Just wanted to recommend a channel I watch. It's JOUNAIL. She does amazing designs and I love watching her videos because they're also ASMR (That's how I found her actually. 😊). I've been doing my nails with normal nail polish (the one you don't cure in a lamp, I don't know how it's called 😅) my whole life, but I kind of want to cross over into gel polish, although I'm not sure when that'll happen. So, I'm excited to see your journey ❤
So glad you're back! As you are laying lines for any shape you're going to fill in with color, you want to have as little product on the brush as possible when you're doing your lines. You obviously want the color to be opaque, but having either less product on the brush or a lighter hand will help with that. As someone else mentioned, using a larger brush to fill in the actual shape is helpful because, even if you laid down too much product with the liner, you can spread it out a bit with the larger brush. I personally fill in the edges of the shapes with more product with the liner and use a small oval brush to spread out that color.
Of course! You want the gel on the brush to be about as thick as you want your line to be. If it balls up on the end just wipe off the end of the brush on your silicone mat and you'll be good to go.
Loved this❤ such a great full cover tip shape too! And for frenchies, I stopped fantasizing about being able to paint a smooth symmetrical French, I buy stickers, put them on, do a layer of color, then cure, do a second and then remove them and I have a PERFECT CRISP tip, there is a little ridge but once you put top coat and what not on it evens out and it’s not noticeable! I mean that’s really if you don’t mind not hand painting it, I know that a huge thing with nail techs and at home nail guys and gals. But you could try floating a layer of the silver over your lines and filled space, before curing to get it to self level and be more smooth❤ Either way what a beautiful set!
I LOVE your honesty and authenticity. This is what us nail techs go through. The imperfect french, (although your french was pretty spot on, I'm envious. ;-)) the free style art and changing our minds. I also love how you ask for help or tips with what you struggle with. When RUclipsrs are real, that is what keeps me coming back. Love your channel! xo
When I want a painted french or other design to look really smooth and flat, I'll paint it on then use a thicker top coat, cure and then give the nail a really good buff before doing my final top coat. It really helps even everything out!
James these are stunning!! Freehanding ombre on yourself is really hard (I've tried) For the silver, I think you need to do your smile line first but then you can flood the rest by loading more product onto your brush while you're trying to fill in. It will be a thicker nail tip but it will be smoother. The Silver looks like it might be really thick so it could also just not be the right product for the job. I look forward to seeing your next design < 3 !
Your nail videos inspire me to try doing my own nails but I don’t know where to start 😭 maybe a super basic, need-to-know beginner video on how to do your own nails James Welsh edition? 😅 Sending loads of love 🫶🏻
Your nails are gorg!! I’m a professional educator and while I have a few tips, trust your instincts because you’re on the right track. With a sponged ombré the texture and blending are always tricky. You can do a super thin uncured slip coat, use a mostly dry brush, let the products merge together a bit before curing. I find that on the first two layers it helps with the transition line. A hint of super fine shimmer is also a win. For the extreme French, try a grid method. Use your fine liner to create straight lines from the top corner of the smile line to the center and lowest point in the belly of the smile. Now you have two symmetrical sides and you can slowly tease the gel into place and refine using a shorter tipped brush if needed. If you have a liner brush you can’t get to work, as in your lines are too thick but still using light pressure, thin it by trimming from the outside in to keep it centered. My favorite is 10 strands or fewer, 3 being my Goldilocks. In regards to flatness, it’ll never happen no matter how thin your application is. You can always encapsulate by working the design before building your apex which makes it so durable or fill the back of the French with clear to create a smooth surface. Hope this was helpful!! Can’t wait to see what you create next! ❤
Oh I just love these! I know you're not super confident with your work, but you really do a beautiful job! Amazing James! Thanks again for another great nail vid... I HAVE missed them! So nice to see ya back at it!❤
I find these videos so informative and relaxing. And of course I so appreciate the honesty that I feel like you (and Robert, Marcus, and Ashton ❤) share with us on here and your other channels - each one with a different vibe. Thanks for a little weekend treat!
To help lay your Frenchie gel colors flat/not textured: USE YOUR LINER BRUSH FOR ONLY THE OUT LINE, THEN FILL IN THE REST WITH A REGULAR BRUSH. EITHER FROM THE BOTTLE OF THE COLOR YOUR USING OR A REGULAR (BIGGER +FLATTER THAN THE LINER) GEL ART BRUSH!! ALSO ONLY APPLY THIN COATS. ITS BETTER TO DO 2 THIN COATS RATHER THAN 1 THICK/TEXTURED COAT!! Hope this helps❤❤
omg putting a thin coat of a white syrup gel is GENIUS?!?!?! I have that same issue of hating the dappled look you get but I've GOT to try this :D A slightly wider brush with a flat side may help a bit with the texture OR just painting a 2nd layer over the silver after it's cured may help. I usually paint a thin layer of painting gel like a slip layer and make the layer a little thicker so it's just thick enough to self level before curing. gives it a very slightly embossed look but at least it gets rid of the uneven texture. great video!
