I never cleaned the chrome tips for my range rover in last 8 years and they were in pretty rough shape. This thing cleaned everything right off and the tips look brand new!!
Thanks for this tip brother. I have a Volvo S90 and it took no longer than 5 minutes to bring those exhaust tips to a brilliant chrome shine. Cost me 5 minutes and $3.00 for a bottle of that stuff which looks like it will last a lifetime. I've seen recommendations from detailers using steel wool, expensive chemicals, drills with sanders, etc. This worked for me; cheap and quick. Thanks again!
my exhaust tips haven’t been cleaned in 10 years because of the previous owner and they’re dirty asl and I tried steel wool and that barely does anything
I recommend P21S Metal Polishing soap or P21S Finish Restorer. It will get better results much faster. The Bar Keeper's stuff is more readily available and is probably good enough for regular maintenance.
I love Bar Keeper's Friend for a lot of tasks. It cleans burned stains out of Corning Ware cookware (cassarole pans) really well if you use them in a really hot oven and meat juices get burned on. By the way, TFLnow, I love your local hardware store! Hard to find a store like that nowadays. I so want to go right out to the garage right now and try this on my 2007 VW Jetta Fahrenheit's pipes. They're black as coal - never been cleaned in 12 years, so you shouldn't feel too badly about only three years! Thanks for this video! And very interesting input from your friend, the mechanic in this video, so I thank him too.
I love Bar Keepers Friend for cleaning stainless steel pots, pans, and sink. The oxalic acid in it is kind of harsh (dry peeling hands) so I recommend wearing rubber gloves when you use it. I do.
Here’s what I’ve used on my ‘15 with great success. It’s called Mr.Metal. It’s a white cream very similar to what you used. The added benefit is that it has a protectant/wax in it that will help against further corrosion and help bead water, etc. I used a dot or two on an old microfiber towel and “floss” each tip. They always look better than new.
About 2 decades ago I experimented with a grill cleaner on my exhaust tips, inside and out, it worked wonders. Sprayed it on the outside and inside and let it sit. Most of the buildup simply dripped off on its on. Then used a simple rag to wipe, wash, and wipe again. Looked brand new.
Yeah, my 2013 F150 Ecoboost does the same thing to the tip. I finally just got a new tip... It's a black powder coat dual outlet tip.. Looks much better and no need to try to keep it 'clean' now.
the boost may have something to do with the extra carbon, but VW's and audis have catalyst emissions control systems that work differently than the exhaust re-burn systems in every other car. the owners manual mentions some of the extra maintenance their emissions systems require, especially as they get older.
Bring that awesome car by the garage and we can get to it with some Wizards polish. How about a full detail? I still have some Adams ceramic coat. Just did the MINI for winter and it turned out awesome! Love to have you guys back! Franny
I recently cleaned and polished the exhaust tips on a Ford edge with a ecoboost engine. The tips looked to be in a similar condition as yours. I used Garry Dean chrome cream and I got them near perfect in less than 10 minutes per tip.
I scrub the tips on my F150 Lariat with diet coke and a wad of aluminum foil when things get this bad (or worse). After the coke/aluminum treatment, I'll follow up with soft scrub. Then rinse with water and dry with a microfiber. They come out looking brand new every time.
Thank you thank you thank you!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my tips clean on my MK7.5 GTI and have been failing miserably. My friend told me the only option I had was to buy carbon fiber tip covers. So I made one last ditch effort to look on RUclips. I can’t wait to run to Home Depot later to see if I can find this stuff. Thanks again! Btw, I’m a fellow Washingtonian too. 😊
Toothpaste works well. Using COLGATE - you get a ring of confidence! Toothpaste is a very fine abrasive. Cleans light paint scratches, plastic headlight covers.
i just got a gti and i’m cleaning it and getting it all good looking and saw ur plate covers and i did in fact used to live in puyallup and i feel like that’s funny
LOL, I was wondering about the Washington Plates with the CU Buffs sticker. An hour and 1/2! OMG. No wonder they look so clean! But I guess that is a really long time since you cleaned them. I was in my garage and spent about 4 or 5 minutes using some blue Windshield washer fluid and a rag and mine came out pretty good. I'll probably pick some of this up though. Thanks for the "tips". PS. Boost Creep is where I got my car Dyno'd a few years back!
