This was a great Arsenal display. Mertesacker was immense- true and last testament to his legendary defending, and the new formation with three at the back set up by Wenger at the end of 2016/2017 was a huge innovation for a man who had always believed in four at the back, and it worked miraculously in saving their defence as well as delivering Arsenal and him a record FA Cup trophy. Arsenal’s run to FA Cup glory in 2017 was extraordinary- beating Man City and Chelsea in the finals was an extraordinary feat for a team that was otherwise poor in the domestic and European leagues. This was a happy day for all those associated with Arsenal. Maybe Wenger should have left then which would have spared him and Arsenal the embarrassing 2017/2018 (though he did win the Community Shield, another favourite trophy of Wenger’s) but he was destined to win one last FA Cup and establish himself as the Invincible King of the world’s oldest football trophy. Au revoir, Arsène. This will live long as one of your greatest achievements, among many others.
