Crew add personal touch on HMS Mersey's dazzling makeover and revamp

- Painstaking work and hundreds of litres of paint have gone into the creation of the dazzling new colour scheme of HMS Mersey.
Currently housed in the dry dock at Falmouth, Cornwall, the Royal Navy's River-class offshore patrol vessel is the last of her kind class to have the Western Approaches colour scheme applied to her exterior.
The colour scheme is a nod to history, replicating specific patterns applied to ships during the Second World War, particularly those involved in convoy duty in the North Atlantic - and it's all being painted by hand.

the razzle dazzle is quite spectacular, indeed
Great having the crew involved. Good sense of ownership for all the young sailors.
They got a discount for supplying their own labour and they're already paying the sailors soight as well put them to work. Lol. Im surprised there's no rainbows.
After taking part in the overhaul, the crew will also have better understanding of how the systems work, not just what they do.
Probably get posted somewhere else right after though.
@@airhabairhab Heh. Sounds about right. 😎
Don't paint over the parking sensors. Add a little more pink too!
Those rainbow colors represents the royal navy perfect.
Looks great! Well done to all concerned!!!
Nice to see Uckers is still played in the Navy.
it's just another mixie blob on the uckers board of life
H.M.S. Dragon has a Welsh Dragon on it's bow, H.M.S. Liverpool should have a Liverbird.
That would be nice, but I can see a small problem with that...
A pair of hub caps
@@Flappatackle What's that?
@@danielkrcmar5395 There is no HMS Liverpool..🤭
@@Flappatackle Haha my bad. I meant H.M.S. Mersey
She is now the same colour of the Atlantic overcast sky above my house today, will disappear into the horizon beautifully. A shame paint can't deflect Radar.
Ahh but it can!
Its OK, the earths curvature sorts that out in a very short distance. All the scientists say so.
Drones often fly by sight
It’s a very nice little boat with one tiny little gun on it.
If you look I think it's in Cammel lairds 😮
This beautiful boat is docked right outside my balcony - has been there before Christmas and was positively surprised when it was here when I came back, pretty sure there's a pilot boat or something in front of HMS Mersey but not too sure
Hang on
Fantastic paint job.
Walls? Surely he means bulkheads!!
He is speaking simply for our sake...Doctors and scientists do it too.
As a crude American, I’m appreciating the closed captioning. 😊
I think what you need is a rainbow down the side
Nice one!. Nuff said!.
These were leased when first commissioned. Are they now owned outright?
@43 sec what is the symbol just above the draft marks ? Looks like a 5 without its top.
A warning the ship has a protruding bow under the water.
All RN ships should be painted in WA dazzle…..just because it’s much cooler than boring drab grey….and it’s got a great heritage behind it.
Freak'n Silly Fan-boy Tosh, it means nothing in the age of advance radars and sensors ! 😏
Did I say it had any real purpose in the age of “radars & sensors”? No. What did I actually say? ….better than grey primer….looks cool (IMHO), great heritage (that we should be proud - my Dad was a Royal Marine gunner in the RN and took part in several Russian and Malta convoys) not sure why my comment was so irritating to you? A “fanboy” of Western Approaches dazzle - yes I proudly am.
@@mikesaunders4694 Be proud and relax we all had family that served in WWll I had four and one died and that's not the issue. My issue is it's a waste of money on this ship. I served from 1978'-1986' our Navy is building the wrong ships , I could write a hundred pages on this but way bother ! There is little money for the RN, Politicians always change things over the years the MOD/RN make very poor ship choices and personal levels are terrible. We could never do a "Falklands" today !! And both new carriers have had embarrassing prop shaft issues and this is after all the Daring DDG engine issues !!! Not much to be proud off at all
@@ronniefarnsworth6465 I don’t disagree with any of your points and a lot more besides but a bit of paint is a drop in the ocean. 😉
@@mikesaunders4694 Okay man, Peace ✌
Hopefully they will upgrade her weapons. Better mine & submarine capabilities and better anti-drone / missile defenses. The ' dazzle' camouflage will be of use against small boats, that typically don't have good radar or sonar.
It's purpose is fishery protection or stopping smuggling, it's not a front line warship! The problem is putting it in situations it shouldn't be in because the Navy is told to do too much. They're fine for anti-smuggling yet not big enough for the Falklands or the Gulf.
Back out for operations …in a few months time ?.. come on we need everybody out there as soon as we can
1:29 Does my stern look fat in this paint scheme?
Not a chance Portsmouth
Let’s hope it doesn’t have a mishap like 2 of its pals 😂
I was worried, it looks OK - Could have been a lot worse, if you know what I mean.
On January 16, 2024, the Deputy Russian Defense Minister revealed the number of warships and military equipment that the Russian Navy received in service in 2023. The new equipment included over 7,7 thousand units of weapons of destruction, including long-range sea-based cruise missiles Kalibr, Uranus and Zircon.
The Russian military-industrial complex supplied the Russian Navy with seven warships, including the frigate Admiral Golovko, as well as the corvettes Rezky and Mercury.
The newest frigate Admiral Golovko completed state tests in December and entered service with the Russian Northern Fleet in the 43rd Division of missile ships, where the frigates of the same type Admiral Gorshkov and Admiral Kasatonov are already serving. Admiral Golovko is the second frigate of the Project 22350. It is the first ship in the series with an entirely Russian power plant. Its armament includes Kalibr cruise missiles, possibly Zircon missiles, A-192 130 mm artillery launcher, Poliment-Redut air defense system, Paket anti-submarine defense complex, Palash anti-aircraft rocket-gun complex, Ka-27PL helicopter.
In 2023, the Russian Navy was also reinforced with three submarines:
- multipurpose nuclear submarine “Krasnoyarsk” of the “Yasen-M” project;
- the strategic nuclear submarine missile cruiser “Emperor Alexander III”. The warship completed state tests, the final stage of which was the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, in November 2023;
- the large submarine Mozhaisk entered service with the Russian Pacific Fleet in November 2023.
In addition, the Russian Navy has been reinforced with small missile ships Naro-Fominsk and Cyclone, and the minesweeper Lev Chernavin.
Also, the patrol ship “Intrepid” was returned to combat duty after repairs.
Over the past year, Russian industry enterprises supplied the Navy with 33 raid and multi-purpose boats and support vessels, 11 aircraft and helicopters of naval aviation, in particular, long-range anti-submarine aircraft, multi-purpose fighters, ship transport, combat and anti-submarine helicopters.
Where are the bright coloured trans and pride flags on the outside? This will deter the Houthis...
Took the words outta my mouth.😂
Stupidity comes in all shapes and forms. One is in this comment you’ve typed, this is called dazzle camo it deliberately confuses the enemy, if I see one more comment of “oH tHiS cAmO lOoKs WoKe” I’m gonna lose it.
@@chrisbacon3071 Take a chill pill Bill.
That would be great! We don't want to be one of those dopey backwards nations that despise minorities do we?
@@danielkrcmar5395 I'd be annoyed too, these idiots are so obsessed with a certain minority group that whenever they see any splash of colour they associate it with a pride flag...
I thought Royal Navy ships are supposed to have a huge hole in the side, I mean I saw one the other day that looked decidedly ‘holey’
At least the shaft had a good servicing
That is correct it allows enemy ordanace to pass straight through without hitting anything. The Royal Navy as you correctly point out are the only Navy in the world to employ this tactic. Thank you for your particularity in pointing this out to everyone. ALL other navies in the world don't normally have holes in the sides of their ships unless they are sinking, as I think you already know!
Hms double entendre
Batch 2s look a lot better.
Simple question…why do this?
I swear to God if I see another comment calling this dazzle camouflage “woke” I’m gonna lose it.
Oh shut up
@@daviecrocket9160 make me? Oh wait you can’t, so no.
Dazzle was a lot more butch back in my day.
There are some very stupid people out there. Most don't know what woke means. Most don't know that the concept keeps them safe and free.
They don't know any history.
I'm surprised it wasn't painted in rainbow colours in the name of Diversity and Inclusion.
Don't give them any more ideas.

