  • This short series is designed for completely new players of Rule the Waves to get up to speed quickly with the basics of the game and be able to confidently play with their own fleet.
    It features a small sized fleet of a medium naval power (France). It starts in 1890, when technology is at its simplest. And aims to get you skilled at:
    - Managing your navy
    - Thinking about your strategic position
    - Designing new ships
    - Responding to political developments
    - Winning gun battles with Ironclad and Pre-Dreadnought warships
    - Using (and avoiding) torpedoes successfully
    - Picking your battles and winning your wars

    Hi Dickie. Ty for putting this tutorial series together. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have picked up on a lot of the game’s nuances from just reading the manual and fumbling along in a few play throughs. It certainly looks like a game I can get lost in for many months or even years. I’m looking forward to viewing the rest of the tutorials in the series. 👍

    I really appreciate what your doing with this mini series, I was looking at buying the game but wanted to know what Im getting myself into before hand. Many a time I have spent money on a game before understanding basic mechanics and have ended up disgruntled and overwhelmed when I do play. Im looking forward to watching your whole series and then when I feel confident enough I will spend the 40 dollars to start playing.

    At 27:58 the most fun I have in a peace time navy is during a fleet exercise. Train ship crews, and me self too, due tactical fleet manoeuvres in a mock battle. That is what a fleet exercise is the game, a mock battle against a part of your own navy playing in the fleet exercise the role of hostile naval units. My first fleet exercise that took place was with the French navy about 100 km west of Brest (Brittany) in December 1890. Such mock battles in the game looks and goes exactly the same as real battles with one difference, at the end all participating ships come home safely, including all ships that were simulated to be damaged or even sunk. A fleet exercise costs money but that are the only costs you have, it don't harm any participating ships. A mock battle is i.m.o. a save method to test in practice the strengths and weaknesses of your existing ships against each other.

    • @RvTWargames
      @RvTWargames  24 дня назад

      The other crucial advantage of an exercise is that it raises crew quality, which is vital if you have had your ships on mothballs or reserve.

    This is an excellent video, looking forward to watching the rest! But, when I ordered the two cruisers built like you did, my budget went into an immediate nosedive and by July of 1890 I got dismissed. Perhaps I shouldn't have built that many since my fleet is always different than the one in the video or I just should've ignored that instruction entirely. What do you think? Edit: If it matters at all I had fleet size set to "Very Small."

    • @RvTWargames

      Usually I would let the game allocate commanders automatically. Promoting and dismissing officers costs prestige, which you don't have a lot of at the start.
      If the game allocated a complete duffer to my flagship I would change it. But otherwise I would let it go.

    • @RvTWargames
      @RvTWargames  Год назад +5

      For a really evocative read, if you want a sense of the people involved and the smell of salt coming off the waves, I would recommend Robert K. Massie.
      Both his Dreadnought: Britain, Germany and the Coming of the Great , and the follow on Castles of Steel really give a strong flavour of the arms face before and the operations during the Great War.
      If you have a more engineering bent, then David K Brown is your man.
      Warrior to Dreadnought: Warship Design and Development 1860-1905 will take through the early stuff.
      The Grand Fleet: Warship Design and Development 1906-1922 takes you through the Great War.
      Nelson to Vanguard: Warship Design and Development, 1923-1945 takes you through the interwar and Second World War.
      Rebuilding the Royal Navy: Warship Design Since 1945 covers post war.
      His works are Royal Navy centric, but then the Royal Navy is core to this story.
      Finally, if you want to deep dive into a particular type of ship or naval topic, you can never go wrong with the works of Norman Friedman.
      I'm currently enjoying his Network Centric Warfare as a particularly interesting take on how fleets were commanded, but all his stuff is authoritative.
      Finally, get yourself to your local bookshop and have a nose around and see what sparks your interest. There are so many great books being published.
      Enjoy!

      Yes, you need the conversation tech, and no seaplane tenders will not speed this process up. Though doing the carrier conversion is essential for developing further carriers. Or put the other way, you can't avoid the ungainly conversions and just wait until you can build 'proper' carriers.

    How do you determine what your fleet should be? I noticed you put all your BB in one fleet and i was wondering why

    • @RvTWargames
      @RvTWargames  Год назад

      The game forces you into certain formations - a battle fleet, a scouting force (optional on the doctrine screen) - a certain roles (core, support, screen, scout, independent). In addition, RtW3 allows you to organise forces by divisions. This lets you put similar types of warships (battleships, battlecruisers, heavy cruisers, etc) into divisions that should appear together. It's best that they have the same capability too - particularly speed.
      That way I can be more confident that battle fleet will be concentrated and more easy to manoeuvre at the same speeds, while ships I need sometimes (eg DDs for a torpedo attack) can go into support, while cruisers become scouts, and so on. The battle generator will always muck around with this a bit - you don't have complete control - but at least you get to shape how you'd ideally like your navy to fight.
