  • Nightwish - Phantom Of The Opera
    Album: Century Child
    Year: 2002
    Lyrics:
In sleep he sang to me
    in dreams he came...
that voice which calls to me
    and speaks my name
    And do I dream again?
    For now I find
the Phantom of the Opera is there-
    inside my mind...
    Sing once again with me
    our strange duet...
    My power over you
    grows stronger yet...
And though you turn from me,
    to glance behind,
the Phantom of the Opera is there-
    inside your mind...
Those who have seen your face
    draw back in fear...
I am the mask you wear...
    It's me they hear...
    Your/my spirit and my/your voice,
    in one combined:
the Phantom of the Opera is there-
    inside your/my mind...
He's there, the Phantom of the Opera...
Beware the Phantom of the Opera...
    In all your fantasies,
    you always knew
    that man and mystery...
    ...were both in you...
    And in this labyrinth,
    where night is blind,
the Phantom of the Opera is there/here-
    inside your/my mind...
He's there the Phantom of the Opera
Sing, Sing my Angel of music, sing, Sing For Me!

i dont think you can really compare the two, seeing as though they are completely different songs, this is a "cover" of the song from the musical The Phantom of the Opera, whereas maidens is an original song based on the story of The Phantom of the Opera.

Neol The Hunter And Nightwish have performed a fragment of musical, blending it precisely with power metal, thus acquiring a symphonic power "Phantom". Then the "Phantom" was performed also by Floor Jansen (ex-After Forever) and Joachim Cans (HammerFall), this also sounds pretty cool.

    Lyrics:
I've been looking so long for you
Now you won't get away from my grasp
You've been living so long in hiding
In hiding behind that false mask
And you know and I know
That you ain't got long now to last
    Your looks and your feelings
Are just the remains of your past
    You're standing in the wings
There you wait for the curtain to fall
Knowing the terror and holding you have on us all
Yeah, I know that you're gonna scratch me, maim me and maul
You know I'm helpless from your mesmerising cat call
Keep your distance, walk away, don't take his bait
Don't you stray, don't fade away
Watch your step, he's out to get you, come what may
Don't you stray, from the narrow way
    I'm running and hiding
In my dreams, you're always there
You're the phantom of the opera
You're the devil, you're just out to scare
You damaged my mind and my soul
It just floats through the air
    Haunt me, you taunt me
You torture me back at your lair

Skill isn't really an opinion, because if you say someone who can't cut a log with an axe, is more skilled than a lumber jack, you are plain wrong... it has nothing to do with opinion, its fact. The male singer IS a screamo singer, and you saying he sounds bad, is opinion, because you just don't like screamo. Please refrain from correcting others, when they are correct, thank you.

  • @amystreasuresdesign

"To be true, almost every singer does it, but they edit it so you don't hear the breath)," WRONG! Hardly anyone does this, and no, it's not "edited out". I am a trained choir singer and I have been working on live productions at my church for years. Most singers don't breath into the mic like that while singing. Your statement just goes to show how little you know about music and singing.

@BinkyBoysGirl It's always in the realm of possibility, but I doubt it. Unfortunately for her, and I do mean this, I don't like to see people fail, she has no real talent. She can't sing, write interesting lyrics, or make anything really interesting. I'd love for her to prove me wrong and release something I can get into, but for now I don't foresee it happening. Considering she was so bashed for her very first single, she's not getting very far in the future.

    Capricia - Melodic Scream
    Might like it too ;-)

I'm a Phantom buff. Loved it since seeing the silent version my parents raised me on as a kid. I then loved the musical. You know what? Even as a hardcore Phantom buff, I can appreciate this rendition. Yeah, the tempo, melody, and Phantom's voice is off; but it makes for a gritty, metal version of the song, that is cool in it's own way.

You do realize I have no clue who she is. Also having a range of 3 octaves doesn't mean squat if you don't know anything about breath management. And to whoever it was that claimed it was romantic to breath into the mic... uh, breathing heavily like that is not romantic.

Oh no. I'm a very big fan of the musical and then finally found this song. But I'm shocked. I really like nightwish, but this song... for me it does NOT fit to the characters. The whole song is way too brutal! Also the voice of the phantom. He's not that strong and harsh! He wants always to seduce Christine somehow and NOT scare her :((( ok, it's my own opinion, well I recommend to you listening to the original, it's great ;)

For this song, yes, I prefer cleaner vocals, mainly because of the context of the song. There are other parts of the musical in which the Phantom is angry and screaming, but in this part he's trying to seduce the woman, so screaming angrily doesn't make sense. From ofther songs I've heard by Nightwish, recommended by other RUclips users, the singer actually could have done it.
Regrettably, I don't know who Roy Khan is.

I discovered this song listening to Nightwish's version. When I understood, it was composed by someone else, I listened to the original and just found it had no originality.
It's juste one of those songs from the musicals.
Marco is perhaps a "screamo". But, it's precisely the contrast between his voice and Tarja's voice which gives this song all its interest.
Nightwish version is just unique. If you don't like metal sonorities, don't listen...

The Breathing is meant to be ornamental as a means of conveying passion. Musically the artist accomplish what they were trying to convey. You must understand that every style of music is an expression of a culture or subculture. Does "O Nata Lux" have to sound like "Jambo Rafiki" and "Kalinka" like "Lady Sweet and Kind" to be considered musically sound? "Phantom Of The Opera" by Nightwish conforms to its own musical genre and does not have to sound like a choral piece.

There are a few weak songs on it (Slow, Love, Slow and Arabesque are not exactly Tuomas-quality songs) but also some masterpieces that rival and even best the old works (I Want My Tears Back, whoa!)
While it is always sad to see a strong cooperation of artists break up, like recently with Symfonia, the reality is that they will not work together again. Which is quite okay, as both Nightwish and Tarja are doing well.

