The 2006-2008 code favored bars gymnasts. For example: there was no other even where a gymnast would score above a 16.5 with a bad routine. Some even got 17.1s (domestic scoring), but bars was given too much credit and I think if they had been in the 2009-2012 or 2013-2016 code, Shawn would've won because they realized their mistakes in making bars too high scoring.
i might be wrong but it's not that bar skills were rated at a higher value, it's just that they counted the top 10 skills instead of the 8 that they do now

it ALWAYS and STILL drives me absolutely crazy that people consider a gymnast least difficult routine/exercise as their weakest event, Shawn was BEYOND clean, like it was said not her most difficult but definitely A LOT cleaner than most of the difficult bar routines
If you have an event with significantly less difficulty than your other events then it IS your weakest event. Doesn’t matter how clean you are. Nastia’s weakest event was vault even though she had really clean form because that difficulty was the best she could do.
Nastia's start value is much higher than Shawn's. Nastia's start value on bars is 7.7 and Shawn's is 6.3. The start value is added to the execution score (out of a ten). So Nastia's start value was 7.7 and her execution score was 9.4 I believe so they add those twp scores together to get the final score of 17.1. Likewise, Shawn's start value was 6.3 and her execution was 9.1 so they add those two scores together to get 15.4. I hope this helped!
Gabby would've scored way higher on bars than 2008 Shawn, a fair amount higher on vault, and only slightly lower on beam and floor. Only reason 2008 Shawn doesn't beat her is because of her weak bars, mid-upper 14s only in the 2009-12 cop...
she does a double twisting double layout if she has that much power wouldn't it be possible for her to do a double layout off of the beam? i always wondered if someone could do that, i mean i know the beam doesn't give you very much spring, but it is already 4 foot off the ground which should make up for the lack of power off the beam any one know if someone has done a double layout off of the beam?
@Elle23345 Yeah I agree, I mean she probably could up it, but Shawn never fell off bars with this routine. I think it was better for her to have a clean consistent routine, something gymnasts need to know when to do (Mustafina's Amanar for instance).
Shawn would have been great in compulsories I think. She really tried hard to keep clean form in all of her events, especially on bars. The splits on beam and floor were a problem for her though.
I think she never upped the difficulty because she doesn't really like or feel comfortable on this event. I believe she has said this was her least favorite apparatus.
@moopoo66 nastia's start value on beam is only three tenths lower than shawn's Nastia's is 6.7 shawn's is 7.0 and there is a flaw in your logic just because somebody has a higher difficulty on an event does not mean they're better. Beth Tweddle had a 7.8 start value on bars, but nobody thought that she was better than He Kexin or nastia, because high difficulty does not mean you're the best, especially if you have Beth tweddle's horrible form
