  • As the teachings of the Protestant Reformation spread throughout Europe, Protestant movements appeared in many different countries. In several nations, the Reformation was eventually suppressed by relentless persecution. However, persecution was not always able to extinguish the Protestant cause. In this message, W. Robert Godfrey explains how the Reformation took root in Scotland in spite of government opposition, largely through the diligent and persistent ministry of John Knox.

Single minded devotion to Christ seems to run in Knox's family. His youngest daughter, as Mrs Welsh, asked King James for the release of her husband from prison (he had resisted the king's demand to submit to James as the head of the Church of Scotland). The king answered that he would release her husband on condition that he submit to the king's demand. Mrs Welsh reportedly replied, “Please, your majesty, I would rather keep his head here!” referring to her husband's head rolling from the axeman’s block into her apron.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The intrigue, the drama, the scandals...
    nothing new under the sun...
