    "Where the Streets Have No Name(s)" references a longing for a place where people aren't put into boxes based on their street addresses. It was of particular interest during the sectarian civil war that went on in N. Ireland for decades. Someone could know that you were a Catholic or Protestant based on your address in places like Belfast, and the song is just wishing for a time when those sorts of divisions dissolve.

    • @bminturn
      @bminturn 3 года назад +8

      @@dubiousdistinction6500 like most U2 songs, it's easy to get a more generalized meaning from the song as well. I don't know if there is a "wrong" way to look at the song, if you know what I mean. They do a pretty good job of taking something specific, like civil war in Ireland, and making it very general in a song like this, so that it feels very specific to each listener...if that makes sense. Like they'll write a song such as "Love Is Blindness", which is actually about an IRA car-bombing, but disguise it as an unrequited love song in 6/8 (basically a waltz). They have taken a lot of heat for writing songs that way, but it seems like they just perfected the formula to me.

    • @bodies2magenta
      @bodies2magenta 3 года назад +9

      I also heard that the song *Where the Streets Have No Name* was inspired during Bono's charitable work in the unfathomable impoverished country of Ethiopia, where sheet metal huts created thin lanes, which were operated like streets to their limited capacities, and none of these haphazardly makeshift streets possessed *no names* - only based on the poor people's memory of where they lived. The lyrics, "Our love turns to rust (metal homes in decrepit states), and 'trampled in dust'..." Alongside, "High on a desert plain..." all spoke of Ethiopia, and the inundated hopeless situation summed up by Bono's efforts, "And when I go there, I go there with you, it is all I can do...".

    • @bminturn
      @bminturn 3 года назад +5

      @@bodies2magenta I've read that as well. Again, U2 songs sometimes come at you from more than one point of view (like "One") or have multiple influences (like this song, or "Love Is Blindness").

    • @bodies2magenta
      @bodies2magenta 3 года назад +3

      @@bminturn - Absolutely, and however one desires to interpret their songs, it is perfectly acceptable - that is the beauty of subjective interpretations; as it allows the listener to conclude what it truly means to them. I just enjoy sifting through the background potentiality of varied backstories and attempting to grasp the inspiration behind the lyrical content. However, whatever it means to one individual, that is, in my humble opinion, the vital aspect of the track at that point in time. Thanks for your response, take care of yourself my friend.

      I like the album version of the song better, but they also do a great job live. Most of their songs are better live, but they are actually dubbing like 3 guitars for the album versions, for a richer sound (which they obviously can't do live). U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin, formed in 1976. The group consists of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). Initially rooted in post-punk, U2's musical style has evolved throughout their career, yet has maintained an anthemic quality built on Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's chiming, effects-based guitar sounds. Their lyrics, often embellished with spiritual imagery, focus on personal and sociopolitical themes. Popular for their live performances, the group have staged several ambitious and elaborate tours over their career.

    You should see the way Bono commonly develops the lyrics for their songs. The band plays the music and he starts by just making sounds. He then elevates those sounds to mumble/nonsense words. And he progresses to the point where it's a song with lyrics. It's kind of a cool process to see.

    I can’t believe this is your first reaction to U2, but so glad you finally got around to them (you definitely need to go watch this music video, btw.) This is definitely a rabbit hole you could-SHOULD-fall down, since these school buddies from Dublin have been active since the late 70s, and are still touring (selling out huge stadiums) and putting out music in their early 60s now. They do put out a lot of music that has deep meaning to it, about a lot of social justice issues.
    I’ve also got to mention some things I personally like about these guys: they’ve managed to stay together as a band and as friends for practically 50 years now. No lineup changes or anything. And they are not known for living a wild, “rockstar” lifestyle- with groupies, etc. In fact, lead singer Bono (Paul Hewson) has been married to his high school sweetheart all this time, with no rumors of cheating or other bad behavior.
    By the way, this song specifically relates to ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. In Belfast, especially when this song was written in the ‘80s (before the fragile (and relative) peace that has been hanging on there for several decades now), Catholics did not go into certain parts of town- onto/past certain streets-and Protestants did not go into others. He’s saying he wants it to just be where it doesn’t matter, where you can walk through any neighborhood and it shouldn’t matter whether you’re this or that, it shouldn’t be something that would get people killed.

    Saw U2 in Ottawa, Canada in 1986 in front of only 10,000 fans ... my brother saw them maybe 6 years earlier at a bar in Ottawa in front of only 300 fans ... lucky him.

