- Опубликовано: 10 авг 2022
- Welcome back, folks! This time we make an Arduino-based RC Flying wing out of foam, with 3ch of 2 servos and a brushless motor on board, no extended fuselage or tail, simply a cool flying wing! As this is an intermediate-builder project, it may require that you have some background knowledge of using an Arduino board, and some basic knowledge of electronics.
Hang around until the end of the video to see whether this thing can fly!

Hey guys! Thanks for watching the video!
Just to rephrase the part where I stated the plane flies for ~10 minutes, I actually referred to the ideal flight time of this plane, calculating from what current the motor draws from the battery's capacity.
The plane in perfectly still weather conditions and a little more practice flying makes for better control and longer flights.
Thanks for understanding, cheers!
Consider dropping a like 👍🏻, a share, comment, and subscription to the RUclips channel if you like what you see! ✌🏻
Stay tuned for a potential upcoming video of longer flights from this flying wing.
keep up this great work and passion my friend

You have a lot of patience to take on this project from the angle you did. I'm sure you know there are a lot of ways to do this so much more efficiently and for probably the same money. Very unique approach!
Thank you very much!
Awesome video! You can tell you’ve put a lot of work into both the plane and editing of the video.
On a note about the plane, flying wings typically have their elevons always slightly up, especially for takeoff as this moves the CG forward slightly. Additionally, and I could have this wrong, but I believe flying wings have a different pitch axis then standard planes, so to counteract the different rotation they need to already be engages both during take off and cruise.
Additionally flying wings are difficult to fly because you have to have both elevons and alerons on them to help with adverse yaw, but you only have them as one set making it a little touchier especially with a far bag CG
Forgot to mention - look into differential ailerons. It’s pretty much the only solution for adverse yaw on a flying wing unless you want to start getting really technical. It also allows you to keep just the ailerons rather then adding elevons
Thank you for your comment, Charlie!
I'll keep your suggestions in mind for when I build an improved similar flying wing 👍
Yup flying these flying wings is not a straight forward thing... I'll try playing around with the CG a little more to get it more balanced in the air.
Cheers!
Nice design and construction. Thanks for sharing this video and your thoughts.
Thank you for the kind comment, Steve!
The first motor you used has around 50g of thrust which was not enough to fly.
My advice: use IMU to stabilize the system
Thanks for your advice.
Great Idea Bro !
Keep It Up.

@@Demonstrat I appreciate it! Thank you! 😊
Usa el aislante de color rosa. Esta una imagen de la pantera rosa. Ese tiene una mejor resistencia.
You could add some s-curve to the roll control to make it less sensitive. Or even better to both of the controls.
Thanks for the tip!
im still in the process of planning a different style of this plane but I have all the parts I need to build the wing part but no electronics so far, instead of doing a solid foam wing im doing a line of wing shape sillhouettes that get smaller towards the edge of the wing and im going to lay a sheet of foamboard over that frame to create the wing which both saves weight and mess
Sounds like a plan! Best of luck with your flying wing plane! :)
as discussed, here, the wingtip stabs should be about 1/3 as tall. because, the stabs increase the amount of mass located at the wingtips. and, there are adverse affects from such outboard-located mass. in order to limit the adverse affects, the stab size should be minimized. googletranslate
Hello there, David. Will consider experimenting with trimmed wing tip fins to seek better flight results. Thanks for the tip!
You might want to consider adding dihedral to your wing to increase it's inherent stability. Your plane also looks very sensitive to pitch. So in your code you might add something to change the gain on the elevon so that you can fine tune the movement faster or slower. You may also want the elevons to be trimmed up or down. The plane should be able to glide without controller input. The engine mounted above the centerline may also be contributing the pitch instability. Nice project.
Thanks for your tips about my wing, Bill! I'll consider making these changes if I choose to make an improved flying wing. Thanks!
YAAAAY!!!
If you think of revisiting this aircraft or the flying wing concept in general, you should incorporate some automatic stabilisation - even the best pilots the USAF has to offer can't fly these things unassisted, the only recorded crash of the B2 Spirit was due to a sensor failure, and as far as I'm aware it's the only full scale flying wing currently in operation.
Honestly, the fact you managed to keep this thing in the air for as long as 10 seconds was surprising and impressive, seems like you're a damn good pilot. Watching your videos, among other creators, has inspired me to start scraping together some components and hopefully build an FPV drone, or at the very least a car, so thank you for showing how simple this stuff can be.
I'll consider adding stabilization if I choose to make another plane or other form of aircraft. Thanks for your suggestion and compliments! Cheers.
Hi max! I already created your controller from the video on the description, is the receiver in the separate video same as this?
It is practically the same, yes.
at 11:56, pushrod ends SHOULD have a Z-bend; not u-bend.!!!!
Looks like arduous job, I was wondering if you possible make a wider wings? Alerion should be flapped down when going on the air, once it go airborne, lift alerion up to fly around. I cannot image all of your hard work to make it fly. I am impressed of your hard work! Good job Sir!
I've been told my aircraft is also too tail heavy, not sure if having the flaps down will work as this made my plane nose dive from launch. But I'll try again! Thanks for your kind comment! :)
Nope. That's not how elevons work!
@@oneistar6661 elevons?
Now it's time for a Arduino base Quadcopter
I have just recently made one. Watch it on my channel.
Awesome! ! I wonder if it is possible to add a VTX to it or build a VTX based on Arduino
Could work! Cheers,
Max

