Watched this video and replaced my 2003 Silverado handle. "Seeing" how it done and knowing what to expect helps give you the confidence to do the job. Thank you
Great video! I found that if you loosen the bolts holding the handle first, you can easily remove the bezel without breaking it. Same goes for installing the bezel. Start by installing the bolts loosely, then install the bezel, then tighten the bolts.
@1aauto Your one of the first channels that had good information we could use for the MustangMedic Truck. Found out our back handel cowling was glued on too. Just like your video..
good instructional video. i work work at a dealer and do r&r tailgate handles all the time. but one thing i have learned, lube is not always a good thing, because it attracts dirt and debris which can cause the moving parts to bind and seize. have had to take a torch to a few tailgate handle pivots and burn off all the crap and lube in order to get them to move. most of the time i replace them, but some people don't want to go that route.
This video was very, very helpful. I am an avid DIY'er and this video will help me save money by replacing it myself. Step by step. I will add this to my "favorite's as I do have other thing's I was afraid to tackle. With your help here I feel confident I can now handle the job myself. Thank you
I have suffered a messed up handle for years. I thought it would be too expensive to pay to have replaced and I knew I couldn't do it. And then I got tired of cutting my hands on the broken plastic and went for it. Didn't have a clue what I was doing - your video made all the difference. Thanks!!

sir i have a 78 chevy and i have been fixing it up from the steering hoses to the windows panels tailgate and all and if i had a problem i went to youtube and went to 1A Auto and i dont want to sound like im advertising for ya but you sure did help me out alot on my truck and i thank you keep up the good work on the videos.

Looks easy. Thanks for sharing. My handle on my 2000 Silverado broke 2 years ago. I just got mine from Amazon. I will check your store next time I need a part.
Great video on the A/C resistor replacement. As you noted in the video pressing the "spring clip" to disconnect the resistor from the blower motor was a bear - even after I loosened the front of the blower motor cover...but then I looked throw the front of the cover and could see the connection in the 10 O'clock position -- all it took was a flat head screw driver to push the clip in front the loosened front cover and the connection popped right out......no killing your fingers trying to press the "spring clip" to get the connector to release.
@clossalazar They attach to the bottom of the door handle hinge. You can see where we disconnect them from at the beginning of the video. Hope this helps you out.
Good info. in the video but for future videos, would you please be more aware of your camera placement as you blocked a lot of what you were doing with your body and we are trying to watch what you are doing as well as listening to you. Thanks!
We currently don't have a video that shows this repair. You may have to check for bolts that you may need to remove under the tailgate handle, or there may possibly be some type of access panel on the inside of the tailgate. If you absolutely can't figure it out. Go to 67-72chevytrucks com and create a post, some of the members will help you. Tell them 1aauto.com sent yah. Hope this helps you out.
When you pulled the broken handle off you had to remove what appeared to be two (red?) Plastic keepers holding the rods in place. Is that right? Does the new handle come with those keepers? I couldn't tell. Thanks for the excellent how to
I have an issue where my rods simply fell of the hook. I was hoping to see how you placed them back in there needed position but i wasn't able to see that due to the angle of the camera.
I got an 05' GMC Sierra giving me 2 codes. P0054 and P0060. When I unplug both sensor 2's on bank 1 and 2, the truck starts and runs. But when plug them back in, the truck starts and then dies soon after. Please help! I've gotten down from 10 codes down to these last 2, would love to be able to drive my truck again. Been almost 2 months without it. Thank you in advance and please keep making these great videos
Working on this right now. I've installed New left/right latches and just installed the handle but the tail gate is still not locking into place. Do the rods have to be lined up to a certain spot on the clips inside the handle?
I have an '03 Sierra that the tailgate won't stay shut sometimes on. I have to slam it multiple times in order for it to latch. Will replacing the tailgate handle fix this problem or is there a simpler way?
I have a 1995 GMC Suburban with two "barn doors" for a tailgate. The latch mechanism in the left door is broken. Do you have a video about how to repair it and the parts to do so? The broken piece is the piece that moves both wires to release the top and bottom latches when you pull on the handle that is revealed when the right door is open. Seems like a few plastic parts have split...
How do the rods attach to the clips. I'm afraid that they will break because they seem cheap. I can't see how you attached them because your hands are in the way. Thank you for the video.
They should remove those three bolts & washers before spraying the Rhino lining. Then after the rubberized Rhino lining stuff has cured for a bit, file out the excess from the edges of the holes with a round file, before putting the bolts & washers back on. This eliminates the problem you dealt with at the beginning.
what was wrong with the handle that it needed to be replaced? details please. I don't follow when the description says broken or snapped...whats broken? what snapped? im looking to fix my truck tailgate as I can not open it. the handle pulls up but it feels like its not attached to anything. now I haven't taken it off yet that's why im on here I didn't know how to take the cover off. other videos show the bar might have come out of it. that's what it seems to me but ill have to get that plate off. I need to get it fix fast as I use the truck for work so I hope there are places around here to get what I need as I can not wait a few days for it to be delivered.
Hi, great video. My handle lifts up but nothing happens. i can see that the green clip has no rod attached to it . so is the handle actually broken? how do i tell? thank you Mike
The rod should be attached to the door handle. You may want to inspect the handle to see if it's broke. If you need a replacement door handle we carry them on our website for all kinds for different vehicles. 1aauto.com
that tailgate was obviously repainted at one point, whoever removed the bezel probably broke it and you can see the overspray all over the old handle..

so what do I do if the new one I have is a bi bigger on the outside like the part that surrounds the handle. the push clips don't line up. can I make new holes ?

You can also use a pair of pliers to pinch together the two rods and it will open. Mine had a tonneau cover and I used a large pair of pliers to pull the two rods together and it popped open.

Grinder with wire brush will help cleaning the bolts
Thank you so much. I have a problem with my 2003 silvarado. will see what is going on today. !
If the truck has a pain on bed liner as shown in the video, you would need to trim it away so that you can get a socket on the bolt.

@ezskanken You may want to fix what the code's pointing to. It sounds like there may be an issue with the H02S sensor.

Aaaand I promptly snapped the little upper retainers for the bezel. Nuts.

Unfortunately normally those clips come with the handle itself and is not sold separately.
What type lubricant did you spray on the moving parts?
Loved the video!! It helped a ton.
It's white lithium grease. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
@@1AAuto How would it be if I wanna add one that has the lock on it?
lol showing how to get bezel off **stands in front of the camera**
you can not see where you put the rods on the latch and that is what I am having trouble with
Hey what kind of lubricant did you use? Great video BTW, thanks!
It looked like white lithium grease.

I have a 03' Chevy 1500. If my tailgate won't open (I don't have the keys, bought it used), will replacing the Tailgate handle fix that problem.

Thanks for the great vid!
What is the plastic piece thats on the rod that connects to the handle?
I believe it's called a "door rod lock clip"
Thank you!
tailgate handle latch clips. GM is the only company that sells them
Those are the clips
Okay u said to cut around the bolts so u can put ur wrench on it, and then u used a socket!
do you have a locking version of this handle that will fit the 2006 GMC Sierra?

a better camera angle and the understanding the camera can't see through you as you stand in front of it.
what about the door handle, i cant find a video on this?
