    Using FreeCAD 0.21.2, I had to right click the sketch and select "Attachment editor" to get it to attach to the face from the selection. It's a bit different to what you show, but the principle is the same.

    Just a heads up for anyone else following this tutorial. I came across a small bug when trying to move the previous tutorials sketch to the appropriate face. When you click on the face, the 'sub window' (16:34 in the video) that you are meant to click OK on, disappears. It is sent behind the main FreeCad window so you need to bring it back to the front (or reactivate it). Hope this is helpful.
    I am using MacOS 10.15.7 and FreeCad 0.19-24291
    Awesome tutorials by the way, very well laid out.

    There is a lot of information packed in to this tutorial. Tracing is a powerful feature and watching just once for a beginner is not enough, Thankfully we can go back and pickup an important step that was previously missed. How to manipulate a plane is a mind game, this is well explained and can be revisited. I have 4 images to trace in my model, the planes, measurements, and scale are critical. Learnt so much in this tutorial, thank you.

      Thank you for the feedback, so glad this video has been well received. Its been a long time in the making. I first started the video in 0.18 but decided I would do a single plane first as I wasn't happy with my delivery. I then attempted it again but a computer crash resulted in the loss of the video files, finally I have got this to video and though I wish it was a bit shorter I think I covered most things. Glad you like and thank you for the constructive comments.

    I could not make the Attachment>Support>... method on the Data tab work as per the tutorial.
    For me the easiest thing was to right-click on the Sketch item in the Combo View, choose Attachment Editor, then with the first input labelled "Selecting..." just click on the correct face to attach it (or if the first button was labelled "Plane" then click that button first).

Also @10:58 when you changed the image and view to "Rear", my "line" (the sketch just finished on the first part of the video) was off in the image on the Y axis, so I used "Transform" to align it to the image. There are, however, some basic learning blocks I keep messing up. Its often as simple as attaching a sketch to a certain face and extruding correctly. It might be more helpful to introduce these concepts building simple models: a hollow cube with 10 mm walls (sticking different faces, maybe mirror parts of it?) or a more challenging hollow pyramid?

    I feel like I'm catching on really fast. I have never modeled using constraints before but it all immediately makes so much sense. you've done a fantastic job with these tutorials, and I'm enjoying following along so far.
    although this one I hit a snag, maybe because I'm using the ondsel es fork of freecad, or that it's just based on a newer version of freecad in general, but the old sketch, attached to the face of that other pad, would not pad itself, and would return as causing more than one body... I even tried redoing the sketch starting the sketch on that face like normal, but then a similar issue occurred... I'm not sure what's up with it. but I understand all the principles, and am unable to recreate the issue with anything else for some reason. we'll see how it goes, I guess

Click on the Plane button and now select the right face on the model. The text area will change to Pad0001:Face9. So far your tutorials have been smooth sailing, but Lesson 5.2 is making me crazy trying to get the scaling on the Base View right.
    I've set the scale using the ruler within the image at 140 mm (141.2 mm as measured by the ruler) well within expectations as it's difficult to know exactly where to click while scaling. The diameter of the large hole measures 6.67 mm, far too large, while the smaller hole measured 4.11 mm, again within expectations.
    I've started over more than once (or twice!). Can you explain what's going on?

    • @leroycasterline1122
      @leroycasterline1122 Год назад +1

      Never mind! Operator (parallax) issue. Lesson: sketching an image won't be as accurate as one might think - actual and accurate measurements of the object itself are necessary.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад +1

      This lesson I should of really left further on in the series. Its a hard one to do and getting this far you did pretty well. Sketching from reference images can be hard to get the scaling right especially with multiple images. It can get you in the "ball park". But for building models it's always best to have the true dimensions.

