Sad to think - even at modern day air shows, that when you finish that starting sequence, you may have done it for the last time - RIP, Texas Raiders and crew.
You spin these radials over on the starter before we hit the ignition. Depends on the engine and how long it’s been sitting. It’s a precaution. They can start up pretty quickly if they’ve been running and warm.
My wife's uncle flew the tail position as an E6 SSG and most-experienced gunner...that's who smart pilots put in the tail of the B-17...and why they all came home. The B-17 could be approached from its 6 in a shallow dive that eliminates the top turret and bottom turret from being able to acquire...it's just the tail gunner vs. the German fighter! ...sometimes, a pilot would kick some rudder into the plane and throw it into yaw, so a side gunner could also shoot....but, having a crackerjack tail gunner was invaluable.
I was on a flightine with 15-20 warbirds and trainers, mostly single engine, when they started turning props prior to their portion of the airshow. We we're literally in the middle of a 3X6 rectangle of mostly radial but some inline single engine aircraft with the light bombers across the taxiway finishing an interview but we stayed to shoot their taxi out and it was several really memorable minutes of smoke and fume and loud aircraft engines from all corners. The concussions from the engines shook through you. It had an aircraft carrier feel to it, them all grouped together and firing up almost all at once.
I would think you would start engines 1-2-3-4, but I believe there is a generator on #3 so they start that first for power. However, I am not sure about that. What I am sure of is SOMEONE will chime in with the correct information.
I believe batteries are on that side, so inboard engine in the right is easiest to start, once the inner right engine is started, just start the other one, then go to the inner engine on the other side.

The mechanics on this bird did a good job. Nice to see each engine start on near enough the first try.
Even from sitting here I can smell the exhaust fumes.
Still feel like I can to
I just love the sounds of radials starting in the morning.
Pass my compliments on to the maintainers, because I don't think I've ever seen one of those start that quick and smooth.
You and me both!
It averages were 3 rotations, ? Usually I count at least 7 rotations on almost all videos of the bigger planes radials startups,, 😅

We owe alot to these old birds and our heroes who flew them.
They arent old. This is current
Such a beautiful sight and sound.
There is one still airworthy and flying here in England I’m lucky to see it each flying season

Amazing 👏
Beautiful video ❤
She sounds great!
So grateful there are experts out there keeping these important pieces of history in working order.
I have surround sound on my TV and my tv has you tube if you have that crank up the volume when a B-17 of B-29 is in start up it awesome.
I just love this! It makes me smile!
Thanks for posting. We appreciate it.
i noticed all the props rotate the same direction. Does this produce the same torque experienced in single engine planes?
no
I can only imagine what 10 or more of those starting up sounded like.
Lotta really big and really angry bees
I bet it sounded like freedom
Think 1000 bomber raids😂

Loud lol
Does the b17 always start engines in the same order? if so for what reason?

It’s done just to keep each engine in check
lol I don’t know actually
@@paulthewall4764
That is correct. Number three engine provides electrical power, so it’s always started first.
B17 amooo❤❤❤Brasil
I bet that smells good 😃
Why they start engine 3 first then 4,2 and engine one last?.

Break out the hand crank. When everything else fails or as my grandfather would say situation normal all f Ed up!!
The “iron coffins”
How many are left now?
Flying or static
4 flying
Roughly 45 left in exstance
@@Silvers236 🤞 fingers crossed those four tour, for future generations sake, plus I'd love to ride in a B17 again lol
@@OldHickoryReincarnate we almost lost them last year when the fleet was grounded
@@Silvers236 I flew on Texas Raiders in 2017. Such a tragedy. I kinda figured "that was it" after that. Powers that be would ground them eternally.
last year they were grounded because of wing spar issues@@OldHickoryReincarnate
Euro 6?
Hm?
Es hat keine Schadstoffklassifizierung.. ist ja Elektroantrieb
