    Jared, this saved my ass. I had taken my doorknob off to work on something, and the cage popped open (clearly had been messed with in the past) and everything came apart. I didn't want to buy a new knob because I rent and didn't want my landlord to notice.
    I had tried unsuccessfully to put it back together but couldn't figure out how to orient the cam drive units with the transmission plate.
    Your animation made everything click and I got it back together minutes later. I even managed to get it to work better because, like I said, a previous tenant must have messed with it and the knob would stick a lot. Because of your explanation I realized part of the transmission plate (which was slightly bent) was bumping against the cage.
    Seriously, you took something I couldn't understand and made it easily understood in under 5 minutes. Great job.

    Holy flip, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
    I'm not even kidding, I accidentally locked myself in a room with the door handles (and therefore also the spindle piece) taken out, because I thought the door would just open back up or something if I pulled on it.
    I know shutting the door in the first place was probably a bit of a moronic move, but this video was ACTUALLY a legitimate lifesaver for me, because I seriously couldn't have gotten out, otherwise. You are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this!!

    Seeing the montrosity of the things inside the handle made me already give up on trying to understand, but once you assured me of showing one piece at a time and clearly showed their function and purpose individually, while gradually showing how the "chain reaction" works, it all made sense. Perfect!

    Superb animation, well-done! I especially love that you named all the parts, as that it makes it easy for me to describe a problem to a support desk. Instead of, "Well the problem is in the cylindrical thingie that moves when the doodad is turned," I can correctly say, "the problem seems to be in the latch assembly because the cam drive units aren't moving smoothly, but the handles with the rosettes work fine." Thank you!

  • @ladyt2588
    @ladyt2588 8 лет назад +7

    I swear...I just locked myself in my room after only installing the "latch" piece in the middle with no knobs and of course after closing the door to see if the "bevel" was facing the right way. This showed me how a door lock mechanism works so I learned how it must be manipulated with no knobs..
    new vocab words in ""
    Thanks Jared guy.

    It's fascinating that this design hasn't changed much in a long time. This helped me fix my broken bathroom doorknob, the springs weren't retaining as they should be, and shaft was warped, not bad for a 12 year old knob but it had to go.

    Today, I got locked inside my bedroom when rotating the handle would not pull the latch. It was 5 am. I was on 22nd floor apartment, alone in the house, main door with safety door locked from inside. I watched this video on RUclips to learn the concept. Luckily, i could open the screws around the rosette using some household item because there was no screwdriver in the bedroom. I realised that the actual assembly was exactly as part the video. Unfortunately, the cage of cam was too concealed and too strong to open the latch. I realised after tinkering the assembly that the square spindle was loose and towards outside, so i pulled it back in, refixed the rosette around the spindle properly. Then I turned the handle holding the rosette. The latch opened and i finally rescued myself out. Thanks a lot. Without this video, it would be impossible to come out of this ordeal myself

    I had this weird thought when I was trying to sleep a few weeks ago. I wondered how door handles worked. I tried thinking for myself how they work but couldn’t quite do it. I couldn’t let go of this thought, I thought about it everyday. I tried thinking of different ways it could work but I came up with none, I couldn’t wrap my head around the concept of a door handle. It drove me sick. I couldn’t sleep anymore. Whenever I closed my eyes, all I saw was a door handle. It taunted me. Taunted me for not knowing how it worked. It ruined my life. I couldn’t do anything anymore, not even the simplest of task. I was slowly going insane, and I knew it. Doors became an obstacle in my everyday life, I no longer even saw the doors, only the door handles. And they were taunting me. I couldn’t take it anymore. I was on the verge of a break down. That’s why I came here, to finally get the answer. To get the key back to my sane life. And I can tell you, it saved my life. It really did. I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for this video.
    I’m a recovering door handle addict, and this is my story.

    This is an awesome example of the mechanism. Referencing ~3m in, I think the problem with my knob is that I over-rotated the cam. The result is that turning the driver or twisting the lock with the key turns the handle and pulls in the latch rather than locking/unlocking the door.
    Trying to google around the problem leads to unending pages and videos about door adjustments when this was almost exactly what I was looking for! At least now I have a plausible explanation about what's going on!