I bought a used car that had them from factory, looked like they never had been clean, I used some simple green with a scotch brite kitchen sponge, clean them right up, then applied some metal polish, and viola, back to normal. Pretty easy job, with a little added elbow grease.
Looks amazing. I like the P21S polishing soap for the heavy soiled tips or the P21S total auto wash. A clean exhaust tip makes a massive difference and if you want the easiest way to maintain them after a polishing is use a ceramic coating like CQuartz UK and they will be SUPER easy to keep looking clean and shinny
I just bought a BMW X3 2019 and i hate the chrome tail pipes, so i decided to take them off and spray them gloss black with the proper heat resistant paint...BUT i have discovered, they are fixed -welded on, not bolted like previous X3s i have had....what a f'king pain!
Cool video but thought it was a bit weird to go to a construction store instead of an automotive store. But that's just my professional opinion. But the solution worked!!! Unfortunately though, he could have grabbed something that could have left scoring and peel the outer fish on the exhaust tips. Very glad it worked out for him and the car!!!
No Gloves?! I used the powdered version and it explicitly said don't get it on your skin. Now that this video is almost 2 yrs old did you find a better product to clean the carbon off or keep it off?
CLR 50/50 solution will cut your time drastically & much less need for scrubbing. It will cut through it all, I've used it on my exhaust tips and by far the best thing to dates.
No fume oven cleaner. Hit them after you drive, let it sit for a bit then go at it with a magic eraser. Once clean of carbon and gunk, polish with some metal polish. Once completely clean use GYEON Q2 RIM to coat them. Carbon will wipe right off. Have had plenty of boosted cars and this combo works great.
the bottom of mine were impossible to clean normally. Over the years they have been sand blasted rough so the carbon sticks solid. A wet sand with 800, 1200 then polish to mirror finish
The chrome tip on my F-150 would more build up on it than the ones in this video. Very busy at work, but I would wash my truck once a week, as long as it wasn’t going to rain. Tried everything to get the black, burnt on residue off with no avail. Then, looking in a cabinet in my garage, I grabbed a can of a product and said to myself, “Let’s see if this works!”. Sprayed it all over the chrome tip and let it sit for around 15-20 minutes. Couldn’t believe how clean the chrome came out. Took a little bit of time to get the bottom clean, but not nearly as long as it took in this video. It’s a little messy, but I’ve tried so many products and haven’t seen anything that cleaned the chrome like this. One of these days I’m going to make a video of it and post it. Incredible how clean it got with not too much work. Sometimes I just use a couple of paper towels to clean it. You can’t use steel wool or something like that, it’s too abrasive and will scratch the chrome. People are probably wondering what it is. I should make the video to show what I use.
chandler sturgis exactly what I used. I tried everything and nothing worked bc previous owner never cleaned the tips. Came out perfect. Next week I’ll do it one more time and finish with some metal polish and seal it.
chandler sturgis how do I clean it with steel wool? Can I use the product he mentioned and steel wool instead of the sponge ? Just bought the product, will that clean it better?
Maddie Denox is suggest both if you have already bought the product. Steel wool helps to remove tuff stock on grease, rust spots, etc. just rub it across any chrome
Thanks for the, uhm, tip. I'm scared of scratching the chrome but can't drive around with these dirty tips (previous owner clearly didn't care at all).
The cleaning starts at 6:00 , thank me later
Haha, I was thinking the same thing. Lots of foreplay.
Thank you later

For the grimey bits underneath use a scourer which has been used and nearly ready to throw out so it is not too abrasive
Its visible that you put alot of work into the making of this video. Good work, jeep it up.

SOS pads work great, I didn’t do mine for like 6 years, and they cleaned right up.
Great tip thanks! I’m constantly trying to keep the nice shiny exhaust clean on my focus ST.
Nice to see Harvey!
Steel wool is all you need . Grade #0000
You’re welcome
Edgar Diaz that’s what we use at the detail shop
Exactly that and a metal polish
Edgar Diaz does that affect burnt tips?

I have a Focus ST with a Borla exhaust. I have to clean the tips every time I wash the car, otherwise they start to look like your GTI tips.
Two things: Never Dull works great for this and never let them get this dirty!
Autosol is great for getting Gti exhausts nice and clean, I have a Mk7 Gti and use this regularly to get the edge of the tips clean from the carbon.
