HEY!! If you liked this video, I have some more for you! I just finished my new album, Lavender! You can check it out on all streaming platforms, linked here: braelenaddison.hearnow.com/
Hey cuties! Thank you for all the kind words. Now is an unprecedented time for us all, and it makes me so happy to see your positivity and camaraderie. Music is meant to be shared, and in the coming future, I hope to be working on all sorts of new projects! My college semester is coming to an end, and I am looking forward to putting more videos like this one together. Stay safe out there. Best wishes, -Brae
Guitar/Bass tip: The Strokes don't do up and down strokes all together, it is always down strokes ... it totally changes the feel. Great cover by the way! Really loved it!
You discovered it at just the right time, I just put out my third album! I am so proud of this one, I think you will be too. braelenaddison.hearnow.com/
One of the best complements I could receive. Thank you! I quite enjoyed mixing this one. I'm working on my third album currently, and I hope it will sound even better!
Dear Braelen. That was awesome !!!!!!!! Really awesome. I know I should sort this out by myself but I'm actually a newbie in sequencing... and even have no idea about percussion haha. But what kind of samples did you use? I'm trying to cover this same song and have been struggling a bit int his regard. Thanks !
Hey! Sorry for the late reply, hope this finds you well. I am happy to answer questions!! I actually just bought a rewiring tool for my DAW that will allow me to record the audio directly into OBS. I'll be doing some breakdowns of my own songs that will help shed light on my process in the coming future. Onto your sequencing question... This one was difficult to get right. Thankfully, the intro of the song is just the drum sequencing. A very handy tip is to use reference songs when you're doing music work. This mainly applies for doing A/B comparisons for mixing or mastering, but in this case, I dropped an mp3 version from Spotify into my DAW to listen to where the drums were placed. I use Studio One Artist, and for the kick sound, I used Impact XT. I am totally in love with that drum machine, there are so many samples in there. Funny story, I've actually fully produced and mixed two records (links in description) with stock plugins. I'm in college, I bought it for $50 for the .edu pricing. You can make the most out of what you have if you apply yourself fully and balanced. Drum sequencing specifics: Kick drum on 1 and 3. Standard. Snare on 2 and 4. For the snare sample, I have a Roland Juno DS61 that has really fantastic drum sounds. I used a snare from that, but you could use anything. The most important part is the way you process your samples. Never forget to EQ to subtract unwanted frequencies, then go back in and gently add the stuff that really makes those sounds pop. High end in the snare, for example. The tricky part with the snare sound, is that there's actually a reverse thing going on that makes it move. I just reversed the snare sample, and put it on the off beat right after 1 and 3. It makes the snare more satisfying. Hi-hat on the offbeat of 1 and 2. Rest. Offbeat of 1 and 2. Rest. Lastly, I did this ride/ride reverse thing again, same technique as the hi-hat. Just reverse the audio clip. The actual ride hit is on the offbeat of 4. The reverse I placed ending on beat 4. So it would go reverse ride, into the actual hit. Hope this helped! It is this the entire song.
Thank you! And are you referring to the drum pads? It's an Akai MPK Mini, a MIDI controller. I use it to interface with my DAW in order to play drum samples.
Thanks! I used the same vocal processing throughout the song, following my typical effects chain with some minor changes. It goes like this: First EQ, always subtractive -> High pass, thin Q on resonant peaks. I always thinly scoop around 400hz to remove boxiness/mud. Mild compressor, maybe 2.5:1 or so. Just to tame dynamics. !Most Important! A fuzz distortion of some sort. Mild, and not too overpowering. Give it some drive. Listen to VOX in the mix while you're making adjustments. If you solo it, it might sound like too much fuzz, but in the mix it really cuts through. That's what makes The Strokes vocals sound like The Strokes. Second EQ, this one for subtle additive work. Maybe a De-esser after the fact. Could also throw on a limiter if you need more volume.
Thank you so much! The drums were from Studio One's Impact instrument as well as some foley sounds from my Roland Juno DS61. The sounds themselves were mediocre, but with a bit of processing you can do a lot with stock drums.
@@elihudehesagonzalez6213 I'd be happy to help. I don't have access to the project file anymore, but I'm certain the sound is either an open high hat or a ride cymbal with a short sustain. The effect is straight forward. You can take any old cymbal sound and reverse it. DAWs have this feature built in, for me I just click an option and it reverses the sound. If you want to do a little sound designing to get the reverse ramp sounding good, you could also put a reverb on your sound before you reverse it. It's a pretty common technique for building risers. Let me know if you have any other questions and I hope this helps!
Thank you! I believe I touched on this in another comment, but along with my standard vocal chain with EQ and compression, distortion/saturation is how you achieve this tone. The Strokes use this all over the place, giving it their signature vocal sound. I used Studio One's stock distortion, I think I had it set to either hard tube or fuzz. I don't think I had it 100% wet, it may have been on a FX track/bud. On The New Abnormal, all of the vocals were recorded on an amp! So you could also reamp vocals and overdrive it to give it that crunch. There's a couple ways to do it, but I'd encourage you to play around with your DAW's stock saturation and distortion first. Hope this helped!
Thank you so much :) I do! In fact, I'm working on my third studio album right now! I will be posting more content related to the album, including some breakdowns and a few recorded shows!
Pretty good job, friend, but I'd recommend learning all the lyrics before recording. Not really a good look to be reading them off your phone in the vid. Plus, when you know the lyrics offhand, you'll be able to really dig into the emotional part of the vocal performance.
Normally, I don't do that. The album just came out, and I learned all the entire song, recorded, mixed, and edited this video in 12 hours. It was a time thing
You're super talented but I'd definitely recommend getting an e-drum set or something. The fake drums kind of take away from how great the rest of the cover is.
You and me both :( Did this on the day it was released for a school project, ran out of time for my deadline. It is my one regret. That and the lack of snare rolls
Terrible Cover man! Listen well everything of the original song. Put some effecta on your voice, sounds horrible, use compressors on voice and guitars.