    @marinajonxis2393 Год назад +1

    Do I understand this right? At about 16 minutes you add the sketch of the object you made in part 1. You work in the part workbench. So could you add the 2 objects and blend it with a boolean operation? In part design workbench you have to work with 1 object and have to use the sketch and pad this? In part workbench you can do this 2 ways? (or even more).
    Thanks so much again you do an amazing job.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад

      The part workbench is extremely flexible as the boolean operation is left up to you. With part design the workbench automatically adds the boolean between the previous operation and the new operation. This is why you can't have multiple bodies. Though the part design workbench is quicker because of this automatic boolean it makes it less flexible where as the part workbench is slower to work through as you have to perform the boolean yourself. This means you can as you say create two or more operations and blend them together with a single boolean and it opens up many different ways to create the same object. Glad your enjoying the videos 😊👍

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад

      Don't worry, a normal question that one. Sounds like you had it attached / mapped to something. If you see attachment appear before placement in your data tab then it is attached so you would edit the XYZ of the attachment which can get confusing as it's now in local 3d space rather than global. If placement appears first in the list then it's not attached so you edit the XYZ of placement. If attached placement becomes read only. If you want to learn about local and global coordinate systems then I have a video that covers that and should help :)

    At about 13:41 when I add the sketch it asks for the plane to attach it to. I don't see this dialog come up in the video. After that I am also unable to pad my sketch after creating it. I was able to do this about a year ago, but maybe updating to .20.2 makes things work just a little bit differently. I'm currently stuck, trying to get the sketch to pad.

      I kept trying. Suddenly it just worked. I did not get the dialog asking what plane to attach it to, and everything flowed after that. Must be something about the view when I click to add the sketch. Randomly I did something right. I guess in time I will learn enough to understand what I was doing wrong.

    When I do the second sketch before attaching the polar pattern, I find the object which I just sketched and created using pad in the XY axis and the XZ axis in which the second sketch appears are separated. So I cannot use pad as it creates multiple solids. Then I tried to draw the rectangle in the XY axis and found that I cannot attach the rectangle at the bottom points of the object. The software only lets me put construction geometry at the top points of the object, not at the bottom points. Can you please help?

    Hey, Mango. I've been stuck at 14:36 for about two nights now and I can't seem to make it happen. I try to select the points, but the program defaults to selecting the lines and not the points. It's driving me nuts. Any ideas on how to help?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  Год назад

      I think I know exactly what is happening. It sounds like you are on the reverse side of the sketch where points are harder to get to add the lines are in the way, you need to add a bit of an angle to your view point, where you can get around to the other side. In the newer versions of freecad this has been resolved and you can get to the sketch points from both sides. Also in the properties of the sketch there is a reverse option (or its called something different). Which food the sketch over. Normally it's made by a mistake you made in mapping the sketch, I have done it a few times before especially when I started out but I have never taken note of why it happens. Next time I must make sure I take note.

    • @nikitabobrov9807

      You probably did nothing wrong and the problem is with the tool itself. FreeCAD is in active development, so there are plenty of functionality that can be changed or moved from version to version. For anyone who encountered "recompute failed" error during 16:17 section I'd advise to try the following: click on the Sketch we want to place on the Pad -> in the Attachment section click three dots on the Support field, Clear the links as the author did in the video, click OK -> go to the MapMode field in the Attachment section, click on three dots next to FlatFace value and a new window will pop up -> you will see "Selecting..." button active, meaning we can choose the Pad surface. Do not click on "Selecting..." button, just choose the Pad surface. Tested on Fedora 39, FreeCAD 0.21.2.

    Playing around with fillets, I found I couldn't apply a fillet to the frontmost outside edge of the socket (the bit we created by mirroring/padding). I had no problems filleting the outside edge where it connected to the front plate. I was also able to fillet the frontmost inside edge.
    Looking online I found a suggestion that worked for someone else - setting Refine to true. When I set refine to true on the socket's pad, the model breaks with "Recompute failed! Please check report view." Additionally, The Rear Support that connects the Bottom and Front Plates reported conflicting constraints.
    I get the same result in 0.20.1 as well as the latest weekly build of 0.21 (which I prefer as 0.20.1 doesn't respect my constraint color settings).
    This isn't important WRT following your great tutorial videos, but I wonder if you've run into a similar problem or can suggest another approach.
