Wow. I am unreasonably lucky to be learning FreeCAD AFTER these videos were created. Your lessons are incredibly useful. Thank you for the time and work you put into this!
Luckily I followed this video, and I can see that you don't leave out any important details! I was desperate because sometimes I couldn't finish a piece of work, now I know what I did wrong and I can get back to work with new courage thanks
Thanks for these videos. I had been using DesignSpark Mechanical until a week ago. I liked using DesignSpark but, when I last tried to use it, it locked me out of all of my models - it demanded that I update my account and download DesignSpark 6. Although this wasn't too difficult, I realised that DesignSpark could terminate my account at any time (or implement a paywall) and I would lose access to all of my models. It makes much more sense for me to use FreeCAD which will always be free since it's open source. Your videos are really useful. I think I have a much greater understanding of FreeCAD after watching the first 5 videos. I was a little wary of using FreeCAD since everyone says that it's difficult, but I understand everything I have seen so far. I'll watch the other videos in the playlist!

Version 0.21.1 got rid of the Image Workbench, the new way to add an image to the XY plane is File>Import>Select your file>Open. Once it's imported you select the image in the tree and under tasks you can change the plane, etc. I haven't, however, been able to figure out how to scale the image.
It takes some time, but you can use the ruler tool to measure across the image, resize the image, delete the measurement, re-measure, etc until you can get pretty close to the size you are looking for.
Thanks for adding that. I am trying to add a sticky comment to all the videos that have tracing but it keeps getting removed. It may be because of the video link. Thank you very much for these videos!! I'm getting stuck at 13:25 when drawing the second arc. Freecad refuses to let me select the correct second and third points of the second arc where they should be on the convex curve of that protrusion. It seems to have some preference to selecting the Y-axis and ends up with a large almost 270deg arc. Any pointers?
Thank you very much for your work. I enjoyed learning very much so far. And I learned a lot especially using FreeCAD with help of your videos. I had technical drawing back in university, but that was some time ago 🤪. I like also the approach of using photos vey much as I think this is very useful when you want to modify an existing part to your liking and later maybe print it on a 3D printer.
Great to hear you enjoy videos. The ability of freecad to add photos and scale then to a known scale is a great tool to have. Great vid as usual!, thanks..FYI I was having trouble with the "Trim Edge" tool to replicate your action in 19:25 as it was not deleting the edge. Looked it up on the freecad forum (Great resource for Troubleshooting) and found that I had the "Grid Snap" option checked; it worked after I unchecked it.
Just wondering: At 3:55, we change the position of the image manually. But it requires a good judgment about where the center is. That is error-prone. Instead, can we snap it accurately? For example, I can draw a three-point circle that matches the tubular part fairly accurately. FC automatically creates the center of this circle. If I can constrain this center point of the circle to the origin, and make the image move along with the circle, I can achieve the centering perfectly. Is that possible?

Found this channel few hours ago and seem pretty useful. I know exactly what you mean about organic shapes. I have been involved in a project with one of my Patreons where we are creating an ergonomic grip. Hi , is anybody understand what he did ? 14:23 to 15:15 '' he said i dont want up and down ...''' and after that he got redundant constrain 23 and still moves up and down , so what is the idea ?? please somebody help me understand what he did?
can you please explain more in depth how to read the DoF (degree of freedom) when you click on the number and they auto select, and how to fix them. i get them and dont know what to do with the information given by the application. great videos by the way
Yes no problems. If you had a single line without any constraints it will have 4 degrees of freedom. Clicking dof will highlight both points. One point can move on the x and y so 2 degrees. The other can do the same. Equalling 4 degrees. If you add a horizontal constraint you lock the points to be in line with the edge that connects them. So you have removed 1 degree of freedom. Point 1 can move in the x direction, but moving it in y will keep the two points in line so point 2 moves at the same time. So you now have 3 degrees. Clicking dof will still highlight the two point as they can move. Clicking on point 1 and locking it to the center point of the sketch now results in 1 degree as point 2 can only move along the x axis. Clicking dof now will only highlight point 2. Remember that being fully constrained is recommended but not necessary. Glad your enjoying the videos 😊
I really enjoy your tutorials. IMO the best out there. FYI, I can't find the image to download via the link provided. Very weird and unfortunate since it would be nice to have in order to follow along.
No problems but you have highlighted the problem that some people are having. I was just moving them to my blog at mangojellysolutions.blogspot.com/2022/09/reference-images-for-beginners-freecad.html but now realise why some people are having problems. I will add that instruction to the page. Thanks for letting me know.
@@MangoJellySolutions Thanks so much for the quick reply. What I really appreciate in your videos is the fact that you show examples of what 'not to do' and what happens when you do. Having an issue once I set the first two radii of 17mm and 15mm it brings the lines off of where they should be on the reference image. Then if I continue it feels like the rest of the drawing is going to be off. How do I resolve this issue? I feel like the problem starts when I set the scale of the reference image if I’m not clicking the exact same locations as you are but still setting to the same dimension. Seems like just using the same image and setting the overall dimensions to the ones you have would be a more sure bet.
