Makalu - coming soon :)
This Lhotse video is part of my Summit Video Series which also includes videos of climbing Everest, K2 and Kanchenjunga (links above). The same video style is also coming out very soon for our successful summits on Manaslu, Ama Dablam...and more!
In 2021 I guided six of the worlds 8000m mountains, summiting four of them and turning back just meters from the summit of two - Makalu and Dhaulagiri. I tried, when ever possible and appropriate to do so, to capture the small intricacies of the mountain and the terrain we climb on route to the summit. Join me for the full journey to the summit!
Lhotse Summit Climb starts from the South Col at 7950m, the very next morning after having climbed Everest. We descend the Geneva Spur and head back around to the Lhotse Face. From here it's a direct line up towards he Lhotse Couloir, into this and up to the summit.
I hope you enjoy watching the videos - please let me know in the comments (I try and reply to them all)

Thanks
Endless thanks goes to Himalayan Guides Nepal for their logistics and support. Same goes for Maddison Mountaineering who I used for Everest, Lhotse and K2. Big love goes to Lhakpa Whongchu Sherpa who stands by my side on all of these big expeditions. And to Becks Ferry for trusting in me to organise and guide her on these incredible mountains in 2021.

I am a 70 year old woman that is in a wheelchair. I LOVE watching your videos. I am able to climb mountains vicariously through your videos. Thank you so much.
so much to learn from you i am a 20 year boyy can you give some tip to me how to live a good life and what mistakes should i avoid, how can i be financially independent.I will wait for your replyy. And loved your passion towards the mountain.
Dude summits Everest and then the next day is just like "Yeah fuck it, let's do Lhotse too." What a beast.
🤣🤣 I know right? Watching this and seeing Everest just chilling in the background not looking anywhere near as tall 😂😂
It's almost rare to see climbing video of Lhotse. Forgotten 8k peak because of its mighty famous neighbor. Excellent. Thank you sir
Thanks very much Robert! It's such a good climb in its own right.
I'd rather get myself a hotel room in paradise for 2 weeks and sleep with luxury prostitutes and drink a glass of champagne on the beach in the evening than spending so much to climb a mountain, sleep in tents, put my body through exhaustion and cold and low oxygen. I'm the opposite, you'd have to pay me to climb those mountains. At least 1 million
Dracula. i'd pay you a ton of shit.
i would do it

