feardbro Bro there's nothing like reading a comment from someone who knows what they're talking about, and reading your comment is nothing like seeing someone who knows what they're talking about.
feardbro Bro You also could use strong side cutters or a weak side big man off the dribble penetration or even a passing big who is a decent enough threat to make the other 4 attempt to help out on d when the 1 on 1 is to much. Rather not rely on just a 33-38% percentage shot that the outer four will be running off the line.
Orlando Rodriguez This North Carolina vid that this person used was 2 years ago. I'm a North Carolina fan and they only had 1 efficient 3 point shooter on the team that year. They won the ACC tourney last year and went to the NCAA championship last year to lose by 3 points
We ran this exact offense against zones. We also called it "X" There's a million ways to score, but the most effective way is to play high low between the 2 bigs.
this is more of a just go and play offense which can be effective if u have a good balance on ur team and playmakers but doesn't really work with lower leveled players
It's easy to beat a zone. Overload one side. one man up top, one high post, one wing, one post, one in corner. If you got good shooters you'll get 3s galore. It works at every level
For some reason a lot of people don't realize how effective a basic overload play can kill a zone before even switching up the options you run. It gets frustrating when folks wanna play selfish against a zone
The trouble with that is the poor spacing. A good zone will have at least 4 players guarding those 5 players, with at least 2 defenders within about a step of the ball holder, plus the defender of the ball holder who is in his face. Suddenly every pass is a pass through traffic, and room to shoot is minimal. It works against teams with poor zone D, but better to coach to beat the good teams, rather than just to beat the bad teams.
Aside from what others said, it depends on the level of play. At college and pro 3's are great, but most people at lower levels imagine themselves better 3-point shooters than they really are. Then some great 3-point shooters simply have an off day. The high-low game talked about in the beginning of the video will consistently beat a 2-3 unless your post players are trash.
Great video and analysis. only issues I had with NC's offense was that the bigs were pulling in a few times when they should have popped to either get the shot or create space, and there were also multiple plays where the guards didn't do a good job recognizing a solid post up and essentially squandered a chance for a nice close look.
Guards don't win DPOY because an offense can be designed to go away from an elite perimeter defender. Look at how the league goes away from Kwahi now when they play the spurs. Compare that to an elite defensive big man, who can be brought outside only by an elite shooting big, but even then its hard because you can keep your defensive big in if you switch to zone schemes. It's hard to play man to man because most teams don't have 4 good defenders who can switch on everything and/or fight through screens -- which is why Golden State is destroying the league (because they have Klay, Draymond, KD, Igoudala)
4:35 - it's imperative that there's communication, so someone gets back for breakaway defense, the whole video shows how effective 2-3 is for rebounding, and that could become a quick 3 on 1. With 3 in the paint - unlikely all 3 would be in a good position to snag a rebound, someone has to get back
+A.I. Heres a simple way to break a full court trap off a basketball being made… Have your 2 guard take the ball out and your 1 guard back to receive the pass in. Have your forwards at the mid court line on both sides of the court best passer to the side the ball in being inbounded (ex. ball is to left of basketball best passing forward goes to that side) and he flashes to the ball, pass it to him. Then your 1 guard flashes to the middle of the court looking for the pass if he is not available, your 2 guard (guy passing in the ball) flashes right behind him. If neither pass is available have your 1 guard peel back to get the ball and flip it. So now the forward on the other side is in possession of the ball and have your guard repeat the same flashes. Sorry if it hard to understand without a visual but its simple enough to figure out, great for anyone coaching middle school, high school even some colleges. Let me know if it help at all and good luck!
Put a man in the middle one guard off ball behind ball. Have the guy with ball look center first. Push ball second then quick reversal to off guard and push opposite sideline
never heard such an extensive video on such a basic thing. growing up it was automatic in my comp to play 2-3 on defense and 3 outside, high-low inside. it wasn't til we got more skilled (like a couple of years) that we started playing 3-2 or full-court presses (I always played in little teams so usually high-pressure D with a lot of switching up)
At my school I'm 10 years old on Thursday 8th March 2018 my team is cubs and we are going to play against ontario and Los amigos and my coach said when we had practice that we need to watch this video so that we know what to do and I watched it so yeah my coaches name is coach meraska.Shes also a good coach at cucamonga elementary school is Rancho.
Awesome tips you give there! I lost my last game against a 2-3 zone, so i went on youtube and google to search for some ways to beat their defense next time (this saturday :/) After hours of search i finally found your video, which will probably be a good help to beat their team this weekend. Thanks alot and keep on doing these kind of videos pleasseee !!! ^^
coach... can you give a step by step on how and when to run the x motion on a ball reversible? Running it seems like it limits the high post to one side of the court so I'm not sure when to effectively use it. thanks.
+Marlon Bravo The goal of it is to rotate both interior big men so both get high post opportunities. Simply put when the ball is reversed they perform the X. It does limit what a side a big can be but they can always communicate to mix things up. Meaning a big can run baseline once and call for a reversal to switch the sides. Hope this helped :)
rarely will I do ISO & i always score against a zone. i never even thought about approaching it differently. i just do the same thing i always do. move without the ball. catch & shoot quickly mainly from baseline, run on fastbreaks, and shoot off of screens. and i dont even really shoot threes. either its no different with my style of play, or their zone just sucks.
My high school team ran this type of offense against zone a lot, as a big, I played at the high post and got so many assist from passing to the big on the block and had got so many easy mid range jumpers
this video is awesome I'm teaching my kids this offense and it runs smoothly and it looks great. I even have beginners running it and it's easy for them. Thank you for this video