I resolved this issue by doing just what I said. Instead of setting the scale by setting the diameter I set the scale by matching the overall xy dimensions to what was shown on screen after MangoJelly set his scale with the diameter. Guess if I was making my own part off a reference image setting the scale from a known dimension is obviously how to best design the part.
Very good point, it all depends how accurate you are with where you click when you scaling. And when you zoom in everything including the edges get bigger. So do you drop the lines on the side of the edge or just in the edge. I can see where you was having problems. Thanks for sharing this information with others. Really helps with people encountering the same issue.
i love this product. puzzled that its free. Can anyone help me?? I'm having trouble with constraints an arc to a curve in freecad 21.2.. the project goes green, when i can validate Sketch and click highlight troublesome vertices. No not at all, it's just best practices. You will see further on in the series I don't fully constrain the models. Sometimes life is to short and you just want to get something done 😊
FreeCad can't seem to distinguish between .JPG and .jpg files. .JPG does not appear properly. Could not change file extension by replacing .JPG with .jpg. Had to export .jpg again from GIMP 2. Great videos so far! Not too fast and not too slow for me!
No don't worry your not doing anything wrong, so in 0.21 they have removed the image workbench and you are now able to this is with a straight import. When you import the image it comes into the treeview. Double click on the image in the treeview and you will see a panel with similar tools pop up. I made a video of this to help guide through the changes. ruclips.net/video/WhxDAgskcHA/видео.html
Yes it's been replace by using the file > import on the top menu. It's a lot different to the image workbench. Passing along the video I did to cover this ruclips.net/video/WhxDAgskcHA/видео.html
Depends on the end result your looking for and any tollerances you want to incoperate for example 5mm holes are going to be dead on 5mm. So if you have something that fits exactly in those holes then you need to add remove a little so, say the pin will fit. Or if your replicating something exactly.
I really wish you had show how to fix lines that are not connected. I come across these points that are not connected and it's almost impossible to find anywhere to show how to fix it. I haven't yet watched the entire series, but it's such a common issue. It would be great to see it get fixed earlier in the course.
When lines are not connected it means that you haven't constrained geometry together within a sketch correctly. And left them open. This is normally none by say clicking close to rather than on the end points when laying down connecting geometry. There is a tool in the sketcher called validate sketch which can highlight these troublesome areas. Thank you for the suggestion I am not sure if I have created a video but I am thinking of doing one which details how to deal with a number of errors that could occur.
@@MangoJellySolutions I'm really just started learning and I couldn't have gotten anywhere without your videos. For that I thank you. There's still much for me to learn, so will continue through your course. Funny thing. I installed FreeCAD almost 2 years ago and had open it up only once before finding your tutorials. lol.
I tried a different approach to create this geometry: 1. Created three concentric circles. (The inner two circles are to create the wall of the cylindrical body, and the outer circle is to construct the ribs.) 2. Drew 2 lines parallel to the x axis, on either side of it. 3. Drew 2 lines parallel to the y axis, on either side of it. My idea was to join the intersection points between the circles and the lines to create the four ribs. (I would have trimmed off the rest of the outer circle.) But I am unable to make the circle intersect with the lines. I tried to add a point on the circle and tried to add "coincident" constraint to create an intersection between the circle and the line. But that also does not work. Why is this happening? What should I do?
If you look at the following video it explains the process that you have to follow now. This is using the import and scaling within there ruclips.net/video/WhxDAgskcHA/видео.html
this ones giving me trouble. My picture and certain line work doesn’t line up the same even though I’m copy exactly what you do. And when I start deleting lines and get constraints that I’m not sure how to fix
There is a play list that holds all the parts. I thought I put a link to it in the description of each part, I will check the description in this video as I'm not sure if it's there.
im finding this impossible to follow. basically nothing is working for me. i find myself here for days now and I cant get around it. sorry. I need a diferent method I guess

Thank you😊😊😊
Hi , is anybody understand what he did ? 14:23 to 15:15 '' he said i dont want up and down ...''' and after that he got redundant constrain 23 and still moves up and down , so what is the idea ?? please somebody help me understand what he did?
12:13 the steps no work on 0.21.2, guide lines and drawing lines do not approximately coincide, you cannot grab a point
can you please explain more in depth how to read the DoF (degree of freedom) when you click on the number and they auto select, and how to fix them. i get them and dont know what to do with the information given by the application. great videos by the way
Yes no problems.
I want to be like you one day.
Lol, no you don't, I'm so ugly I can curddle milk at 20 yards 😂. No serious, just keep building things, you will get there 😊
I really enjoy your tutorials. IMO the best out there. FYI, I can't find the image to download via the link provided. Very weird and unfortunate since it would be nice to have in order to follow along.