The best part about Jons videos are his enthusiasm. Other creators always groan and moan, this guy is always happy no matter what he finds something good to say.
Not a mountain climber myself but I like watching videos on high attitude climbing and I just love your videos. This is by far best Lhotse video I have found on RUclips. I like the Everest videos as well. Never seen anybody document the expiration as good as you. Hope more people will start watching your video. They deserve better.
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. I hope lots of people will enjoy them as well!
I think this is as stunning a video on mountaineering as I have ever seen - especially given the context of the Everest summit the day before. Mindblowing visuals..........that final couloir.........just WOW!!
It’s such a cool climb - glad you enjoyed the video 🙏
That was pretty incredible Jon. Those of us that watch your climbing abilities arent really surprised that you could handle Everest one day and Lohtse summit the next.
Thanks very much! It's a really cool few days being able to do them back to back and actually not as ridiculous as it may seem!
This is common among experienced mountaineers.
Wonderful channel. I am fascinated by these high peaks. I don't have the money or the stamina to climb them but thank you for sharing your experience and letting us armchair travellers go to the summit of these magnificent peaks!! and you make it look so easy!!
Really nice video, Jon. Thanks for taking us on your journey. Seriously impressed with that camera, too!
Thanks Cameron - glad you enjoyed the video! Its all done on GoPros!
Pozdrawiam was koledzy. Jestem wdzięczna za ten film. Widoki są... bardzo ładne. Wspinaczka w trakcie okna pogodowego wygląda niezwykle. Po prostu super! ❤❤❤❤. Wchodźcie dalej. Renata 🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱
I look again this video during your new journey on the top the 13 may 2024. It's one way to follow your new great adventure. 🙏
Must be a strange feeling having summitted everest the previous day, then just having a 'relatively' easy day almost alone climbing the mountain next to it, looking over to everest in all its glory and thinking about how packed it must be up there
Bro your fitness levels are insane. You are so upbeat and positive in your approach. Generally 3000 meters is quiet traumatic
Watched k2 & Everest, now the 3rd one.
Lucky to have that kind of videos because I certainly will not do this myself. :)
Spectacular views! Thank you.
I'm sorry, you summited Everest... and then did this THE NEXT DAY? I am flabbergasted in the best way. Congrats, and holy cow!
I’m intrigued by this kind of climbing and I think it’s awesome! 😃
That shot shot of Everest summit tho... nice work!!
Lhotse is monstrous it’s just not as big as it’s brother. Awesome footage.
It sure is
Another great video of high altitude mountaineering. Amazing feat to climb Mt Everest and Lhotse in consecutive days, you truly are living a dream! What an awesome environment to be in!
Incredible how Everest resembles K2 at 4:26-4:40.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your summit videos, Jon. Heading out to Nepal for the first time in a few weeks. Wont go above 6500 but watching a lot of videos in the evenings. Yours are really well put together. Cheers.
Hallo from Geece! I am watching your videos. What a view!!!!!! Stay safe!
Thanks for watching!
Excellent clear video footage of the line. Nice!
Amazing video. Some of the most impressive views of Everest anywhere. So Lucky this guys with the weather, they had two ace days in a row yo there. Of course It has to close down on the summit... The summit of Lhotse is notoriously delicate to stand in too... Big ice cornice and a 4000m fall on the other side. And as much as the fixed rope and oxígen takes a bit of the adventure sense, to climb the Everest and Lhotse on consecutivo days would be damn near imposible without these two things. I am sure It has been done by some freak but two days climbing on the death zone to the highest mountains there are, is no joke.
Amazing views!
Beautiful 🙏
Thanks Adam 👍
Who sets up the ropes? Who pays them since every climber uses these ropes? Is it done every year? How are people able to climb without the ropes to set up the ropes?
The ice doctors delegated by the government of Nepal
It’s the Sherpas. They are true mountaineers who climb without ropes. Western climbers just use the ropes to get to the top!
'super cool' footage Jon. Loved the commentary! Make it seem so simple.
Haha yeah, didn’t realise how often I said ‘absolutely amazing’ or ‘super cool’ - hopefully you’ll enjoy the Everest and K2 videos coming out soon!
You are a true mountaineer, seems to me you genuinely enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Many would never think of Lhotse because climbing it wont bring validation like Everest does. Enjoyed watching, thanks for the content
It’s the Sherpas. They are true mountaineers who climb without ropes. Western climbers just use the fixed ropes to get to the top! And then brag about it.
Its been brilliant seeing the ease that your team has demystified the highest peaks on the planet, This Lhotse climb I thought to myself "Just how many climbers do you really want Jumaring on a fixed rope at any one time?" Lhotse 5, but goodness knows how many on Everest the day before, did you feel the situation around the Hilary step was a bit Sketchy?
incredible content
It’s the Sherpas. They are true mountaineers who climb without ropes. Western climbers just use the fixed ropes to get to the top! That’s why he could climb it so fast. Try climbing it without fixed ropes on a new route.
Thanks for your comment, not quite accurate but not far off - the Sherpa/Nepali do climb with ropes.
For your info, I did actually climb a new route on Lhotse this year! From 7700m (high camp) to 8250m) I climbed and fixed most of it myself with support/assistance from my lead Sherpa Siddhi and Pemba.
@@JonGuptasilenced him 😂 he’s probably never been above 2000m

Thank you 🙏
Did you do Lhotse at the same outing as Everest??
I like your video. Thank you very much
Thanks Toni.
Hey Jon how are you ? I love your video it has to be one of the best Lhotse summit video, could you tell me how can I train for an 8000m peak I already climb and train every day, but I’m kind of lost on how to really train for it, and also what did you film this with ?
Thank you again for taking us along. Did you stay at camp 4 after the everest summit? Amazing
Hi GG, yes after summited Everest we stayed at the South Col and then went up Lhotse the next day 👍
@@JonGupta that is an unreal amount of time at 8k. Thank you for the insight.
All I saw was a guy who forgot the milk on the way home from Everest.
His wife called: Hey honey… can you get milk on the way home?
Not to mention… that climbing Lhotse after Everest is a very exclusive club. Not many have done that.
Wow…. 💪❤️
This might be a silly question, but i want to know the answer. When you summit these mountains and all the traffic on Everest, do you come down the same line as the people climbing up ? 😮
Hi Jon.. very valuable experience & thanks for sharing. btw is milan sedlacek's body still near the top of lotshe? did you see it?
Looks like the airplane gully at Mount Washington.
How many people are driven crazy by the sound of crampons on rocks, but can't stop listening to it? ;)

Which climb was tougher in your opinion? I've heard some say Lhotse is harder.
Lhotse is quicker and easier I would say. Everest it longer and more involved and more technical too. Both are superb!
@@JonGupta Thanks for the reply man.
I started this video wondering which mountain you climbed first and then 30 seconds in I find out it’s the same trip up.
It’s quite common to do Everest and Lhotse as a double header one day after the other.
@@JonGupta Well I respect it. I’ve only ever climbed some of the 14ers here in the US and they were tough. Your fitness level is insane to do these 2 mountains and make it look casual.
Great video Jon! What camera do you use?
start small and you'll love it
which mountain you are climbing next?
Yo great content! what's that garmin watch model you use?
How old was you when you started climbing ?
Jon, how much does your pack weigh with O2, etc?
Plz!!! let me know what camera you used above 8000m?
All on GoPro
@@JonGupta How did you make your gopro work in that temp? Mine dead in about 6000m
im scared of heights. be cool to one day do this and conquer my fear.
Last few seconds of the video clearly shows why so many climbers have disappeared on 8000 ers due to poor visibility which can result in fall or get disoriented even when attached to fixed lines.
The weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, and this is where lots of prior experience can be very important.
You’re the best climber! Be safe!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Where did you buy your Expedition suit and what is the name of it
This one is the Montane 2 piece downsuit. It’s on their website 👍
🎥👍🎃👹 thank you happy Halloween Kansas City

That couloir looks pretty avalanchy, but i guess all other routes would be way too technical
Very surprised on these commercial trips that no one carries an ice axe, what if something happened to a fixed rope?
Perhaps it wasn’t obvious but I always carry one everyday just incase. So far it’s only ever been used to digging snow into a bag to melt for water!

