    I spent years learning painting with an instructor and he never told me why he used orange and white to have a highlight for a red base color!!! He rubbed me out of money and never let me become independent. To the extent that I just gave up painting because I didn't understand how to mix colors! 😠😠😠😠 I didn't go to a painting school and didn't even know that color theory books existed. I always thought it was just talent and I didn't have all the necessary talent for painting! I can't believe the theory is so simple and now everything makes sense.
    Thank you very much for this video. I want to go back to painting again and this video gave me a lot of hope. It was amazing. I will subscribe to your website as well. I need all the lessons. Thank youuuu.

    These theories and practices literally took two years of me being in college to grasp from tone, hue, shade, chroma, highlights, mixing colors, making black, matching colors and mastering the color wheel. As a student the instructor gives you these odd assignments to make studies and grades you on your ability to apply previous studies to the current studies, but you never really see how they go together until you take a painting course or photography course in portraiture. You'd think they would shorten the time but a college student can not truly appreciate their learning experience if it were so streamlined. Thank you.

  • @PaintBasket
    @PaintBasket  13 лет назад

    @Sarandib22 yes it presumes you have a natural "white" light source. If you have a light source that is tinted, the tint colour - in your case neon green - would affect each colour (mid, highlight & shadow. You would mix your paints as though a natural light source is lighting the subject, then either:
    Paint the scene with those colours and add a colour wash over the painting using the tint of the actual light source or:
    add some of the tint colour to each mix before you start painting.

      there is no secret recipe for realistic flesh tone as everybody's skin tone is different, then you also have the various ethnicities, etc which have an effect too. I do however have a portrait painting course where I show how to mix and match any skin tone under the sun on our website : www.paintbasket.com/paintbaskettv/?stream=class-list&medium=oils&subject=portraiture

      I paint miniatures, and have been chasing a "blue/purple" kind of for a themed Warhammer army named "Indigo Children", have got close but have not been able to nail the highlights without going dull or chalky, so thank you. Is there an easy way to tell which way an existing blue or red say is biased? I have heard this can effect the mixes going muddy or gray, as i work with premixed paints, miniature paints tend to have super fine pigment, perhaps i would be better of with a standard set of Red, Blue and Yellow? That colour buster is calling to me!!!

    Nicely presented! I just wanted to add a little to what was said at 1:27, "it reflects its own color". Technically speaking it should be said "it reflects all color projected on the object that the object is not". Suppose the color temperature emitting from a source to a ball is in the range of what we call white light and the ball reflects red light back to your eye. Then naturally we say the "ball is red" but technically speaking we are saying it backwards. For example, suppose the light emitted is within the blue color temperature range. So what color would a red ball (under white light) look like if blue light was projected on it? The answer is black. My point being that the color of an object that we perceive with our eye is actually not that color, instead the object is every color of the emitted light incident on the object except the color that is reflected. Therefore the object is actually the negative of the color it is reflecting. However, it would be odd if someone was asked another " what color is your new car?" and the response was "my car is every color but blue if under a green light" or "my car reflects the color red when white light is projected on it". Like I mentioned, the video was nicely presented. I know this is a painting tutorial so my comment may be somewhat irrelevant to those less interested in the physics of light. I just wanted to share a token of light theory that fascinates me and something others might find interesting.

      +J. Justin Garcia The chemical element or compound painted on the object controls the color that is reflected into our eye. Here is a link to an informal website if anyone want to learn more: www.jcsparks.com/painted/pigment-chem.html

Thank you so much :) Btw I bought your colour buster tool today and am looking forward to using it. Also love hearing a South African accent on youtube ;)

    This is a explanation the colour wheel and tone. Thank you

  • @PaintBasket
    @PaintBasket  12 лет назад

    lighter refers to the tonal value (how light or dark a colours is), brighter refers to how intense / vibrant the colour is. You would make a colour lighter by adding white. You would make a colour brighter by adding first it own colour back into the mix, then the next colour up on the colour wheel