Can they not design them to work in the English Channel, they are badly needed !
They do work there. But I am not sure we blow up people in rubber dinghies ...
looks lame, those are supermarket colours
Joke? Right?
Waste of money on a worthless small ship of little military value for the RN ! 🤔
Do they not teach officers how to speak properly at Dartmouth anymore? "Vee Western Approaches scheme". And no, it isn't an accent. It is sloppy. The Scottish rating spoke better.
Stopped watching when the box ticking started.
Will it come with reversing mirrors for the berthing procedures? 😂😂😂🤣 Why do have this ship if it can’t even patrol the English Channel for migrant boats?
😂
Jeeez ... There is always one .... 🤦♂
What a total WASTE OF MONEY! Paint it grey it's WARSHIP not an advert for the woke!
Given the RN's recruitment problems, a little money used to enhance pride in the ship and make life aboard a bit more enjoyable is very well spent.
its camo
it needed to be repainted anyways
Oh right them green bits will blend in lovely with the grass, bushes and trees you get at sea!@@ScratchyYard
What does "Woke" mean anyway? And why "woke"? The commentary explained it was a copy of the camouflage system used in the North Atlantic in WW2.
What a waste of tax payers money 🤬
It's part of routine scrape & repaint anyway so where's the waste of money?
So gay, suppose it is the navy so to be expected
so the sailors who Faught in the north Atlantic, in the same colour scheme where gay and wok ,,don't think so ,, its camo,,
Go back under your rock.
Did you try it on with all of them? Impressive @@olly31d13
FunFact: When this camo was used in a war the term 'gay' meant 'happy'.
How can paint be gay,it has no gender.
Would the money for the paint job not be better spent on recruitment, given the state of our navy ?
Next week it’s rainbow paint job to satisfy the government.