Wonderful images. I despise that Sherpas do the dangerous work and often get killed fixing ropes etc. It’s not right.

Summit of Everest didn’t look so fun in that shot you got.
on the way down with 0 vision, you loose the rope, you loose the life…
U r lucky not to encounter avalanches

Anyone that uses oxygen has an asterisk by their achievement.
If you say so 👍
@@JonGupta oh, and ropes fixed by others that you just pull your way up. It's still pretty cool but it's not mountaineering.
@@dougdavis8986I dont get the antipathy against oxygen and ropes. Having some form of safety is not a bad thing and we should stop criticizing people using oxygen...
@VesseliiiiI oxygen lowers the perceived altitude to approximately 24,000 feet. So if you used oxygen you didn't climb an 8000 meter peak. It's like using an electric bike in the Tour de France.

Fantastic the final couloir! And the view of Everest as well. Thank you so much for sharing this video! Great achievement!
You’re welcome!
I remember reading Bear Grylls biopic which covered his summit of Mt. Everest in 1998. It seemed like such a massive ordeal and he made a big deal of the biological effects of entering the "death zone" and so it seemed it must surely take people a long time to recover from a summit. Is it just that you are such a better high altitude athlete than rank and file climbers, or have equipment climbing techniques improved so much since then--I guess what I am asking is, I was rather under the impression it takes people weeks to recover from a summit. How where you able to do two so quicky?
Hi Steve & Sarah,
Thanks for your comment and question, its a good one. I guess in short a lot has changed since 1998. Kit is better, but not drastically. Weather forecasting is better for sure. Logistics are always improving and there is more and more experienced guides and Sherpa on the mountain.
The main problem with anyone in the media or creating public content is it needs to sell, so they use buzz words like Death Zone etc. I understand the idea but it's a bit hyped. Being at 8000m is a big deal, but it doesn't have to be death defying and dramatic. I always say to my clients - we're here to enjoy climbing the mountain not just endure it.
As for me, I guess I must have a natural disposition to high altitude as i've always found I fared well. I have been climbing extensively at high altitude for 16 years and have guided on 12 x 8000m expeditions as well as over a 100+ other high altitude expeditions. If I make it look smooth and controlled thats a good thing as this is my job :)
Nower days many people do two or sometimes three summits back to back. Its not that uncommon for those that are very fit and acclimatise very well. You'll certainly be tired once you get down but if you keen the ball rolling, and the adrenaline going your body can achieve impressive things.
I hope that helps answer your questions a little bit,
Cheers!
@@JonGupta That was a very satisfying answer. Thank you very much for taking the time! Steve
"I always say to my clients - we're here to enjoy climbing the mountain not just endure it." I'll remember that one!

@@JonGupta Great

can you please make an overview of all the equipment that you took on everest
Hi Jon,what happens to the climbing ropes after the climbing season ends. Is it removed or discarded on the mountains.
Usually the seasons fixed lines are left on the mountain so the last people can get down safely. It also often helps the sherpa/teams fix the following year.
@@JonGupta oh, never knew the new season needs a new line, probably due to safety factors.
Good video and it's nice to see someone who isn't just fixated with Everest which is why it looks like a fairground attraction with so many people just waiting which is the reason for the latest fatalities on the Hilary step. I've seen your Makalu and K2 videos too, good stuff well done on your adventure and successful summits.
“Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you’re part of a team. Everything is awesome”
A little thank you to the Sherpas who put the ropes up to the summit would be appreciated,
1:08 imagine if you could put a fixed webcam right there? I’d watch it every day
Question, sorry if it's stupid! But do you have to get a separate license to climb this mountain and pay a fee like Everest?
King Meadow
My old Casio Protrek watch doesn't have to connect to gps to tell you the altitude. It gives accurate results based on atmospheric pressure almost instantly. Throw away that rubbish Garmin watch 😂
Great job Sir, Lukcy on having a lot of summits
You can hear just how cold it is with the squeaking snow.
It has to be no more than 18 or 20 F.
Views of Everest were surreal and very cool from that angle thanks for sharing. Also showed how fast the weather changes that high.
Thanks Michael. I agree - the views of Everest and incredible from the angle, it looks super impressive!
@@JonGupta Yeah. i asked my dad one time about Everest when we were out hunting and he said "We can't even handle 6,000 feet let alone 30,000 feet" and i said ....that's a good point.
