    Crazy how much better some of this offense looks compared to the current day Bulls. :(

      Unfortunately, its true. While I don't really like being a critical fella, especially to another team since I'm a Nuggets fan, I followed the Bulls quite well cause of D Rose. Tom had them playing great basketball, and with Fred it seems like they don't know 'who they are' for lack of better words.

    • @grammaticalerorr4654
      @grammaticalerorr4654 9 лет назад +7

      +Luis Munoz I think it's a process dude.I'm not defending Hoiberg but Thibs sets play is really boring. You won't see McDermott and other rookies to be playing more than 12 minutes. I think Bulls need to rebuild around Butler, McDermott, Niko and Portis.

    • @Stealthbanana58
      @Stealthbanana58 9 лет назад +1

      Grammatical Erorr True :)

    • @Pan6100
      @Pan6100 9 лет назад +5

      +Luis Munoz Honestly, this looks good as a highlight video. I saw way too many games in that era where the offense looked horrendous and we'd go 4-5 minutes without a single bucket.
      I think the players need time to get out of the previous mindset and into the one that Fred's trying to instill. We also need to make a couple moves to bring in better personnel for the new system.

    • @Jman511x
      @Jman511x 8 лет назад +1

      +Pan6100 It was always a chemistry problem with the Bulls, I think their offense was bad at times because their players couldn't stay on the court to play together. The whole time Thibs was there the team was never healthy. Rose, Noah, Boozer, or Butler were always hurt, you could blame that on Thibs because of his minutes use or maybe just bad luck. You can't become a great team unless you're healthy, I believe that if the Bulls could have stayed healthy a full season they would have won a championship under Thibs by now.

    one of the reasons thibs may not have been considered an offensive-minded coach, is while he ran decent-to-great sets near the beginning of the game or even 1st half, come 4th quarter in almost any game, he often stopped being fancy on offense, and defaulted to really simple sets repeatedly; simple pnr's with rose on offense, with an emphasis on stingy defense.
    if thibs' going to theoretically coach the knicks exactly the way he coached the bulls, you're not going to get many beautiful triangle-offense-influenced sets in the 4th when the game's on the line.

    • @bballbreakdown

      I hear ya. Perhaps that could change in this setting...

    • @PlatinumONTV
      @PlatinumONTV 9 лет назад +7

      +ReCharredSigh This is where Phil comes in. He could surely help to deal with the end of game tactics. It also matters what talent you have and DRose being injured so much didn't help.

    • @jaydude272
      @jaydude272 9 лет назад +4

      +BBALLBREAKDOWN you should make a video on why the bulls stink with this new coach. they have no defense and the offense is worse under Fred.

    • @eddietran5803
      @eddietran5803 9 лет назад

      +Jose Mendiola Bulls need to seriously get rid of pau gasol and aaron brooks for a backup point guard and a better wing player. These 2 guys can't play defense and pau is too old to play starter minutes and he refuses to play bench minutes

    • @Likethatorlikethis
      @Likethatorlikethis 9 лет назад +1

      +BBALLBREAKDOWN Obviously he would build the system around his ideals but also work around the players on the knicks roster. Fancy offense for a defense minded coach will make playing that stingy defense in the 4th more difficult. Do you think the Knicks would really flourish with their current roster under Thibs? I'd love a hypothetical video like that. Showing what the Knicks players could do if they were to play the triangle well.

  • @ItzBerg

    So what exactly is Hoibergs offense then? And why isn't working with the Bulls mess of a roster? It seems like Thibs was very underrated on the offensive philosophies. This video makes me want to have Thibs come back to the Bulls.

    Spurs Motion STRONG is a great way to distract the defense BEFORE transforming into Triangle Offense = the 4-Man who helps set the Double-Staggered Screen fades-out/ flares-out to the WING SPOT after setting the last Pindown Screen.
    Center runs back across the lane a 2nd time, Block-to-Block into his original spot.

    This just made me miss good old Noah, a lot of plays from when he was carrying the team, to me he is 2-3 times better than Pau, I remember Lakers fans telling me and other Bulls fans that after 1season we would be sick of him and it would be more than half are, also Noah gets injured now the Bulls have gone 4-13, he plays hard, never quits and is the best passing big man in the NBA, if he doesn't stay with the Bulls he should sign with the GSW, he would be a perfect fit with them.