@bubbles1x The book was first published as a serial from 1909-1910. Leroux can scarcely have published the book in the early 1990s, given that he died in the 1920s, and Webber couldn't write a musical in 1986 based on a book published in the 1990s. First it was a book (1909-1910), then film (first in 1916, first surviving film is from 1925), then musical (first musical was written in 1972, Webber's was in 1986), then films based on the Webber musical (as far as I know 2004 is the only one).

No, I don't. The BOOK was written in the early 1990s, but it was done as a MOVIE (meaning no songs) in 1924. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote a musical about Le Fantome de L'Opera (my computer doesn't do accents, so bear with me) by Gaston Leroux in 1986, which is based on his book. It began in London's West End for the queen in 1986 and was redone on Broadway in 1988. Then it was redone in Las Vegas. And recently, it was put on by my school =)

@NewxBeginnings Because if enough talent soprano singer who originally way fits with metal music, is kicking out of and the new one is pop rock voicing homelady, its the biggest mistake ever made in the history of metal. Ive hardly ever been bitter about some crews` changing of some band but Nightbitch is the big exception. And its always double harder to finnish guy as I :D Greets to those 83 swedish who opened this video.

@Any people who hate the Phantom in this rendition.
Why all the hate for the "Phantom"? No, he may not sound quite like you may have imagined or heard before, but it's still nonetheless a good rendition of the original song, IMO. In the storyline, Christine heard the voice of the Phantom, and after hearing his beautiful, bewitching, unearthly voice, assumed he was an angel. Never was it said he needed to sound as you thought.

have to say, I do prefer Tarja because of her unique operatic voice. But this doesn't mean that Annette is a bad singer, or that I refuse to listen to her Nightwish sings. She's a hell of a lot better than most singers out there, and I fully respect her as the new frontwoman for Nightwish. And, anyway, if I want Tarja's voice I can just listen to her solo. It's not like there's any problems.

@JennyAndLenny Most bands want to keep their lead singer around. If she is a victim, that makes four band members liars. If she is the guilty party (at least primarily), that makes two people liars. Reductionism, people. I know Tarja was better looking than the rest of the band, but that doesn't mean we should throw scientific methodologies out the window. I like her new albums and Nightwish's new stuff, though Nightwish clearly had most of the talent.

The girl is amazing. She is perfect for what her role is supposed to be.
The guy on the other hand, IMHO isn't the right voice for the Phantom.
Don't get me wrong, his voice is perfect for other stuff, but it just doesn't work well here. It would be miles better if someone sang that part in a operatic/early metal style along the lines of Bruce Dickinson (of Iron Maiden) or Freddie Mercury (of Queen). That would not only fit the Phantom well, it also works with the rock/metal arrangement

I am not sure what the point of your is comment is (not trying to be rude.)
The movie in 1925 was also based off the book "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux just like Maiden's song and Webber's play. Also the movie was a silent horror film, meaning there were no compositions for the movie, therefore there would have been nothing for Maiden to cover.
Regardless, Iron Maiden have said their song is an original piece based off the book, nothing else.

I don't understand dislikes on music. That means someone who already didn't like it came to the video to bash it. I find beauty in all music, Rebecca Black not withstanding.

I may prefer the original, but you can't compare it to this... there is nothing to compare... that is operatic, this is metal... and they're both absolutely incredible...

I have loved the original for years. i also love this version. I think, however, that ultimately it comes down to taste. One thing for sure though, I believe that its a good thing for nightwish to of done this cover, thus opening a doorway to Andrew Lloyd Webber to a different demographic of people who may of otherwise not known of him and his work.

3:12 This part could have been way better if they used the orchestral part from the original... where's the big build up to that final note?? Tarja's squeal thing proved she could do it!! :( I'm a huge Nightwish fan but this is one cover that could have been loads better if it were more faithful with the outro.

alright people stop talking about vocal range. it all counts on the palate being lifted and making sure that you breath right. otherwise your voice turns to crap. believe me im in choir and Im also im soprano 1 so that requires me to sing really high. and yes this singer is fucking amazing, thats why i love this band. now stop with the arguing and just listen to the music

Actually, no. It's a musical. It was written in 1986 by Andrew Lloyd Webber to feature his ex-wife, Sarah Brightman (Christine). In 2004, it was redone by Joel Schumacher and featured Gerard Butler as the Phantom and Emmy Rossum as Christine Daaé. Either way, it's always a musical. Never a movie or show.

At first, I wasn't convinced by Marco's version of the Phantom because it was so different from what I had heard before. But it grew on me, and now this is really my favorite version. It's even better live. I like Marco's Phantom because he just sounds so dark and evil. The Phantom isn't supposed to be NICE.

@RameshChotanagour That's a matter of opinion. I personally think that Tarja was their voice and their recognition value, but Tuomas is their brain, their core, their heart and also their soul. And Dark Passion Play has got all these things, but just a different voice. In my opinion the good ones are great, too.

My opinion is that...well...maybe it sounds bitchy but I think that they shouldn't have the name Nightwish anymore. They were Nightwish with Tarja in it. Since Anette is in it, it's totally different and it sucks. So my opinion is that they should've shanged the name when Tarja was gone. I WANT TARJA BACK!!!

@xEscapeTheHatex i agree the band i am part of have done some rocky stuff (by that i do mean rock not rocky the film) there is no way you can continue without a stop you just wreck you voice , i have to stop sometimes when drumming with rock its just as bad except its your arms not your voice that gets wrecked.