I feel like the more space there is the better the zone gets...like couldn't you make the guards screen each other and essentially play 2 on 2 ? If the offense is designed to keep rotating wouldn't the best thing be to keep your players close by to each other so when they rotate you automatically get penetration
Coach. Can you analyse the offense of the philippine team in fiba asia 2015. My team is not that tall but we finished 2nd to china. It must be interesting coach.
At the 6:02 mark if the player who inbounds the ball stays in the corner he will not be open for the corner 3 because the defense will not move. Thoughts?
usually we attack the middle off a pick and roll or something then the three other players rotate back to a 3 2 offense and the roll will pass out for a 3
I dont understand...... NBA like to play man on man but most teams score with ease and would go way over 100 points.... I dont usally see zone gets blown out like this
My team just got ripped a new one today because of zone defense. We simply couldn't play around it (we're at the very bottom of the league :) ), so thanks for the video.
say if your on the wing and you try to drive but the defenders come and snatch the ball everytime you do, what can you do to prevent that from happening?
+Jamar Eddings If drive with the intent of getting to the basket but if another defender pinches in and goes for that steal, you must pass it out to an open shooter. Good spacing will also help with that.
How are you adjusting this offense for a 1-3-1? I find it the second most common defense in youth zone basketball. Most trap the corners out of it. Thanks.
+Monika Susko I'm not too familiar with attacking a 1-3-1, but moving the ball well of course would be effective. Have shooters in the corner along with a big at the short corner.
+Monika Susko There is a simple play we call "Rover" that will pick apart both a 1-3-1 or a 3-2 defense. Start by positioning your 4 and 5 men on the blocks down low. Then positions 2 of your remaining 3 guards above the three point line and a little wider than the post players. Finally, you'll want to have your best shooter (usually the 2 guard), run the baseline. Your two post players will set screens for the player running the baseline, the "rover". The most important part of this play is that the two guards up top use shot and pass fakes to move the defense to get some good open shots for your rover player. Once he's taken some shots, then the two guards up top can begin faking the pass to the corner to the rover player, and begin penetrating to the middle for open shots. You can also run one of the post players to the elbow of the free throw line, for a backdoor for the rover, or just an open shot. There are many options off of this play, and it's really simple. Try it out. Please ask questions if this isn't clear enough.
This is not what embarrassing 2-3 zone means. Embarrassing 2-3 zone means getting open layups and close shots and actually making the defense start playing man to man. Offence with playmaker going on the same side as where he passed, and where to big men are also on the same side leads to better scoring. There you have basically man to man defense, and on the other side fully open shot you can open over post-man.
Alright we just lost last night and the team played a tight 2-3 because we have 2 Allstate posts they basically let us shoot 3's we ended up 2-21 for 3's. How do you suggest you play against a 2-3 when they're letting you shoot and you can't hit?
+angelboy1488 Well if they really pack it in and you still can't make it that's tough. Try the high low actions with your posts. Also on outside shots have your bigs really crash the glass hard. That would be my points of emphasis.
i think 2-3 still is good since era is about shooting 3pts forwards also added 3pt talent onto their skillset while before they didn't. But well not many coaches play good defense to their team, Brad Stevens does lol. Wanna remember newly lost 16 W streak?
joshua rodriguez I would, but I don't think may teams in college run 3-2 zone defenses. I would not know where to look for tape of a 3-2 zone offense. I think the same offense I showed in this video could work against a 3-2 as well.
Well your teammates can screen for you all over the floor even against the zone. Off ball often to get an open 3. If they run out on you then you can drive. Try some set plays with screens and also basic flare screens as seen in this video. On-ball more screens to let you create. One more thing you can try is putting yourself at the high post. This can allow you to get the ball in the middle of the floor. Teams will try to take that away which can free up open shots for your teammates. Hope this helps!
the key to zone is to get your D to play 5 of u against 4 of them, at worst u play 5 on 5. these dudes got caught playing 2 on D vs 1 which allowed for simple passes. its all a numbers game. an overload doesnt necessarily work because u just have to worry about the ball n move on the pass... just have to get around picks
Poly Nikes that's the most confusing shit. People playing pick up games with zone defenses that they don't understand yet don't play man when it's the easiest to use?

