree that real life examples always help me in understanding how the data is used and why.
Jessie Howard Amen sister! I am right there with you on how things can get complicated when conducting research. So, to have it broke down and explained bit by bit is helpful to us students or for me anyway.
The independent sample t-tests are obviously very useful since you can look at two groups of data. There was a lot going on in the data output but Dr. Grande gave detailed information on everything. Some of it was very familiar considering I just watched the t-test excel video before this but, naturally, SPSS does things a little bit differently.
Alicia Zahn There was a lot going on in this example. I am not familiar with SPSS so this is all new to me, but I was able to follow along and having the analysis tool to help you figure out what the next step is for me is helpful.
I found this video to be a good reminder for me on how to run and interpret a t-test on SPSS. I had forgotten just how easy SPSS is to use and understand. To me it seems much simpler than using Excel. However, I know that Excel is the more commonly used format.
Mandy Moore As I have never used SPSS before, from following the videos, especially this one when creating one sample t-tests, it does seem a lot easier than excel.
Emily Taylor Good question, Emily! I know he mentioned that SPSS is very expensive so that must be a factor. But curious to hear what other factors are considered if both programs are available.
Mandy Moore I think that SPSS is preferred because it is made specifically for research. It is expensive because it is such a valuable tool. I am sure it can run more complex tests than Excel could as well. SPSS is so much easier to use and to understand, in my opinion, as well. I don't know that Excel is more commonly used in research, or you just mean in general.
The T tests seem so much easier to understand as opposed to ANOVA. I did find Levene's test for equality of variances interesting and easy to understand!
I didn't realize SPSS could also be used to format T Tests. I also wasn't aware that SPSS could also calculate the relation between the dependent and independent variable. However I dont feel too confident to actually use SPSS. However this video was very helpful in understanding the system.
Thank you for the video. Why would someone use a one-sample t-test? It does not appear to provide data that is very useful. I think that the independent sample t-test provides more information and actually shows what levels of the independent variable are statistically significant.
I actually am a fan of SPSS over Excel as I learned how to run statistical tests through this software. Just as this video does, it is helpful to run through the steps. I found it extremely helpful to make a "cheat sheet" with the steps for each test. As I begin to learn how to use Excel to run statistical analysis if I will begin to prefer it over SPSS.
This may be what I need to use for my research design project as I am comparing the difference between two groups. Maybe by using the independent-sample t test.
Same for me. I believe the independent-sample t-test is best suited for my research project , as well. I like the examples in the videos as I'm a visual learner and for me, it helps to see how each test is used.
I had learned about t-tests in undergrad, but that was so long ago that I've practically forgotten. This was a much needed refresher. The examples were easy to follow and straightforward. I appreciate that Dr. Grande offers the analyses demos in both SPSS and Excel.

This was a clear video and I understood each explanation Dr. Grande provided. Touching on accepting and rejecting the null hypothesis was helpful!
I like that you explained when to use the different t-tests and how to calculate them. I have not used SPSS before but it seems simple enough to follow if given the opportunity.
While this was not exactly what I was looking for for my final research proposal, this video helped me understand the difference between one-sample and independent samples.
you are the greatest person ever, I love the specific and in depth explanation; especially for independent for the 2 rows of variance assumed!!!
This video was particularly helpful in clarifying how to use Levene's test for determining how to interpret the results of the t-test.
I found this video easier to understand than some other videos. I feel more confident about T-tests and SPSS because of this video. I also think watching the videos in order helped my understanding too. I watched T-test in Excel before this video and I googled related information that helped me understand this video.
I like that the past two videos were paired together. It was easier to follow along and compare the two.
This clarified the purpose of the Levene's test and gave a good example of using independent samples t test.
Seeing the tests worked out with real data is helpful. Thanks!
This video was very helpful in processing the Levene's test, especially when to accept or reject the null.
I really appreciated your explanation of how to utilize Levene's test in this video.
Best professor ❤ thank you from Algeria 🇩🇿🇱🇷
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your explanation! This is EXACTLY what I needed, I learned a lot from this. You made my day, thanks again!
I am so thankful for your videos 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
This one my first introduction to t-test. It was understandable and easy to follow.
Thank you for the information. I appreciate the example with real data and the ability to have these videos for review later.
I like the real data as well. It helps with understanding how to process the tests and what information they provide, even though it's providing what we are asking for.
Very helpful in differentiating between the two tests. Thank you!
Dr. Grande is not only a true crime guru, but also teaches statistics!!!
This video was helpful in understanding t-test using spss and determining if there is statistical significance between two groups .