For laying the paint flat on a French tip I find it looks a lot nicer when I first do my outline with a liner brush and then fill it in with the nail polish brush. I know you’re not using a color that’s in a bottle with a brush, but it might help to use a slightly wider flat brush to fill it in. Also, using a good slightly thicker top coat over the top tends to smooth things out and make things look more even. I’m so happy you’re posting more content here! I love how interesting and fun your designs are!!
so glad to see you back! and with such a gorgeous set. 🤩 a wider brush will help with the brush strokes. map out the frenchie with the liner & then fill it in with a square or oval gel application brush. madam glam has a petal brush that's fantastic for filling in bigger (but not necessarily *too* big) spaces. it would be perfect for filling in the shapes that you did on your thumb. beautiful set, babes! 🖤
I love those nails. When I do French nails I use a slanted brush / and fix it up with a short thin art brush. You can do a set faster than the stamper cheat no mater how shallow or deep
I just came across one of your nail videos and I LOVED it. I have been trying to find someone I can learn new polish techniques from and you are very easy listen to and follow. Thank you!!
Hi..tip here James ❤ with the silver (or really any gel you can't get to lay flat...go ahead and paint it on fairly generously (but still not too thick as to cause curing issues) then when you are done painting it, and before u paint anything else you don't want to flatten...fo ahead and use a very fine buffer to buff over the surface gently until smooth. It will look matte but once you topcoat...beautiful again :)
If you want a chrome finish, I would recommend using chrome art paint for fine lines only, because of the texture that happens. If you want chrome on a larger area, like the French, use chrome powder or foil!! I think foil looks the best.
I smooth my painterly lines by applying a generous top coat. Then cure, then smooth it with a sanding block, high grit if you’ve got options. Not down to the french tip, obvs. Then over again with a final, thinner top coat.
I'm so glad you posted a new video! I was very interested to see what you've learned so far. These nails are perfect for the Halloween season. Great work, James! 😍👏🏻
I got a thermal gel polish that gives the same effect a nudey pink with black at the free edge😊 it turns black if my hands are cold and the nude if very warm but at normal temp my edge is black. Good for beginners but I glad to learn this method🤗
05:17 the technic of using rat tail brushes is land the tip and move it and let the rest of the brush land and follow the tip....just like a rat tail or a lash/wip. That way the line will end up cleaner. ❤
I just did a Halloween set a spiderweb with black French with Sam from Trick R Treat and Freddy. I didn't know you had a nail channel 😃 I've been wanting to try that peel off base your using. I keep seeing mixed reviews. I want something that will last maybe a week but easy to get off but won't be popping off unexpectedly 😂 This is such a cool set you did ❤ I'm not very creative so I might steal your idea.🙈
Was wondering whether we'd see you here again! Great video, thanks James. I don't know how anyone could function with nails that length and sharpness!😮
I know I'm a bit late to the video, but what you're talking about with the brush strokes is the leveling agent in the gel polish. If it's in a pot it's likely a thicker viscosity with less leveling capabilities, because it's made for line art. Not all brands are created equal though, of course.
Nice work. Very classy goth glam Use a wider brush for a smoother application of the paint. Invest in a brush which you can use as a clean up brush, dampened in isopropyl alcohol.
Oh yay! What a nice video to come home to! 🤔 I'm no nail expert, but if it's not just this particular paint being finicky maybe it's the tool. You're using a really fine tipped brush which I don't think would be great for filling in larger areas.
Love to see longer vids. Your silver nail paint might be too thick - you can loosen with a very small drop of clear and /or use a softer wider brush to fill in with after lining it. You're doing a really good job! Nude to black is a hard ombre! 🤍🩶🖤
I feel like the liner brush is to just outline? Maybe a larger brush to fill in and avoid the texture? I can’t say that I’ve been successful at this either. Love TGB! I’m a big fan as it is the ONLY product that lasts on my nails and doesn’t lift like a sonofabeesh (and I’ve tried a LOT of products).
Doing ombre is a real pain and soo time consuming, but I've found the best solution (at least for me) which is the airbrusher. May I ask you which brand/model is that long liner brush? I have 5 or 6 of that, but nothing satisfies me. That one seems really good though.