Lung-dik Dawrah It's been a dark year to be a Syracuse fan. Our loss of scholarships is finally catching up to us.
Keep the ball moving a zone defense can't react fast enough if you move the ball. And use penetration and ball fakes.
If the refs were calling 3 seconds in the key then this offense would not work. Did basketball get rid of more rules to get highlights?
I completely agree, 3 seconds in the key should have been called many times...
when executed properly the perimeter players will always be moving around, causing the bogs to keep rotating in and out of the paint
That video was perfect. Thank you it explained alot of different plays and screen options.

6:42 it seems like a man to man defense in this play but I believe it's a good idea to post up early because they might foul problem
Playing against a zone is my favorite because the catch and shoot mid range jumper is my bread and butter. I just go to the empty spaces
Funny cause we run a play called gaps to combat a 2-3. With the post switching between high post and on the block. Same exact concept and it works
Great evaluation! Thanks for sharing this video.
North Carolina’s zone offense is EXACTLY the same offense we run as a 8th grade team. And yes it tears up offenses.
@6:20, it's what I run against 2-3 zone as a quick-hitter. very effective.
I feel like the more space there is the better the zone gets...like couldn't you make the guards screen each other and essentially play 2 on 2 ?
If the offense is designed to keep rotating wouldn't the best thing be to keep your players close by to each other so when they rotate you automatically get penetration

Great job dissecting the zone
Your good and clear at explaining coach!
Are the high post and slot player on the same side or opposite sides?
This is not what embarrassing 2-3 zone means. Embarrassing 2-3 zone means getting open layups and close shots and actually making the defense start playing man to man. Offence with playmaker going on the same side as where he passed, and where to big men are also on the same side leads to better scoring. There you have basically man to man defense, and on the other side fully open shot you can open over post-man.

my coach love😍😍😍😍😍 this video so much and she is assigned it for my basketball team for homework
"Power move" at 2:07 was a charge. D should have flopped.
my team is not very good on offense but i am their best player so i was wondering if when they play a 2-3 zone how can i beat that individually.
+andre jones Well you have to give me more info than that. What kind of player are you? Big man? Guard? Are you a shooter?
+Coach Daniel i am a point guard who can shoot but prefers to drive.
+Coach Daniel thank you so much for help u gave perfect advice and i hope it works too
tim miles needs to watch this video
the key to zone is to get your D to play 5 of u against 4 of them, at worst u play 5 on 5. these dudes got caught playing 2 on D vs 1 which allowed for simple passes. its all a numbers game. an overload doesnt necessarily work because u just have to worry about the ball n move on the pass... just have to get around picks
they're doing the right things but they're not really embarrassing the 2-3 zone... notice the turnovers, rushed shots, and missed open shots..
woah missed open shots, turnovers and rushed shots in a basketballl game??? crazyyy
Offensive inside, offensive front, offensive distant
Nice video thx.im coaching 10year olds tomorrow.we have no subs all game.any tips on def etc dealing with tired players
I really want to run this offense with my middle schoolers. This plus the flex would be just about all I need. I've watched this video about 12 times
Damn good video. Very helpful!
This is a very good video....very good for young coaches
Nick Ward and Jackson from MSU are going to eat up the zone by the orangeman on Sunday
We used to play 1-3-1 zone and mixed defense triangle-2
Roy has been running this offenses for 20plus years
I hate playing 2-3 D. This is the standard for pickup games where I live and I hate it. People don't really know when to switch, rotate, etc.
Poly Nikes that's the most confusing shit. People playing pick up games with zone defenses that they don't understand yet don't play man when it's the easiest to use?
Church ball tournament coming up Saturday haha
Hey! Who is this?
Coach Daniel I’m coach axel do you play church basketball too?
Screening in the offense 4:47
How set up 2 to 3 zone and set up a dunk
+Joseph Winters Throw to the guy in the slot. It pulls the defender out of the middle and you can lob to the high post guy thundering down the lane.
Who is watching this before a game
No idea what he's saying but still watching is this the new bee movie but every time it says bee it speeds up
Pause at 3:40 and it looks like the Virginia Tech player has one leg😂😂😂
Lol