Figured it out, each image has to be selected then 'saved'. There's no 'download' link. Looking forward to completing this video. Excuse my ignorance.
Having watched many hours of tuts on using FC and still have questions. Hopefully, I'll find the answers as I finish viewing this series. Your efforts in producing these videos in such detail are very much appreciated by this viewer.
Your lessons are great however, I am using Freecad 0.21.1 and there is no image workbench on this new updated version. Is there a walk around.
So it has been removed and it is now on the import but works in a slightly different way. I have created a video to explain how the new features works, I hope it helps. Here is the link ruclips.net/video/WhxDAgskcHA/видео.html. Glad your enjoying the videos
How you hide the top plane at 6:41
Press the space bar key on the keyboard. Or right click, hide.
Zoom in and i see the tangent doesn't quite join. in exhausted trying to crack this ,,, HELP
Why not just use the perpendicular constraint when defining the angle?
is being fully constrained mandatory?
No not at all, it's just best practices. You will see further on in the series I don't fully constrain the models. Sometimes life is to short and you just want to get something done 😊
FreeCad can't seem to distinguish between .JPG and .jpg files. .JPG does not appear properly. Could not change file extension by replacing .JPG with .jpg. Had to export .jpg again from GIMP 2. Great videos so far! Not too fast and not too slow for me!
Glad you enjoyed the video. And thank you for the feedback. Interesting regarding the jpeg issue. I will have a look and report to the Developers.
Your model looks very easily but very tricky
Trying to follow along only to find there is no image workbench in 0.21.1. am i missing something?
No don't worry your not doing anything wrong, so in 0.21 they have removed the image workbench and you are now able to this is with a straight import. When you import the image it comes into the treeview. Double click on the image in the treeview and you will see a panel with similar tools pop up. I made a video of this to help guide through the changes. ruclips.net/video/WhxDAgskcHA/видео.html
I'm using Ver 0.21.2 . it seems that the workbench for Image has been removed. Is it and addon or located managed a different way?
Yes it's been replace by using the file > import on the top menu. It's a lot different to the image workbench. Passing along the video I did to cover this ruclips.net/video/WhxDAgskcHA/видео.html
Could you add object jpegs links please we can practise with it@@MangoJellySolutions
İ found it from your blog, you are really detailed great Man, thanks thanks thanks 🎉🎉🎉
In CAD when you measure a part do you have to commit to that measuremet or can you say....meh instead of 38mm I'll make it 40mm?
Depends on the end result your looking for and any tollerances you want to incoperate for example 5mm holes are going to be dead on 5mm. So if you have something that fits exactly in those holes then you need to add remove a little so, say the pin will fit. Or if your replicating something exactly.
Watching this for free feels illegal
I installed FreeCAD almost 2 years ago and had open it up only once before finding your tutorials. lol.
*Note - in 1.0's preferences change the construction geometry style from dashes back to solid line or it will randomly vanish.
Hi friend. I can only create patterns on the Part Design? Can't I do patterns on the Sketcher?
muito bom
I tried a different approach to create this geometry:
1. Created three concentric circles.
(The inner two circles are to create the wall of the cylindrical body, and the outer circle is to construct the ribs.)
2. Drew 2 lines parallel to the x axis, on either side of it.
3. Drew 2 lines parallel to the y axis, on either side of it.
My idea was to join the intersection points between the circles and the lines to create the four ribs.
(I would have trimmed off the rest of the outer circle.)
But I am unable to make the circle intersect with the lines.
I tried to add a point on the circle and tried to add "coincident" constraint to create an intersection between the circle and the line.
But that also does not work.
Why is this happening? What should I do?
had to skip all these, the latest freecad doesnt have the image workbench. it says theres a way around it bt i cant see it
If you look at the following video it explains the process that you have to follow now.
Reference image not public nothing to open/download
Just had a look at www.patreon.com/posts/68032339 and it's public let me know if your still having issues
Wow, I don't know what happened but I got everything until the end and randomly a circle appeared in my sketch... (I wish I could send my screenshots)
Where is the beginning of this series? The starting point?
There is a play list that holds all the parts. I thought I put a link to it in the description of each part, I will check the description in this video as I'm not sure if it's there.

Coleman.. I think reply i would give is... why am i here hours later... and .. does it have an end >> ;-)))))
Interesting you say “KOH FYE or coffee….” When the logo for KoFi is literally a cup of coffee!
I used to work in software development. SQL is pronounced "sequel", QT is pronounced "Cute". It's made me second guess everything lol
worth more than a like and a subscribe thank you
im finding this impossible to follow. basically nothing is working for me. i find myself here for days now and I cant get around it. sorry. I need a diferent method I guess
Well, that's a "you" issue, the tutorial is as clear as it gets
I struggled with this damn sketch it literally fumed me
Thanks!
Thank you so much :) :)
Thanks