THEN TAKE YOUR BUFFER AND LITERALLY BUFF THE NAIL JUST LIKE YOU WOULD AFTER YOUR OVERLAY EXTENTIONS. BUFF GENTLY BUT UNTIL IT IS SMOOTH AND YOU CANT FEEL THAT HEIGHT DIFFERENCE!! Hope this help also!!❤❤
I do my French tips, with a wide brush in a straight line, and the with a flat brush and polish remover do the smile, I don’t know or I explained myself 😂
For the tip to be flat stop the milky color before the tip and …. Actually use a milky color - clear coatings are notoriously thick as they are meant to encapsulate the nail for protection- ciao 😘
HI, Only just recently "discovered" you and your brother so I have loads of catching up that I am doing. Quick question, I am obsessed and I mean obsessed with Kirsty Meakin and would love to hear your opinions and feedback on her products and obviously she is amazing with nails. ♥
Silver paint is Acrylic paint. Liquid acrylic For painters. And you can buy cheap acrylic paints in art stores. Silver, gold etc... It's 100 % same. Also there you can buy gold, silver, bronze lief foil. Fake or REAL GOLD, silver, bronze lief foil. And Yes, Mylar Flakes, also. In many different colors. You will get a lot amount for cheap price😉 And other stuff like resin, Original Kolinski Brushes for Acryl, Poly Gel, One Stroke technique. You have sizes. And more and more... GOD BLESS ART STORES ❤
You do such lovely work!! I do just have to say, (and I hate to be this guy) those aren’t Gel X. gelX X is a line from Apres. Those are full cover gel tips, or press tips, or gel tips. But Gel X is a trademarked line, not an application method or style of nail. Just like Shellac. It’s a trademarked line of gel polish by CND.
Just wanted to recommend a channel I watch. It's JOUNAIL. She does amazing designs and I love watching her videos because they're also ASMR (That's how I found her actually. 😊). THANK YOU for this recommendation!! Her work is exactly what I’ve been looking for!! 😭
She is awesome. She gives you 5 different nails with a theme.
Omg I LOVE her videos!!
I Absolutely love Jounail!!!!
Kirsty Meakin is amazing aswell!!❤❤

Ohhhhhhh that’s a good idea!
Clear builder gel in a bottle is self leveling so I do that over a french and that makes it look flat and go over with a top coat after that.
James these are stunning!! Freehanding ombre on yourself is really hard (I've tried)

love the tiny silver tips! you can see the black ombre much more 🖤
they're kinda like those little mini "invisible" socks people wear 🤭

Yay! Your back with your nails!
I like nail design on your right hand. I'm glad you are back😊.
This could not be more timely, I just started trying out nail art and the set I'm working on is a black / nude ombre. Yours looks so good!
They are SO cute! I love them as they are!
These could be interesting in a dark blue with a pewter-gun metal tip too!
These are so GOOD!!!!🖤🖤🖤 Your skills are sharpening!!!👏👏👏👏
Good job James, as far as doing a French, make the line where you want it, then fill it in with the bigger brush, it will be smoother.😊
These are beautiful and that nail shape is just 😍
I kept checking back to see if there was new nail video when I seen the twin video and your video with your nails. I love them!
Love this! Watching you learn and just try things makes nail art feel more attainable for me as a total novice. 💜
I love those nails. When I do French nails I use a slanted brush / and fix it up with a short thin art brush. You can do a set faster than the stamper cheat no mater how shallow or deep
So excited for more nail content! 🎉
What a beautiful design!

They turned out beautifully!
Yayyy!!!! Hiii!! Iv havent missed you, (follows you and your brother everywhere) but I've missed your nail content 😅😅😅❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Im am really impressed by your skills!! 😮 well done!!
This is timely for me! I’ve been thinking of doing a dark/nude French for my next set. Thank you for the inspo!
They are stunning.
I smooth my painterly lines by applying a generous top coat. Then cure, then smooth it with a sanding block, high grit if you’ve got options. Not down to the french tip, obvs. Then over again with a final, thinner top coat.
Thank you! I really love the shiny silver bit you put on your accent nail. Definitely going to have to get myself some 💅
I had no idea you did nails! Im so excited...I love you and your brothers and all your channels 😊
I like the micro tips!
