  • In 1967, George Balanchine choreographed three ballets, Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds, for New York City Ballet. Today, we know them as Jewels.
Pacific Northwest Ballet Artistic Director Peter Boal brought Jewels to PNB in 2006. Since then, he has invited members of the original cast to coach our dancers. In 2014, we were honored to have four of the original dancers in our Seattle studios. Through rehearsals, lecture-demonstrations and interviews, they left an indelible mark on the Company.
In observance of the 50th anniversary of Jewels, we are sharing their wealth of knowledge, insight and humor.

I was fortunate enough to attend the rehearsals taught by Edward Villella and Jacques d'Amboise...they were magical. And I am so thankful that PNB has archived these wonderful times for us all to learn from and enjoy forever. This is a very special documentary.

Hi jaques! So nice to see you giving your expertise to the PNB dancers. What a treat! Oh and there is our beautiful Violette! No matter who I see dance this, even though they are all wonderful in it and bring their own artistry to the piece, I always remember the solo because for me Emeralds has her idelible stamp on it. Edward Villella and Mimi Paul too! You guys are so lucky to have them. Savor the moment.

so lovely to hear Jacques d'Amboise commending the pianist. It must be a thankless job sometimes, to play for ballet class and rehearsals.

If only Olga Smirnova and the other Russians could watch Korbes tear into that Diamonds manege with such daring and abandon, and learn from it.