    Thanks Coach Nick for another interesting and insightful video. I always enjoy them and they enable me to understand strategy and gain a much deeper appreciation of basketball.
    I have a question in which I would be interested in your thoughts. The aspects of the triangle you highlighted make it seem as though it would completely destroy the rest of the NBA. To quote at 4:45 "How can any defense possibly defend this?". While you make this claim, how do you reconcile the fact that the Bulls ranked 24th and 27th in offensive efficiency in 2012-13 and 13-14, but were 5th in 2011-12 (before rose was injured) and 10th in 2014-15 (when Butler made his mark and the Bulls acquired Gasol)? Doesn't this suggest talent is the most important, more so over the type of system being used?

    • @bballbreakdown
      @bballbreakdown  9 лет назад +1

      It is hard to reconcile, you are right. I think a big part was the roster turnover year after year, plus the injuries. There was never much stability to grow as an offensive unit. Also, they only ran the triangle somewhere around 30% of the time, which I believe makes it hard because the offense is a little schizophrenic. The Bulls and Lakers committed to it all the time...

  • @rakhunuhepptaylor2135
    @rakhunuhepptaylor2135 5 лет назад

    Did he do this because he had a slightly past his prime Pau Gasol? Perhaps Phil did notice maybe that is why he picked up Noah for the Knicks and and their star point guard Derrick Rose who suspiciously talked about how the Triangle offense did not match his talent and skill set. (Carmelo Influence maybe?

  • @Jonas-xu7bu
    @Jonas-xu7bu 8 лет назад

    Coach since twolves just hired thibs do you think its a good fit? I worry about his tendency to overplay guys specially rubio who is injury prone. Another thing is that the triangle if i understand correctly doesn't really take full advantage of Rubio's skillset. He's a ball dominant pass 1st PG with very limited offense. I could be wrong. Or unless thibs knocks some sense into him and he starts to shoot well.

      Can't defend against it perfectly when it has the right pieces because it creates slashing lanes, Curling lanes r one on one opportunities with GREAT ONE ON ONE PLAYERS. IN honesty.. It's basic basketball at its finest... This offense obliterated the "Pick and Roll" quite easily.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 8 лет назад

      +a week ago Depends on what you run for personnel for defense. If they can't communicate well and see where players are going to be, then the triangle just does its thing. Its not just one a man thing. Its a concerted effort to stop the ball from moving and flowing at each junction.

    Carmelo and Porzingis will both have a field day with Thibs at the helm.
    They'll get so many minutes and touches at the post.
    Knicks also have more personnel suited for the Triangle than the Bulls.
    If problems will arise, it will be more mental and psychological. I don't know how the Knicks especially Carmelo wouldl react under a tough disciplinarian. Also will there be a power struggle between Phil and Thibs?

    • @bballbreakdown
      @bballbreakdown  9 лет назад +2

      This could be a problem with Melo, but the biggest thing is to make sure he doesn't play guys more than 36 mins a game..

  • @theheebs100
    @theheebs100 8 лет назад

    I will counter this argument by stating that 1. guys are looking for the 'home-run' pass so often that they are frequently missing the right pass. this video accentuates the times when it works, but it's still clear when good pass opportunities are being overlooked. and 2. there are many instances of opportunities of cuts that will wield buckets that are not realized by the players. I still love Thibs as a coach overall, but billing him as a both sides of the ball guy is over selling him. I understand that the guys on the court are like 60% responsible for the problems I mentioned, but truly good offensive coaching takes care of that

    Can the triangle offense be used against a zone

  • @rkohulk1
    @rkohulk1 9 лет назад

    The triangle isn't even intended to be a super high powered GSW type of offense in the first place, the point of the triangle is to take the talent that you do have and if they lack in certain aspects of offense, the triangle puts them in position to maximize their strengths. Also it is a time controlling offense so if you execute correctly, this offense will give you a great building block to start every defensive possession. The 90's Bulls were never the highest scoring team, and neither was the 2000's Lakers but in the playoffs, the triangle got them the baskets they needed and because the clock was being controlled there defense was that much stronger leading to championships. Perfect for Thibs if he can turn around the Knicks. They need more hustle role players like Lance Thomas who can play multiple positions and GUARD multiple positions. Build a team of hustle players around Porzingis, find an elite point guard (Westbrook 2017), and they become a contender

I can't wait to see what he does with Ricky Rubio, Andrew Wiggins, Zack Lavine and Karl Anthony Towns plus they are going to get yet another top 10 draft pick. This team with Thib's defense will become a legit threat in the west.

