  • Hard Sand
Thank you Phil for requesting this video. He writes:
'Hi Glen & Steve, any chance of a video on how to get out of a green-side bunker under the following conditions:
sand is not dry but 'gluey', after heavy rain
    bunker has a hard base
particularly when the pin is short-sided
I find that I regularly middle the ball in these conditions and either stay in the bunker or hit it over the green. Should I be using a club with less bounce than I normally would eg change from a sand wedge to a lob wedge to get it out properly?'
Well, we haven't covered that 'gluey' bunker in this video, one for the future.
Firm or wet sand often confuses golfers, because the normal rules don't apply.
Our normally effective technique out of the sand, would be to play with plenty of bounce (sole) on the sand wedge. We might lay the clubface back or even open it up some.
However, with a firm base under the ball, you're likely to 'bounce' off that surface and into the ball! You're now flying right over the green!
Glen shows you a couple of options, which help you to understand the nuances of different sand, and to get out first time.
Many bunkers vary in sand depth, texture and resistance, so it's important to treat each bunker shot on its merits. Be prepared for whatever the golf course can throw at you.

    Golf Coaches, Not Teachers
The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.
Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!
    Skill Development vs Technical Changes
Although technique is an important factor of a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice protocols.
    External Focus of Attention
Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common instruction includes advice such us increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These factors of the golf swing, are considered important for many golfers and teachers. However, as they are focused internally, on body movements, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.
Enter the world of External Focus of Attention. This means that a golfer focuses on the target, the ball, the clubhead - objects which are external to the body. The sciences involving Motor Skill Learning have proven that by employing an External Focus of Attention, sports men and women learn new moves more quickly, retain changes readily and can perform better under pressure.
All of the Aussie Golf Pros coaching, drills and advice for clients and viewers, involve an External Focus of Attention and the results can be astonishing!

Very clever! I only use higher bounce wedges so have to hit down on it out of firm traps, which helps.. but the heel first technique you mentioned gives it that much needed higher ball flight. Thanks!

Best tip I’ve seen…taking the heel of the club into the sand first… oh how I’ve struggled with hard sand; most city courses do not have very much sand therefore they are usually hard pan

Excellent video on hard or compacted bunkers shots Glen! Since I play publinx courses, sand maintenance is not a priority; so, I find myself hitting a lot of these kind of shots. I do use the sand wedge as you suggested and PW or nine iron for longer shots. I'll definitely instill this into my subconscious for later retrieval.

Played on a course with hard compacted sand. Was doing well until I hit my first bunker on the 16th. I’d never faced one and was clueless. The squared face makes perfect sense. Wish I thought of that when I was playing.

I've developed a similar type shot as we have alot of wet bunkers in ireland. I lay it open. Lower my hands to get the loft pointing at the target and also have some shaft lean. Throw the heel into the sand. My wide sole k grind vokey kicks into play and lofts the ball out high and soft.

Hey Glen, Thanks for the video just a question, ball position for these shots? The same for a normal bunker shot?
    Cheers

OzCats Yes Joe. I normally place the ball just forward in my stance for bunker shots, or opposite my heart. It is definitely further away from me. Thanks for watching.
