Jewels in rehearsal (The Royal Ballet)

- Опубликовано: 5 мар 2017
- Join dancers of The Royal Ballet in the studio as they prepare for George Balanchine's Jewels. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/jewels
TV and radio broadcaster Kirsten O’Brien will host the event, which will feature interviews and rehearsals with Artists of The Royal Ballet, ballet repetiteur Elyse Borne, and the American choreographer and director Patricia Neary. Neary, a former dancer with New York City Ballet, works for The George Balanchine Trust and alongside Borne is responsible for staging his works around the world.
Balanchine made history when he created Jewels - the first abstract three-act ballet. It was first performed in 1967 by New York City Ballet. The choreographer was reportedly inspired by the beauty of the precious stones he saw in Van Cleef & Arpels in New York.
Principals of The Royal Ballet Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae will rehearse a section of Act I, ‘Rubies’. Then, fellow Principals Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares will rehearse ‘Diamonds’.
Each section, featuring the music of Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky, salutes a different era in classical ballet’s history as well as a distinct period in Balanchine’s own life. Through it all, Balanchine displays his genius for combining music with visionary choreography.
The insight also features an in-depth look at the ballet’s ornate costumes with costume supervisor Allan Watkins.
I love Steven! Something about his dancing is magical. It looks so easy.
Marianela looks so incredibly happy to be dancing all the time. I love it so much!
I love Marianela, she is so passionate and you can see joy in all her dancing, I particularly love her in the role of Kitri.
RIP Elyse Borne. She's a joy to watch here, glad her funny and insightful corrections are preserved for future generations.
Sarah is exquisite! As Pat Neary said at the beginning of the rehearsal, this was a first run-through with little prep before hand. Steven McRae and Sarah together are just beautiful. Can't wait to see the airing. It was a treat, as well, hearing Sarah's wit and intellect shine so brilliantly.
I enjoy listening to Ms. Lamb speak, as well as dance. She is clear, eloquent, succinct. Thank you for that, ballerina !
All my favourite principal dancers in one rehearsal! I love it! They make everything look so effortless when there is so much work behind them.
I love Sarah Lamb even more for her quiet commentary on the state of America. She's not just a beautiful dancer but also a thinker. She's still my favorite.
The state of America…in 2023. Ugh.
what I would really like to see on one of these insights , is how they rehearse the corps ... in an early rehearsal ... how everyone learns , who stands where etc .. love corps work wish we could see more of it TIA
You can find some footage of the corps de ballet in rehearsal in the following videos:

seen them hundreds of times each !!! love them !!!
Working with Patricia Neary is literally a dream! She and her sister Colleen are incredible teachers of the Balanchine style! I am SO honored to have worked with them both on Balanchine work at Los Angeles Ballet!!
Marianela is adorable! I love her enthusiasm
"There is nothing like watching the joy of the dance in you"
NEARY, Patricia
When i look at this ballet i find myself wondering in which act i'd like to dance, and i find no answer. All three acts are the definition of beauty, and yet they're so different from each other. Nunez is simply outstanding, by the way.
I danced Rubies , yet find yourself often questioning as you are , I wanted Diamonds! As for Swan Lake my soul is Odette ....
Sarah and Steven are my absolute favorite pair!! Such chemistry, technique and artistry! They are full fledged artists. Literally from head to toe.
Just to show you how old I am, I saw Patricia Neary dance in Jewels with the New York City Ballet!
Why did she leave NYCB so young?
Annabella Escobar ... I believe "Mr B" in a far sighted move wanted her to act as an international ambassador for him and his style.
Good for her to be asked by Mr B to act as international ambassador, but I hope she continued to dance in those companies.
Anne Harrison ... Yes, anything certainly is possible!
There's a really good documentary about Suzanne Farrell, which you might watch: 'Suzanne Farrell: Elusive Muse'. It tells the story of Balanchine's obsession with her. Or read her memoir. She was the most important ballerina of the NYC Ballet, and Balanchine's obsession with her caused lots of problems for other gifted dancers.
But that wasn't Suzanne's fault.
Lamb is going to be a fabulous teacher in the future when she's done dancing. I could see students listening to her for hours. :)
Steven McRae is so beautifully perfect.
A dancer like Marianela Nunez comes along once in a century
Oliver Downunder funny puppies
And Plisetskaya? But these two dancers are as fabulous!