Great video, I'm learning lots, thanks.
This seemed pretty straight forward and I did not feel lost as Dr. Grande explained. You put the information in and it is set up and formatted in a way that is easy to follow.
Danielle Maldonado I couldn't agree more. Most of Dr. Grande's videos are formatted so that they're easy to follow along with, thankfully.
This was a great example of one-sample and independent samples T-test. It is fairly straight forward and I can see how simple it is to plug in the information in the analysis tool. The charted information is very easy to read and the output is a common format.
Bethany Elstrom I agree this was a great example and easy to follow. The stats were easy to understand and were straight forward.
i enjoyed the video on t-test. very informative.

Jacklin Skibicki I was also grateful that he specified which different T-tests you would use in varying scenarios, whether you were comparing two different groups via an independent-samples T-test or a one-sample T-test for difference of dependent variable and mean like you mentioned.
How would this work if I wanted to just find the mean for one of the independent variables?
Very good! I liked how you explained one-sample and independent samples. One-sample compares one's groups average to another value. While independent samples compare two independent groups to see if their means are different.
Toniette Morda I thought his explanations were very clear as well. It made it very easy to follow and understand what he was doing.
I found this video to be very easy to follow. I have a clearer idea of how to use SPSS. This is an easy test to use to look at how your treatment is working.
It was helpful to see examples of how to proceed in interpreting results after rejecting or accepting the null hypothesis for Levene's test.
I was always confused which row to read from, but now I got it👌
The difference in the one sample t-test and the independence t-test was interesting to know. Having to run the stat for each group (control & depression level) seems lengthy versus running stats for independent t-test which can distinguish between groups.

Hi Dr, my SPSS is giving me two sided P results but not two tailed. Is that the same thing? My professor is asking for the sig Two tailed
thank you Dr. Grande!
Thank you for sharing this video Dr. Grande. The tables in spss seem as straightforward as the t test table in excel. I have trouble understanding what all the different numbers are showing, but having less information in the table is useful fore in interpreting what the information means.
Thank you so much for this video:)
Thanks for this helpful differentiation.
Thank you for showing the difference between the two.
This is great, as I am already familiar with T-Tests, this video makes me really want to try it out in SPSS as again, I have never used SPSS before. The data is straight forward and easy to follow. Having a one sample t-test is great for testing whether a treatment is effective.

Helpful video, thank you.
Dr. Grande, if the data was entered as raw scores rather than t-scores this would impact the test value, correct? Is there anything to look out for when distinguishing a test value based on the way the data is entered (tscore/zscore/raw score?) Thank you!
As long as the data meet the assumptions of the statistic, they can be recorded as raw scores or standardized scores (e.g. T scores, Z scores).
this helps with the difference for sure
Independent-samples T tests are useful to demonstrate whether there are any differences that exist between two variables, treatments, and so on. The output becomes slightly more involved to look at after you run the independent-samples T test, but I liked how Dr. Grande broke the results down so it was easier to understand.
Great viedo, I was able to grasp the concept and usefulness of the one-sample and independent-sample t test. Not crazy about SPSS though.

Why df is changed ????
Kudos you
Again, more SPSS in action is helpful for me. Great information about all the output numbers.
Michael Smith I agree that this was helpful in learning more about SPSS.
Michael Smith I always hear about SPSS so it is really nice to be able to see it in action.
I agree it's a tool that could definitely come in handy for those doing research and analyzing statistics.
+Michael Smith I agree. Since I have never used SPSS the more I see it the more I am able to understand.
Michael Smith I agree. The more the better.
Great info, thank you!
I love u
Good to keep in mind that one-sample t tests cannot distinguish differences between two groups whereas independent-sample t tests can.
Kimberly Hanna Yes that is good information to keep in mind
also paired samples t-test!
Kudos you