    I live in the US southwest, and Joshua Tree remains my anthem for any road trips I might take across it. To me the album encompasses the feel of the area like no other I have heard in 30+ years of loving the desert.

    There's a video where they are in Vegas singing on a roof top stopped traffic. It's really missing something without seeing them live. Also they sing with BB King When Love Comes to Town. These guys are poets.

    The Joshua Tree is one of my favorite albums. Bono said the song was inspired by the streets of Belfast, where you know what class of people you were dealing with by the street they lived on. The band grew up during what the Irish called The Troubles. Bono wanted to be in a place where the streets had no name and everyone was treated equally. He is very influenced by his faith in God and Christ, and the album shows that. It is beautiful.

    Great song, great album. For the best impact though this needs to be experienced as part of the live concert. This song is the tempo peak of their concerts. The songs build until streets, then the tempo eases off and the emotion builds until the end of the concert, usually on their slow powerful songs. For me I suggest watching an entire concert for the effect. Personally live at Slane castle DVD is the finest live performances they have ever released. Every song is incredible together as a whole and I doubt Bono has ever sung better. Though the ZooTV live performance of streets is better, the lighting, the performances it's EPIC.

    You should have reacted to the official video of this song. It's very very good. U2 is one of the best bands in history, with great musicians, all of them, and with a lead singer, Bono, who has a very good voice and an absolutely magnetic personality.

    If you'd like to see what is perhaps the single event that launched U2 to legit global stardom, watch the performance of the song Bad, at Live Aid, July 1985 (a few weeks after I graduated from high school). The video on RUclips is 12 minutes long but worth every moment. By way of background, U2 has 14 studio albums, over 150 million sold globally and has won 22 grammys, more than any other band in history. Obviously that stuff is Wikipedia info, but it's nice to be reminded just how significant this band is. As an aside, one of the prizes of my modest collection of signed music memorabilia is a fully signed copy of Joshua Tree, signed on the inside gatefold. It's a work of art.

    Just listening to this relaxes me. My husband and I have been married for over 38 years. If only… we could get away to nowhere for a week, we would be able to reconnect to what’s really important. We live in the Texas hill country outside of Austin. Camping suits me just fine. We used to go camping with our kids when they were little. But the snakes. They’re everywhere here. So no camping for me unless it’s in the dead of winter. And that wouldn’t be pleasant either. There has to be a way. Ugh. Love this song. Remember when this album came out. Not a bad song on it. Thanks for the react!

    Please also check out their half-time show for Super Bowl 36 (which was after 9/11). They did an excellent job (IMO) paying tribute tp those who lost their lives that day. They did their song Beautiful Day and then Where the Streets Have No Name.

    You guys should watch their impromptu video version of this song live on a San Francisco downtown rooftop. It’s a thing that the BEATLES made famous. Still, it’s a great video and they didn’t have city permission to do it. Nobody knew about it until they started playing from up there. They were maybe 3 to 5 stories up and people below on the street started looking up and gathering. Once word got out, it was a big event and the police took notice and shut them down, In a nice way. Because it was illegal to do without permission, they had to shut them down. Of course the band knew this and did it anyway for effect. One of their very best videos. Great band. For a time, they were easily the biggest band in the world. Got some really great songs, just take your pick.

    I was at the U2 Rattle and Hum movie/concert in 1987 at ASU where a friend was attending school. Joshua Tree is an amazing album but the entire Achtung Baby album is a masterpiece - tracks 4, 5 and 6 are among the most poetically tragic love songs ever written, the album is very uplifting as well with songs like One and Ultraviolet. The last time I saw U2 was for the Pop album tour where Rage Against The Machine opened for them, amazing show both bands. I like the Pop album okay, If God Will Send His Angels is the best track from that album imo. I've seen them 3 times, always a great show with U2.

    The story is that where these guys grew up in Ireland you could tell if someone was catholic or protestant based on the name of the street where they lived. This song longs for a place where that doesn’t matter.

    I just commented on your "Bullet The Blue Sky" reaction 👏You need to see the amazing video for this (inc. in their 'Rattle & Hum' documentary) - shot in LA on 7th and main, from a rooftop - they performed it LIVE, with no promo or advertising - people literally flocked onto the 'streets'! It caused CHAOS - 1,000's people on the ground and folks hanging out their windows to watch! Cops tried to shut it down - but U2 went ahead & gave an legendary performance! Peace from Ireland☘️
