Watch a full tutorial as a 2002 GMC Sierra / Chevy Silverado will have a new tailgate backup camera installed to a previously installed double din touch screen. This camera is installed in the tailgate bezel for an OEM type look for an aftermarket radio.
NOTE: 1999 - 2002 models does not have a canbus data system, so the reverse trigger will have to be pulled from the reverse light positive wire with use of the purple wire in the camera harness. For years 2003 - 2006, when replacing the radio, a smart harness is required, and generally a smart harness will provide a reverse trigger wire for your radio; thus the purple on the camera harness will not be needed.

Thank you for the video. I am doing a camera on my 98 Silverado. This video was helpful because I was searching for good ways to get from the cab down to the frame rail. Using the rubber grommet for the parking brake was a great idea vs. drilling a large hole in my firewall. Thanks again!

Thanks very much! I hope to do this someday to my 2005 base model single cab Silverado. I’m adding one nice option at a time. The only thing I’ll need that’s not OEM, is the radio and backup camera. I like this one more than the license plate version. It looks cleaner and more OEM.
You must be a teacher at a tech school. You are very understandable and don’t speak too fast, and provide the extra information you think is important, on the screen. This goes for every other video from your channel. Thanks again.

I think you do a very good job with the videos. One think that came to my mind, I have a 2006 and have had to pull the bed twice for fuel pump issues. If anyone installs this system, make sure a service shop knows there is another wire to deal with so they can not remove the bed to service fuel pump. I’ll be putting a weather protected plug at back that can be unplugged when removing the bed.

Got an 05 avalanche and I'm having some trouble. Some folks said you have to tap into the reverse trigger wire in the black box for them but my head unit has a reverse positive. Guess I actually need to use the reverse trigger instead?
Edit: You'll have a reverse + on your head unit which you also need to jump into with the same camera power wire that connects to your reverse lamp. You're using the power from your reverse lights to turn on the camera, then when the camera gets that power you also have to send the signal to your head unit which works via the reverse + cable. It's obvious once you realize that but otherwise wasn't clear at all.

So I have an '03, with the smart harness. Head unit is in, but I was rushed to get back on the road, so I didn't put the backup camera on yet. Planning to do that this weekend. I have power and ground at the head unit of the camera harness, and power and ground at the rear of the truck. The smart harness in the truck knows when it's in reverse, so can I just hook up the power to the reverse light and not use the power and ground at the head unit? An "Either Or" kinda thing? Thanks in advance!

Connect power and ground of the camera to the power and ground wire of the reverse light. Small pigtail red wire on the RCA end connects to the reverse trigger wire of the radio. RCA end goes into the camera input of the radio.

    • @ProvoBeastAudio

Yes - but most units today run nav from apple carplay / android auto. Native nav on a unit is harder to come by, either in overpriced brand name units, or cheap no-name units.