@@nomado3650 Yes I would include Plistskaya. Yes these dancers are fabulous.
Marieanela Nunez is a joy and a treasure. Wow.
Marianela is a dream.
She gives me goosebumps just watching her in rehearsal!
Icarrus Legrand I was just about to comment that she is GORGEOUS!
My sincere thanks. A real privilege to see the gloriously beautiful display of virtuosity of the dance artist at work. Many thanks.
Marianela Nunez just stunning to watch, thank you.
Wow! What a treat to see this. I am a huge fan of the studio and the rehearsals. I seem to "see" into the core of the dancers, the choreography and the music in some greater way. The relaxed intimacy of the venue would seem to provide something extra special. Kind of like those old grainy black and white Avedon or David Bailey photographs from the 70's that would allow the observer some unforseen access beyond what "color" could ever afford. And everyone here was a delight. Loving The Royal all the way from California ! Cheers !
my heart agrees with you I am humbly but aptly watching every tendu ... from a very cold rainy day on Bantry Bay in Eire -Cheers all !
Thanks for posting. I love the music from Diamonds pas and to hear it on piano was beautiful. And Marinela is my favorite ballerina, what a treat.
God. I'm so mad at myself for discovering this magical ballet duo AFTER my time in London this summer! I hope to see them live one day!
"It's important to get someone who knew him...except we're all dying now...." LOL This illustrates the importance of passing down the craft. And as I said in another comment, someone like Lamb will be a fabulous carrier of information to pass on to future generations!
these dancers are so exceptional and truly compliment each other in perfect balance.
Sarah and Steven look so amazing together. Their dancing moves so smoothly. Really hope I can go to this ballet.
It`s a pleasure for me seeing Pat Neary working as stager. I love her videos (there are not enough, why?) Many years ago I saw her dancing Adama`s Medusa together with Karl Musil. She was a giant on stage, very impressing, Nice watching her again with this dancers.
this was so beautiful. thank you ROH for this unique opportunity!
Such a treat. Thank you ROH!
They are absolutely beautiful!!!
Must be fun to have Patricia and Elyse around! They seem really fun
Nela is a gift to the art form. So special and so insanely talented.
Steven is a unique dancer ! 💐❤️
Thank u ,Nela. Outstanding and breathtaking ballerina!
Omg, that was so beautiful! The music as well.
Elyse has staged seven Balanchine ballets for Singapore Dance Theatre and all of them are wonderful. She just finished The Four Temperaments here, our most recent addition.
I actually cry twice with marianela! Its just perfection
Thank you! Thank you! This was so amazing to watch
These are magnificent. I never took much ballet and I regret it immensely.
Have I just never noticed how absolutely beautiful the Diamonds pas de deux is or is it just I've never seen Nunez dance it before
Balanchine choreography is fast feet! I love the technique of the abstract.
From Maui, Thank you Sarah and Steven!!! So beautiful. Aloha, JillFitz
who else is watching this when it isn't live
I’m living in the good world. I can watch this !
Wonderful! Thank you!
why is the audio outta whack
The teacher is so kind and understanding!
How utterly awesome.
Thank you and I am watching this in Milan Italy!
Royal ballet makes Balanchine look GREAT!
Awesome Marianela !!
Thank you. Wonderful.
Im very glad to watch this video
I could watch marianela dancing all day long
Steven McRea is so lovely!
this makes me so happy
Loved it-
Wonderful Marianela, our Argentine star.
A true embodiment of a diamond
Stunning.
Omg I remember Patricia neary when she was dancing with NYCB. I used to go all the time
RIP Elyse Borne 😢
I GET TO GO SEE THIS
che bravissimi che siete
i really would love to join their company someday, and if i did make it in i would stay as long as i could and stay longer to fix and maintain the costumes
Stephen and Sarah are individually amazing, and so amazing together. What a great partnership. And add the legenday Colleen Neary to the mix, coaching Jewels -- I'm in balletomane heaven! These in-rehearsal videos are the BEST! Bravi, Royal! More, more!
why is the sound WAY out of sync???
Mcrae and Lamb's Rubies is the best version I've ever seen, bar none! Balanchine would be pleased.
But I absolutely adored this.
Steven is Amazing...unbelievable i love hin
Balanchine alive forever!!!!!
