This is the best ever video!.. This is how you give instructions! Congratulations on making a really professional video, unlike others that will tell you the story when they were born, with the video pointing to the sky or the floor.. Thanks to you, I, a non professional mechanic! was able to do a timing chain and I feel like a pro now!!! A million thanks!.. Does not get any better than this.
You prolly dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me atm then you can watch all the new series on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my brother lately xD
This video was the best video I have ever seen somebody do. I’ve never changed two time and chains on a four-cylinder Eco tech ever I just was used to working on V8. This video brought me to it gave me the confidence to do it and showed me every step of the way now my car is running again. I’m very happy I want to thank the man who did it very, very much, he should get promoted in his job and give him an extra hundred thousand a year for this awesome video thanks man I appreciate it. I forget what your name is but thank you very much. You help me a great deal now I can go back to work, thank you and I learned something from you.
Got her done, thank you guys for posting this video, I referenced it several times through the process. I have drag raced all my life and built many Pontiac V8 engines but double overhead cams are new to me. It went well, did it in the car, both chain sets at 174,000 miles with Cloyes parts, runs like a champ. Getting ready to build a 1970 455 Pontiac engine and will use Cloyes.
Superb instructional video! The only take away is the balance shaft sprocket removal. You don't need to remove the whole shaft in order to remove the sprocket.
Now this is what I expect to see when I see a tutorial video! Not some weirdo talking about his entire day or has to spend half of the video looking for parts and tools lol! Prepared, direct and efficient! Thanks for the help!!!!
I agree with pretty much everyone else, that this was a well done & helpful video. I especially like the speed up portions during the monotonous parts, while still showing what's happening.
Great video, I'm getting ready to tackle this, looks easy enough although in the car not so much, I may just pull the engine, the automatic will come up through the hood don't think the 5 speed will. I bought the Cloyes kit, thanks, you will need new crank bolt also.
This is a very nicely done video. My hats off for making it! I really like the fact that the chain has the colored links in it to help with the alinement. I am thinking this would be a hard job to do with the engine still in the car. Has anyone done it while the engine was in the car? There is not much room in there.
You did a great job explaining how to replace the timing chain. Could you tell me what the part number for the timing chain kit is that you installed in this video?
Is it necessary to remove the balance shaft? because isn't there a hole by the sprocket to put a pin or a punch to hold the teeth to remove the bolt for the balance shaft.
Can the camshaft sprockets be installed on each camshaft 180 degrees out since there is two keyways on the sprockets and cams? If your #1-cylinder piston is at TDC what clock position should your Intake lobe and Exhaust lobe be pointing when the cam sprockets are installed?
Actually 10 and 2 is approximate. When the marks on the crank drive sprocket and the two cam shaft sprockets are in the correct position to allow the timing chain to be put on with all of the marked links next to the marked locations on the sprockets, the cam sprockets will be at about 10 and 2. Sorry about the long sentence. If you line up the marks on the chain to the marks on the sprockets correctly this is actually idiot proof. The cam sprockets fit the cams in such a way that you can't put them on wrong. People get all worked up about getting this wrong when it is really a piece of cake. Just trust the marks and all will be fine. I am currently putting my daughters 2005 Pontiac Sunfire back together after changing the timing chain and sprockets and water pump. Yes, I get a little nervous too, but then I remember to trust the marks and it always works fine. Don't overthink this. Guess how I know not to overthink this?
Buenas tardes. Quité la cadena de la bomba de agua y balanceadores pero no tiene marcas. Pudieran ayudarme diciéndome cuántos eslabones hay entre marcas en la cadena de los balanceadores. Se los agradeceré, saludos.
Where can I find the torque specs for the rest of this engine? Ive got most of the engine back together but I'm having a hard time finding torque specs for the oil pan and others.
What would happen if somebody put the chain on correctly but with the cams 180° off? I noticed the lobes on those cams are 180 degrees different than the ones on mine.
I have a 2.4 ecotec 4Cyl. Timing was lined up. Rotated the crank. At what point should the timing marks realign itself before I started turning the engine.
Would be the same if the chain had broke, just get the cams and crank in the correct position, as shown in the video. Recheck the timing marks after the new chain is in, and rotate the engine through at least a few full revolutions by hand when you're done.
But make sure that your cyl 1 is not in TDC or you might bend some valves. If you want you can turn the crank 180 degree then all the pistons is in the middle of their cylinders, then turn your camshafts to the right position and then turn the crank another 180 degree to make cylinder 1 in TDC and you should be fine. I know you probably already got your car done but it might be nice to know for others facing that problem too.
The marks are there to help assist you with the installation . No you don’t have to line up the links if you choose not to, as long as the cam and crank is correctly timed.
How many revolutions will it take to get the gold link back inline with the intake sprocket mark? I've turned 4 revolutions and the intake and exhaust are at 10 and 2 but the chain links aren't in same position. I'm assuming as long as sprockets are at 10 and 2 at tdc all is well???
theres no official mileage recommendation, but if your chain is making noises when you start the car, it might be a good idea to get it replaced with the guides and a new tensioner.
Dear Mary, Do you mean: VVT or non VVT? By the way, VVT stands for "Variable Valve Timing". An "interference" is when "pistons hit valves". You'll notice it when you're manually turning the crankshaft balancer after installing those "timing chains", (No belt chain). It's an unusual sound.
Damm don’t even think about Rotating those cams , just remove the chain guides the chain will be loose enough to remove without having to turn the exhaust cam a single centimeter
One way for sure is to do a compression test and a cylinder leak down test or you might be able to use a small borescope through the spark plug hole to see any marks on the piston from where it had contacted the valves.
tomorrow i will be putting on the replacement timing chain. but i think i made a mistake i would really like if anyone would help me fix this mistake if i have made one please and thanks. i forgot to check the top gears to make sure their timed before i took the gears off so how do i go back and fix it? before i put all the new parts on.
Hi I know this comment is from 2 years ago but did you ever solve your problem and if so what did you do? My timing chain broke so I’m not sure exactly how I’m supposed to get my cams on the exhaust stroke
4:43 Can anyone tell me a part number or what the part is called for the plate that holds the balance shaft in mine broke and I cant find a replacement one online but I don't have a part number or the actual name of it.
Interference engines are so friggin' stupid. Ford redesigned theirs in the mid 80's and made a piston change. I think it's all a gimmick to make the shops money. Poor, poor design.
Extremely helpful, I myself am a mechanic but I can never find such specific and detailed instructions especially timing marks thank you