hey max i am looking into making this for myself and I was wondering if I needed to make the transmitterthat you made or can I use an off the shelf 2.4 GHz one. If so how do I paired it/set it up and do you have any recommendations on with to buy.
thanks
Hi there. If you're going for a streamlined radio controller and receiver. I suggest you look on amazon for the Radiomaster TX12 ELRS transmitter and an ELRS nano receiver.
@@MaxImagination thank you very much
Hey how did you mix the aleron and elevator is it in the code ?
I did not and reverted to using diagonal movements for the mixing.
Hello sorry to bother you again, but may I know Where you got those prints of the airfoil stencils? Or may I know how thick the airfoil shape is?
Hello there. Those blueprints of the stencils were drawn by me. The airfoil shape stencils from wing-end to wing middle are 11 & 22mm thick.
Hello I was just wondering if an 6000KV brushless motor would be less powered or good enough?
6000KV will be a little slower (not by much) and more powerful, yes.
Amazing video - thanks Max!
Just curious - how much would you say this drone cost to make? In terms of materials, electronic components, etc?
Thank you!
Considering that acquiring the foam would be almost free, the guts of the plane itself would cost you around $35-50 USD depending on where you shop.
@@MaxImagination awesome, thanks max! Definitely cheaper than I would have expected
I think the main problem is those joysticks on the transmitter, if you use proper ones you'll see it's way more controllable.
Thanks for the tip. Yes, I would probably counter the sensitivity by gaining more control with proper joysticks rather than the current knobs.
Cheers.
Creo que te faltó estabilizadores verticales.
There are better options out there for foam and motor. The idead of aj Arduino controllwr is cool, but aerodynamics arent there
Will consider your feedback for future wing builds as such. Thanks.
Could you make a mppt charge controller?
Will write that one down 👍
Ok
bro, for how much minutes it files on sky?
It's battery life is around 5-10 minutes.
💚💚
You should have used a much smaller esc. The calibration is saved even after the batttery is unplugged.
Hi there. You have a valid point about sizing. Though, I used what I could get my hands on at the time. 4 packs of small ESCs were all there was online, so I instead chose this 1 larger ESC.
Your video is great 👍 I made a 500 gram rc plane is it enough to fly it using 1000kw motor and 7.4v battery unit
Thank you! If all is well balanced with minimal drag, I don't see why not. You need to test it.
@@MaxImagination thanks. i will test.
Did it work?@@user-es3gm1rj5k
can someone break down how the motor is picked in this setup? The amazon page seems to be missing wattage. I want to verify why the esc, battery, and motor work together.
Hi there. For that tiny brushless motor, any ESC from small to large will be powerful enough to drive it. The ones I've linked below will work, guaranteed.
@@MaxImagination that's crazy I always thought you had to get a motor rated for certain wattage then get a battery and esc that are of less wattage
@@4kstreamer44 In general, always base your power needs from your motor. If it's a powerful BLDC motor, then you can't just use an ESC rated for a lower amperage. So actually yes, it first goes by selecting your motor, the available ESC, then battery.
@@MaxImagination thank you. We built this project in one of my classes
Your videos are amazing bro 😍
Can you help me to do a project ?
Hi! Thank you! At a certain cost, sure, how can I help you?
@@MaxImagination can you suggest best project for ece bro ?
could you ad an mpu-6050 3 axis gyro in the script???
It is possible, yes.
@@MaxImagination that would be epic, and an input to initiate it from a radio aux channel, or dissable it. AETR aux1-4, like the quad guys use, we do alot of scratch building here and im looking for solutions that can get thge kids(and myself) into learning more intricacies.

Maximum 1KM.
do u have video explaining the code?
No. I wouldn't do that.
add a 2400kv motor with a 6x 4.5 bullnose prop 100mph
Thanks for the tip 👍
I think it whould fly much better if it had landing gears and took of from the ground 😅
Hi, Ayaadh. That would be ideal for a regular-style RC trainer plane with an additional tail to go with a fuselage. However, landing gear is not found on flying wing model aircraft due to the added weight, it should be kept to a bare minimum with these types of planes.
What it probably would take is a bit of adjusting and more practice flying it here my end... 😅
Cheers.
Why never glue an electrical component directly to the styrofoam?
You don't glue components directly to polystyrene as this will rip foam chunks out when removing or replacing components.
May be you should add some kind of flight stabilization feedback using accelerometers or something!..Great job though😎🤓
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind for my future model airplanes. Thank you!

I'm new to rc plane hobby. I want to make a plane i hope to use 7.4v 2s battery and 30A esc. What motor you recommend for me 1000kw bldc or 2200kw bldc?
