The NCAA handed down sanction today against the official and reprimanded them for mishandling the end of this game. Stavy DOES take a knee, then he straightens up a bit and then puts the ball down but the play is dead when his left knee touched. The announcers even said that ASU should have been penalized for delay of game. The refs blew it and the NCAA agreed on that.....that's the bottom line...the refs totally mishandled this.
A penalty for laying on what you think might be a fumble , not a chance . The qb is the one that made this all possible because instead of taking a proper knee he put a ton of doubt in a lot of peoples minds as to whether he ever touched the ground with his knee . Now instead of being up at the line of scrimmage exhorting the official to make the ball ready for play he is back explaining to the referee that his ugly knee play really was not a fumble . They left themselves open for human error .
Going along with their first missed call yes. But it was a fumble and who knows who blew the whistle. If you look the ref on the left side of the screen said his knee was down and the Ump was looking for confirmation. In my opinion the play should have been reviewed.
No confusion by the QB. Stave downed the ball in the middle of the hashes to center the ensuing field goal attempt. The 2nd down play would have been a spike to stop the clock and then the 3rd down would have been the FG attempt. This was technically bungled by the officials, but Stave probably shouldn't have left the ball on the turf.
Looking at a zoomed in picture somebody else created I actually agree his knee was down. However, he should have known the time would run when you kneel down in-bounds. The Wisc. team looked like they didn't care that time was running down. That's on the QB.
True. I was at the game and it just looked like he was confused, especially after he got hit by his lineman. Now that I've watched it a couple more times it looks like he didn't know what to do with the ball after the knee, like you said. Also, don't know if this is what he was supposed to do, but doesn't he have to notify the ref's about taking a knee? I'm pretty sure that's the rule in High School, just not sure about College.
ahh not wat i have seen if u zoom in it shows that his knee not on the ground and it shows that he didn't put the football down it shows the football out of hand before it hit the ground so technically that it was an incomplete pass
Refs should have reset the clock to 8 seconds and resumed play on whistle. Glad the officials gotta in trouble hopefully fired for obvious mistake that changed potential outcome of the game
Nah, the ref was spotting the ball, and telling Wisconsin to hold on until he spots the ball then he can spike the ball. But the time ran out, it's the refs fault and you can't end a game like that. That shit is wrong!!!
Problem is, the QB should have thrown the ball down. He clearly was confused about the play. If you watch him he just wanders off to the left....what's that all about?
No the Wisky qb's bad technique caused the whole problem . Because he did not use proper technique he caused confusion and then instead of him being able to hand the ball right to the official if he did it the right way the ball is on the ground with ASU players diving on it and the qb because of the way he tried to take the so called knee which I don't see now has to plead his case to the referee instead of being up at the line of scrimmage exhorting the official to make the ball ready .
He did that just to make sure the ref knew he was taking a knee so they could spot the ball and they could spike it. Then the ASU player jumps on the ball confusing the ref, that's the refs fault. They screwed Wisconsin
Not a Wisconsin fan at all. But this is on the refs for sure. The clock is running, yet the ASU players have piled on top of the ball and the ref is holding his hand out to stop Wisconsin from running a play. Really bad officiating. Wisconsin was being smart by using its plays to put its field goal kicker in the best position to win. But when the refs let the other team dive on a ball, and then can't spot the ball properly, smart moves look bad.
ASU didnt cheat, they did what they are coached to do. Fall on a loose ball. It was a fumble according to the rulebooks. The ref missed that one. He probably only blew his whistle because he was expecting Stave to take a knee. Lazy ref
Thats where the refs made their fault. Not, not seeing if the knee was down or not. And then it was Stave's fault for being not getting his team lined up
How is that no a fumble? Regardless of the refs not spotting the ball, when you literally put the ball on the ground, after having possession, without being "down," then that's a live ball. Should have been ASUs ball to kneel. Wisconsin only has their QB to blame. Spike the fucking ball the first time and you win the game.
The guy took a knee and gave himself up. And the refs are just standing there not spotting the ball. Wisconsin can't spike the ball until the refs spot the ball. The refs didn't spot the ball, therefore the time ran out. These NCAA refs are awful, did anybody see that Texas Tech game on Thursday? They are controlling some of these games and it's annoying and it ain't right.
It is not clear with the human eye . You would have to blow that up to see . My reaction everytime I see it is that he did not take a knee . What is the difference the quarterback instead of being up at the line screaming for the ball to be made ready is back explain to the refs how his awful technique knee really was not a fumble .
none of what your saying is cheating . A man laying on a ball that he might think is a fumble is smart football . What is he supposed to do jump up and hand the ball to the ref . Qb blew this game because of his lousy take a knee technique that caused confusion and made him waste valuable seconds trying to explain to the ref that it was a knee instead of being up at the line of scrimmage exhorting the official to make the ball ready for play . If qb is where he should have been all is good .
His left knee was DOWN before he put the ball down...play is dead there. Just because he did not HAND THE BALL to the refs does not make him wrong. The refs should have taken the ball and spotted it. This play should have been reviwed and time added to the clock. THE BOTTOM LINE: These refs were reprimanded by the NCAA after reviewing this and sanctions were leveled against this crew.....are you telling me the NCAA officials who reviewed this were wrong as well?
looks like nothing more than stupid play by Wisconsin. D U M B. Just kick the field goal and win the game. Refs had nothing to do with that final play. Poor coaching and poor quarterback play.
Don't worry Wisconsin. BYU had these same refs at the Utah game this year. We understand how bad and crooked the PAC-12 refs are. Too bad they can't use their own refs in a title game against a way better Florida State or Alabama. PAC-12 is trash. When there is a playoff next year NO ONE will be talking about the CRAP-12.
still dont see that is ASU cheating. If Stave knew how to actually take a knee and not fumble it then an ASU player was laying on the ball then yes. Understand the confusion you must see when a player just sees a Qb set the ball in the middle of the field. Its like when an actually fumble happens and a player scooped it up and ran down the field. Never a delay of game penalty when that happens.
Here is where the problem lies . The wisky quarterback that took a knee that certainly to me never hit the ground then wastes 4 seconds explaining to the ref tha the did take a knee while the smart ASU players were diving on an apparent fumble . Instead of conversing with the ref he should have been up at the line of scrimmage exhorting for the ball to be made ready for play . His terrible technique coupled with him having to plead his case because of his bad technique caused it all .
Okay, question to all the people who say Wisconsin got screwed. Why didn't the QB just throw the ball away? I'm guessing there's SOMEWHERE he could have thrown it where it be incomplete and not intentional grounding. An incomplete would have stopped the clock and not lost any yards, and it was First and 10 anyway..... On that note, why not have just kicked the field goal? It's a what? 33 yarder? and only have given Arizona maybe 12-14 seconds to work with after the kickoff to try something. Unless Wisconsin's defense are made of idiots, it should have been able to hold.
Because then the ball would still be spotted on the edge of the hashmarks. Stave put the ball into the middle of the field to set up the field goal. What you are saying is beside the point. It's not relevant to why they got screwed.
The problem is that Stave barely touched the ground with his knee at the same time he ran into his own lineman. It didn't look like he was downing the ball and then he put the ball on the ground BEFORE the whistle was blown. A ball on the ground looks like a live ball to a defense that wants it to be a live ball. Whistle was blown, ball was covered pretty quickly and there is still no reason to stop the clock. The offense is standing around and doesn't look to be in much of a hurry until after the ball is placed by the official with :04 on the clock and the offense never gets set before :00 on the clock. Game over. Wisconsin screwed themselves. They could have just kicked a 30ish yard FG for the win but decided to get cute and forgot about the rules of football.
+Beard Star it's called "giving yourself up". The knee down isn't even relevant look up the rule. Not only that, the refs blew the whistle and that fat somoan layed on the ball.
The NCAA handed down sanction today against the official and reprimanded them for mishandling the end of this game. knee didn't touch, even announcers said he didn't take a knee. He didn't "give himself up" he gave the game up...
You cant tell if the knee is actually touching from this angle.