Perfect video guys. Will be using this shortly to put my built motor back together!

Cody thank you for the awesome video. God bless you man.
You did a great job explaining how to replace the timing chain. Could you tell me what the part number for the timing chain kit is that you installed in this video?
6 years later I want some videos on how to build a performance 2.4 round D round racing!!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
You don't need to deactivate the tensioner before installing it. I've installed it several times on the activated state and tight it in
Is it necessary to remove the balance shaft? because isn't there a hole by the sprocket to put a pin or a punch to hold the teeth to remove the bolt for the balance shaft.
Can the camshaft sprockets be installed on each camshaft 180 degrees out since there is two keyways on the sprockets and cams? If your #1-cylinder piston is at TDC what clock position should your Intake lobe and Exhaust lobe be pointing when the cam sprockets are installed?

Great video just hate that gm was like, "let's not make an actual reference for the cam gears. Just say about 10 and 2 o clock."
Actually 10 and 2 is approximate. At what mileage are the 2.2s required for service on the timing components
What would happen if somebody put the chain on correctly but with the cams 180° off? I noticed the lobes on those cams are 180 degrees different than the ones on mine.
My crankshaft sprocket does not slide on that easy. Can I buy a gear installer to install the sprocket?
if the chain tensioner wasnt activated after installation is it still possible to activate it?
I have a 2.4 ecotec 4Cyl. Timing was lined up. Rotated the crank. At what point should the timing marks realign itself before I started turning the engine.
Where can we locate camshaft sensor on this non vvt engine?
great job guys
Any notable differences for an LSJ?
What die size do you use to remove the upper tensioner?
What if I removed the chain without it being in the right position? Also I removed the camshafts, I'm changing the head gasket and rockers
Would be the same if the chain had broke, just get the cams and crank in the correct position, as shown in the video. Recheck the timing marks after the new chain is in, and rotate the engine through at least a few full revolutions by hand when you're done.

What is the significant about the marks on the timing chain? Will it be out of time if they are not aligned?
The marks are there to help assist you with the installation . No you don’t have to line up the links if you choose not to, as long as the cam and crank is correctly timed.
Can you post links for parts

I had the same question and you answered it. Cheers
She doesn't explain the primary chain tensioner activation, why didunt she display activation on bench instedd of hidden behinde Engunn ¿¿¿¿
One of the torque screws broke what do I do?
Good video
At what millage should this chain be replaced
theres no official mileage recommendation, but if your chain is making noises when you start the car, it might be a good idea to get it replaced with the guides and a new tensioner.
MrPuddinJones I know the guides are notorious for breaking on these chevy engines

I have a 2004 Saturn L300 W1 ecotec 2.2. Is this a interference or non interference engine. Also is this a belt or chain?

Is it an interference engine
Once the timing marks are set up are they not checked again after engine rotation?

I have a question
Should threadlocker be used on the bolts??
I highly recommend that especially the bolts holding those chain guides.
is that the same as a Saab 9-3 2.0t 2005???? Please need to know..
Why would it be?

How do I know if my pistons hit valves? Have exactly same engine. Help

One way for sure is to do a compression test and a cylinder leak down test or you might be able to use a small borescope through the spark plug hole to see any marks on the piston from where it had contacted the valves.