      +Bryanwny it's crazy how many people who are head coaches after phil Jackson's influence have all failed. the only one who hasn't failed is steve kerr, and even then you could argue he's more heavily influenced by pop.
      luke Walton could be the next phil disciple who does well, but then you could make the argument that because he started as an assistant to steve kerr, that he picked up on more coaching principles than just phil's.

      +Ernesto Hendrix is stevens influenced by phil? i didn't know that. i think when i said influenced, i meant it in the sense that the head coaches now have either been former players or assistant coaches to pop/phil. so in that vein, those who have taken after phil have overwhelmingly failed. on the other hand, almost all of pop's disciples have done well.

    Wished the Bull never fired Thibs, i personally like good defensive coaches but i think his rotations needed a lot of room to improve on because he played his role players for too long all the time and you could see it in the play-offs.

    i have a dumb stupid Question. Is the Triangle Offense the best Offense there is in Basketball? Is it worth it to learn its Principles?

    • @Likethatorlikethis
      @Likethatorlikethis 9 лет назад

      +Vol deMort Definitely is worth learning. If you can run triangle with a team, you will excel at basketball. Just remember there are two sides of the floor. When I play in Leagues or even with friends and I have team members who can run the triangle it is very very hard to beat when it is done right. Easy wide open shots and layups. I usually end up being the only one who does the pinch post work, basically the position in this video that pau and noah run even though I'm not very tall. I notice a lot more players prefer to be guards or SG's during pick up games and such.

      Its principles are universal for any good offense. Google the 7 principles of a sound offense from Tex, and you'll see.

    Coach why do today's NBA offenses are mainly focused on pick and rolls? and why offensive sets like the triangle and princeton offenses have become less successful in today's NBA.. I run a triangle with my high school team that is somwhat similar to Coach Tim Cone from the Philippines run because it is an offensive set that teaches players to develop their fundamentals and I find it disappointing that pick and rolls are dominant in the NBA and in my opinion, it sets a bad example for young and developing players if they continue to see this kind of offense instead of relying on ball movement, body movement and reading plays as it happens

    • @fortyforfree
      @fortyforfree 9 лет назад +1

      That and everyone plays ice defense. Which was made famous per say by Thibs

    • @Likethatorlikethis
      @Likethatorlikethis 9 лет назад

      +StraightButGay NBA is entertainment first IMO. PnR is easy to follow, leads to exciting plays and highlights key players. Makes it easy for casual fans to follow. PnR will give D.Jordan an alley oop from chris paul. Triangle to an open lay up or a mid range jumper is great from a coaches perspective but isn't nearly as entertaining to a fan sitting on a coach or in the stands. That is partially what I believe. Also learning a system takes a lot of time, and requires all the players to collaborate and buy into the rolls of that offense. If guys are being traded to different systems constantly it can be a little more difficult. The spurs have a great thing going, the warriors too. Implementing a system efficiently like triangle cannot just be done on the fly. As mentioned you need to be able to read plays as they develop and perform the correct option. Triangle offense is so beautiful when performed properly and the fundamentals are so important to the game. I agree it is a shame more are not using it. shout out to the Philippines. I have played with guys from the PBA and they really understand motion offense and systems like the triangle and Princeton offense.

    • @stupid2574
      @stupid2574 9 лет назад +1

      +Like that or like this even if it looks complicated for the casual fan you have to appreciate the beauty of the triangle when run correctly

    • @blc0179
      @blc0179 9 лет назад

      +Like that or like this yeah here in the Philippines, teamwork and ball movement is always a priority.. even when playing pick up you will seldom see players go one on one.. me as a young coach, i much rather see sets being ran and seeing a system that actually is running instead of PnRs... its beautiful to watch when u see your players run a play successfully because u know it was successful because u know that ur players believe in the system..