ahh not wat i have seen if u zoom in it shows that his knee not on the ground and it shows that he didn't put the football down it shows the football out of hand before it hit the ground so technically that it was an incomplete pass
Even if he did kneel, which I don't believe he did, he did it in bounds. Of course the time is going to run.
His knee was down, I just saw a picture that shows it
And what would that matter? ASU wins with the ball in their possession because their QB actually knows how to take a knee.
That's a fumble then . It cant be a pass because there is no throwing attempt .
the wisconsin qb's reaction was fucking hilarious
His knee WAS down. Leaving link for proof in description
plus it was a penalty too by ASU for sitting on the ball
no its not i zoomed it in his knee was NOT ON THE GROUND
They were just waiting for the fake injury guy to get off the field when ASU was relentlessly moving the ball
Not a distraction because if UW did spike the ball and kicked the field goal, then the refs would have cheated out ASU in missing a fumble call.
Refs should have reset the clock to 8 seconds and resumed play on whistle. Glad the officials gotta in trouble hopefully fired for obvious mistake that changed potential outcome of the game

no reason a ball should take that long to get set.
How can you see his knee was down when the picture wasnt ground level?
He blew the whistle after he puts the ball down
No the Wisky qb's bad technique caused the whole problem . Because he did not use proper technique he caused confusion and then instead of him being able to hand the ball right to the official if he did it the right way the ball is on the ground with ASU players diving on it and the qb because of the way he tried to take the so called knee which I don't see now has to plead his case to the referee instead of being up at the line of scrimmage exhorting the official to make the ball ready .
absolutely criminal.
go to @ATLgettinpaper and you'll see it in the 1st tweet that the picture shows the QB's knee is clearly down. It's a twitter address
Ball on ground = knee down in college. Learn the rules. The ending was Cowboyesque…
He did that just to make sure the ref knew he was taking a knee so they could spot the ball and they could spike it. Then the ASU player jumps on the ball confusing the ref, that's the refs fault. They screwed Wisconsin

The only argument you should bring forth is a delay of game penalty against the defense. Nothing else. LEARN FOOTBALL

I just saw a picture that clearly shows that the Wisconsin's QB knee being down. No question about it. The refs robbed Wisconsin of a win.
How? was it from the endzone? or this disputable one left in the link?
It is not clear with the human eye . You would have to blow that up to see . My reaction everytime I see it is that he did not take a knee . Because thats what is going through a players mind. And im explaining to you that is not cheating. You know, cause you asked.
lol the refs fucked us there, neither team was at fault, and Stave did kneel. As a Packer fan I am sick of refs losing control of games -.-
KNEE WAS NOT DOWN , BADGERS SUCK ANYWAY , GO CARDS !
