Just saw Slipknot in Daytona. Incredible show as always. They are a blueprint for creating music that will reach a broad audience. Business savvy, a bit controversial, heavy as hell yet rhythmic, complex AND meaningful lyrics. There's a reason they've stood the test of time.
Cant pretend that Slipknot didnt bow down to Road Runner and release singles toned down for radio. Spit it out, and My Plague had the vocals edited to be radio friendly. Then once Stone Sour became bigger, Slipknot also wrote plenty (too many) of radio friendly songs. They had a lot going for them in the beginning as far as image (masks), the mystique of no clear identities (still wish they couldve went further with that..oh, well) and the massive appeal at Ozzfest of being an unknown act blowing away even the main stage acts. At least Slipknot had the ability to pull in people for even heavier music. Not really my thing anymore, but their first two albums will always be faves. And obviously they still bring it live, so theres that.

Not to sound like an elitist but when people say they're a "metalhead" and you ask what's their favorite bands it's always like Pantera, Slipknot, Metallica, Slayer etc. I love all those bands but no one wants to dig the slightest bit deeper. When I was in hs I was always on the hunt for the fastest heaviest band I could find. If you watch interviews with the old heads of the 80s they hated Pantera... and some of them checked out of Metallica after Master of Puppets lol

Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, and Morbid Angel were the top selling acts in the 90's, does that equal "pop metal"? Metallica Master..is one of the most popular metal albums ever, is that pop metal? Theres nothing wrong with liking and maybe even ONLY liking Metallica, Slipknot, Pantera, or Slayer, or even the songs that are the most popular. Being a music fan is what matters. I listen to the blackest satanic black metal, the sludgiest Doom, The fastest death/black/deathcore ect. I ALSO listen to the most ridiculous radio pop music, whether its Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, ect. Or rap that i think is great that still grabs my attention, ALL music has its good and bad songs/artists. Relying on ANYONE elses opinion of music to justify your own is completely ridiculous.

Obviously still not on the level of say, Korn or something but it was more acceptable on the radio. Roadrunner definitely was probably in their ear to water it down a little. Like I said nothing wrong with that. I fall in the in between category where I know where the underground is but I enjoy all my commercial successful bands too. I've always said Slipknot was the heaviest band to ever get that much commercial appeal even with the S/T album. Side note it always bugged me they were called "nu metal". Slipknot was this weird death metal/industrial/experimental band that just happened to have a gimmick that grabbed attention. If it was 4 guys in black and long hair we probably would never have heard about them. Nu metal to me was like Korn or Coal Chamber or Limp Bizkit
I only liked the first two slipknot albums. Their third was okay but afterward, it was just a few to no songs per album. I've liked every AILD album because they don't gut their core sound while still adding to what they're able to do. So for me, comparing these two bands is like apples vs oranges.
‘Self Titled’ and ‘Iowa’ are timeless. Even though the second was a bit of a change it still stood up next to the first. Couldn’t stomach the rest iirc
By the way, his band sucked ass anyway. So all the toadies might have to leg it back to hot topic and find a new embarrassing band to dry hump on your much too young for you mall goth girlfriends.

The worst live band I saw I wanna say was bring me the horizon but fear before was up there. What I take away as the best and most underrated from that era of music, live, studio, songwriting all of it was sky eats airplane. WHY weren't they huge? They basically paved the way for periphery.
You obviously haven't heard that "singy songy" toned down version of Wait&Bleed the radio & MTV relentlessly played during Bush Jr's 1st term. I wonder, those people who heard that watered down version of Wait&Bleed on the radio back then, when they bought that album, were they disappointed when they realized they were lied to??🤔?? I can only imagine how disappointed they were when they heard that watered down version of My Plague, then bought Iowa only to find out they were lied to AGAIN😅😂 Why sign a band when you plan to soon airbrush & dilute & dumb down their sound?? Why not instead find or create that watered down band you wish was real??
As much of a gatekeeper and drama queen as Corey is, you'd think he could write just one song I care about or enjoy but nope. Never enjoyed a single slipknot song. At this point it's clear I never will.

I tried to listen to them again recently to try to see what everyone else sees but it's still just awful lyrics, boring guitars, and a series of drummers that are way too good to be in Slipknot.

Corey Taylors lyrics are so bad and pointlessly overdramatic that it would possibly even make Taylor Swift cringe lol
