I am Portuguese and let me tell you, that repairman is so so Portuguese.... the switching between french and portuguese, the attitude towards the problem: "what can we do? Nada...", not being there on time.... this is was just hilariously on point
Tried, the law doesn't let u if the landlord shows evidence (either phone log/email/sms) if he/she already tried calling the repairman. But savage idea which could be used for other countries ;)

Just FYI for those who r wondering why Damon always takes so long to fix a local Parisian problem; Donc, buildings in france is normally insured so if something broken you (or your landlord) just have to call the building manager/syndic to call the repairman. Most of the time you don't have to pay/paid by your insurance. So since these service is "free" they don't serve you properly and have a longgg waiting list. Yes you can call your own repairman but it's ridiculously expensive. Like to change a lock for example cost 2000+€. Fixing simple water pipe could cost 8000+€. I guess that's why I became more handy for bricolage since I moved to Paris haha.

Hands down the biggest culture shock of moving to Europe is how landlords and the fixing of broken things in your apartment goes. Not that America is in any means perfect when it comes to having landlords that help out, but it's definitely more of an expectation that when you rent, if something breaks, your landlord/repairman is under obligation to fix it ASAP. Europeans also seem to be way more lax and not prioritize fixing things lmao. Very glad I'm handy and can just do most things myself without waiting around. Glad you finally got your door fixed!

I had another leak in the heater system yesterday and I waited the entire day for an emergency. The guy showed up at 21:30 after a whole day without water and heat! Of course I went through the whole talk to the voice mail the entire day. I just can’t.
I live in a rather old house in Vence, 21km from the Nice airport. I recently almost pulled all my hair and teeth out trying to get a small fountain installed in a wall of my garden. Nobody ever showed up on time, nobody ever seemed to have the right tools, and nobody ever thought it would be good to actually finish the job. On the other hand, nobody ever needed to use my i-phone charger. Thank goodness I once lived in southern Spain where the concept of 'manana, manana' was born. At least you somehow manage to find the humor in all this.

We have a massive storage of all the pieces that were broken, for tools, screws Anything and everything you could imagine to repair a house from A to Z. The selfreliance practices in north Africa are life savers .

(my roommates and i have tried to no avail to get someone to look at our radiators for ALMOST THREE YEARS!!! every winter we start calling and by the time it looks like someone's going to show up, spring is here again.)

Spent ages in a previous flat with a broken shower because the letting agents said it was the building's problem and the building said it was the landlord's problem....two months of baths later and we moved out before it ever got fixed. As far as I know that damn shower is still broken
OMG, this video took me back to the times I lived in Portugal during my Erasmus. I lived in a house with another 12 people, so you can imagine the state of the house. 😂 Our landlord did the same thing and sometimes even forgot to pay for the gas and electricity, so we spent a few days carrying water from the library across the street and having COLD showers. What an adventure! 😂
Here in California the HOA took 5 months to fix a window leakage!!! I wrote to them weekly and phoned them, no response then finally after I said angry things they responded but proceeded to not show up. Finally today the repairman came!
Sometimes we forget how good we have it in India for little things like these. We get EVERYTHING done the same day, you go visit any hardware or electrician store, tell your problem, they send you the guy and he fixes it. No hazzle. This looked like a nightmare. Cheers to Damon for his struggles💫

As a Parisian, I’m used to things taking a looooong time to be fixed, bad customer service (repairmen showing up late, never calling back...), landlords who don’t do shit unless you threaten to not pay the rent...it’s like, a normal day in Paris (and to a lesser extent, in France). This is so interesting to have an outsider’s perspective on that matter, It makes you realise that it might not be so normal after all 🤔.
My husband and I still laugh about the first time we were in France and we were waiting on a train and the counter guy said it was two hours delayed, come back in two hours. So we came back in two hours and he was like “oh, it’s two hours delayed, come back in two hours” and we were like, “you said that last time, so where’s the train now.” And he just looked at us with the most deadpanned “this is not my problem” look everrrr I laugh about it to this day. 😂

This is a new normal for renters-so: you inform the owner/landlord+deadline, depending the repairment. If he/she can't solve it, you pay and you cut the amount of payment for the repairment from the rent deposit/transfer.

Damon... you need to move. I know finding a place to rent in Paris was a saga in itself, but that was absolutely outrageous treatment from both the repairman and your landlord
This is a new normal for renters-so: you inform the owner/landlord+deadline, depending the repairment.
If he/she can't solve it, you pay and you cut the amount of payment for the repairment from the rent deposit/transfer.
