For me the best sounding 4 cylinders are the 2.4 L EDV/EDT I4 Turbo (SRT-4), G54B Turbo (Starion/Conquest), 4G63 Turbo (Evo's, DSM's), The Lancia Delta S4 1.8 twincharged and the Subaru EJ Turbo engines (STi's)

Fun fact, fiat was the first to create Variable valve timing (VVT). Then honda followed, along with mitsubishi and toyota.
letsroll even more fun fact than that, Fiat WASN'T the first to CREATE a variable valve timing system, they were just the first to patent a functional system for automobiles. Alfa Romeo was the first to actually use a system for production automobiles.
For me coming from the Rally side of motorsport theres just nothing that beats the sound of a turbo 4 cylinder with a big pop at the end of every shift. I like the deep, calming rumble of a idling V8 but as soon as you rev it up it sounds like farting in a tuba. I dont say others sound bad, its just that the Turbo 4 sounds best to me.
It seems like most of these cars aren't even close to stock.
Like yeah any 4 Cylinder with 10k in the motor will sound good lol.

I kinda like 1.6 - 2.0 liter engines up to about 7.5k to 8k rpm.
The fiat t jet is rather stock (second vid) I own a fiat has 76,000k miles on it and it sounds very good
4age sounds good even without open carbs.

My '09 Mazda speed 3 sounds amazing
I got a 07 Mazda 3 mps (Aussie version of yours) truly one of the best sounding 4’s on the road
My fav 4 pot from Europe is the 20VT. From Japan is the 4A-GE.
Both of them sound killer :). And they are the only engines which come with 20 valves*
*The 4A-GE has 20v only in the Silvertop and Blacktop form.

opel/vauxhal astra vxr z20leh is really beefy. absolute beast 4 cylinder.
How can you completely overlook the 2.4 litre 4 cylinder turbocharged engine from the Dodge Caliber SRT4?? Back in 2008 it was the fastest hatchback in production.

no vw gti? in my opinion besides matts goblin from demo ranch that thing has my favorite exhaust noise even with stock exhaust, adding bigger turbo makes it even better
As normal the Srt4's 2.4 Turbo A853 is left out....such an overlooked and underestimated motor and car.

pretty sad I didn't see the Evo X 4b11t on here, its a better sounding engine than the 4g63 (Evo 8 and 9 owners have told me my car sounds amazing and really deep) and alot better than most of the engines on this list

The best sounding one of all these was the Black Fiat T-jet.
4 cylinder? The size of a pepsi? Never heard of such tiny things. 6,4 liter V8 owner here.
If they want it right now, European & Japanese engineers and designers can make 4 Cylinder engines sound more intimidating than a muscular V8. My favorite 4 cylinders are F20C/F22C, K20, Civic K24, 2zz, 2zzge, 4AGE 20V, 4 Rotor Rotary, SR20 Neo VVL, KA24DE, Miata Mx5 Skyactiv, 4G63, VW Beetle Boxer, BMW 4 Cylinders, Mini Cooper 4 Cylinders, and the list can grow....