Thanks! I want them a bit less….micro 😅
It's so cute! Love it! Kinda Halloweenie vibes

James, i really love the nails. Cool looking. So looking forward in your next nail video. You're doing such an amazing job. Sending love your way 🖤💜🖤
With gel paints I tend to get a little bowl of warm water and pop it in for 5 minutes to loosen up the gel to make it easier to work with xx
Look at you, building apexes and what not! The nails look great.
Ahhh haha thank you!
Was wondering whether we'd see you here again! Great video, thanks James. I don't know how anyone could function with nails that length and sharpness!😮
Love this nail content!
Yay!!! Your back ❤
I know I'm a bit late to the video, but what you're talking about with the brush strokes is the leveling agent in the gel polish. If it's in a pot it's likely a thicker viscosity with less leveling capabilities, because it's made for line art. I would try to find a thicker brush (so there is less strokes to fill in the desired area) or a silver gel in a bottle, which will likely have more leveling capabilities. Not all brands are created equal though, of course.
Advise from russian nail tech) mix gel paint with gel polish 50*50 for your french to not chip off)
Awesome work!)
I love those James
Gorgeous and spooky!
Ive missed youuuuuuuuuuu i hope u can continue posting more on here! ❤❤
Nice work. Very classy goth glam
Use a wider brush for a smoother application of the paint. Invest in a brush which you can use as a clean up brush, dampened in isopropyl alcohol.
very purty 💅 💅 thanks for sharing ☺
gorgeous!!
Beautiful!
Beautiful nails ❤
Yay! New video! Love the ombre. Looking forward to seeing how your testing goes with different methods and techniques 🩷
So glad to see this video! Can't wait to see if you come up with some halloween designs!❤
Yay you're back! These look stunning, I love them. I really like your short nails design too, they look amazing
Love this set
I just got done with work and saw this notification. Perfect timing! And I LOVE a black ombre french, so I'm excited to watch!🤗
Oh yay! What a nice video to come home to! 🤔 I'm no nail expert, but if it's not just this particular paint being finicky maybe it's the tool. You're using a really fine tipped brush which I don't think would be great for filling in larger areas.
Oh shit, that looks good!
Also… bring the thin edge of the the French tip down further - that helps to elongate the nail and finger making it appear more elegant
YAY NAILS
Also another yay for boy nails!
Very cool 💜💅
Very nice❤
Omg I’ve never been first yayyyyyyy you and your brother are awesome
Ahhhhhh heyyyy! Thanks so much! 💜
Love to see longer vids. Your silver nail paint might be too thick - you can loosen with a very small drop of clear and /or use a softer wider brush to fill in with after lining it. You're doing a really good job! Nude to black is a hard ombre! 🤍🩶🖤
I didnt know you did nails too!!!!!
Loved this set. I think the silver colour is a bit thick, that's why, it's really pigmented.
“They’re really interrupting my life” 😂 yeah I don’t understand how anyone could have nails that long
I feel like the liner brush is to just outline? Maybe a larger brush to fill in and avoid the texture? I can’t say that I’ve been successful at this either. Love TGB! I’m a big fan as it is the ONLY product that lasts on my nails and doesn’t lift like a sonofabeesh (and I’ve tried a LOT of products).
James what the hell I never knew you did a nails channel!!!
I’m going to try a black ombre this weekend! Not with the silver details. I’ll post it on Instagram unless it’s a disaster😂
about timeeeee
Doing ombre is a real pain and soo time consuming, but I've found the best solution (at least for me) which is the airbrusher.
May I ask you which brand/model is that long liner brush? I have 5 or 6 of that, but nothing satisfies me. That one seems really good though.
For the "tribal"/90's Shirt line art to not be so chunky: AFTER YOU CURE, GO OVER THE WHOLE NAIL WITH A MATTE TOP COAT. THEN TAKE YOUR BUFFER AND LITERALLY BUFF THE NAIL JUST LIKE YOU WOULD AFTER YOUR OVERLAY EXTENTIONS. BUFF GENTLY BUT UNTIL IT IS SMOOTH AND YOU CANT FEEL THAT HEIGHT DIFFERENCE!! Hope this help also!!❤❤
Did you do a full 60 sec cure when you were applying the black gradient build up? These are really nice!
Or was it a flash cure???
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I do my French tips, with a wide brush in a straight line, and the with a flat brush and polish remover do the smile, I don’t know or I explained myself 😂
For the tip to be flat stop the milky color before the tip and …. Actually use a milky color - clear coatings are notoriously thick as they are meant to encapsulate the nail for protection- ciao 😘
Can you make a dipping powder nails video
Wait a damn minute you have a NAIL CHANNEL!? #subbed
Thanks for sharing. Great nail tutorial. Creative nail design. #jofayfashion