Marianela isn't truly mesmerizing! You can tell that she enjoys dancing more than anything!
"When America was very happy to have immigrants" omg
Vitoria S. That remark that she tossed out there was brilliant.
in what minute did this happened!!!
Around 34:22, when Sarah is talking about Balanchine.
Vitoria S. 😂😂😂😂😂
indeed lolll that was just a fab line
Marianela Nunez...!! How much she loves dancing!
Oh my god the costumes designer sayings he’s a Libra - MOOD
omg I love the music for rubies and also the music for ROH's Alice in Wonderland's Cards Scene
she is 36, omg, this is fascinating
Marianela dances so beautifully here. For the actual performance posted on RUclips there was some criticism (including from me) that her style was wrong, too slow, too static. I think it must have been the fault of the conductor making the tempo too slow, because here she is ravishing and keeps everything in motion, just as it should be. I am so happy to see this, because I love her. (Who doesn't?)
I would kinda feel nervous. With the live audience watching you teach haha
I really am enjying every apect f World ballet day 2017 not danced in a decade and just shelfed my memirs and also blcked social media for symphonic conducting and writing , I left the U$A to work more in film and publishing a book , reading the comments I am very inspired and ask all of you which dancers -principal and which companies are the superior and why are youdrawn to them? thank you my pointes have been retired but I am finding my heart is not ! I am living in a very rural coastline of Eire and never get to speak abut this subject and wuld love to ...slainte and cheers or " Libiamo!"
I wish they would express that when going through fifth the hands always crossed each other. That would give a more Balanchine aesthetic. I do get what she is saying about the walk in the beginning. something arm wise is missing and upper body to . There are some clips of Sara Mearns in Diamonds and her walk is just stunning and so Balanchine. ( Backstage with Sara Mearns at the end shows the drama of diamonds) I can't believe i'm actually critiquing Marianela Nunez. Her and Sarah are off the charts amazing!! I've just seen too many clips of this ballet by NYCB.
Neely Crombie Sara Mearns is sublime in Jewels!
thank you fr sharing this Neely Crombie ! Happy World ballet day 2017!
Nela was perfect all the time
The Balanchine hero worship is so striking. It's almost like they were in love with him. A bit unnerving really.
♥♥
Boy...has Pat Neary mellowed???!!!
Omg Marianela. SWOON!
Sarah's pointe shoes are so soft! Such a lovely arch, but I would find it so painful!
How can you tell if pointe shoes are hard or soft while someone is dancing?
@@JewelBelleLove by how broken in the 3 quarter point is
@@xxcallmeniaxx3272 Thank you!!!!
37:00 Sarah is so well knowledged and has a great opinion.
Oh, wait i forgot somthing!!!
His name was Steven McRae.
While there Is no doubt that McCrae and Lamb are great dancers, their style, which I guess is the Royal Ballet Style, seems too lyrical and soft to me for Rubies...I am too used to the angular spikiness of the NYCB's interpretation. Nunes and her partner were magnificent in Diamonds
Karen Katz that's exactly what i think...ROH rubies is too soft but the are all Amazing dancers
1:00:35
I missed it.
9:28 ballet dabbing (I’m sorry)
Entendi
35:50
sarah limbs, just wow. she must have an incredible core.. she obviously has insane leg and ankle/calf strength.
Still looks like ROH doing Balanchine. There is something about the hip thrust. They are isolating the hip too much and Sarahs hands should be stronger and more open.
Neely Crombie I actually like the fact that it looks like the Royal Ballet doing Balanchine. Yes, it's not exactly the "style" Balanchine loved but it's beautiful in it's own way. I too prefer the NYCB when it comes to Balanchine but RB does an amazing job too and I think it's nice that they do Balanchine with their own style, just a different way to interpret his choreography.
Why Thank you.. and the fact this will be aired in the movie theaters .. Kinda misrepresents the signature aesthetic of it all. I wish the repetiteurs would have them add a few Balanchine stylistic things. Like crossing the arms in front of the face when going through to fifth and opening the fingers with stronger hands. Diamonds is romantic but very strong and dramatic. This version is too soft... and its interesting.. I always thought Marianela Nunez to be a very dramatic dancer.. but i guess they were all character rolls Ive seen her in.
18:43 awwwww 😻😻😻
I have no rhythm. So this was so uncoordinated to me 😂
