You cite the cheesy and somewhat sleezy lyrics as a negative of this album, but i've always felt that's just always been part of the charm and character of Chromeo. He's an homage to all the cheesy disco and funk music that used lyrics like that. I think it helps to set an atmosphere and direction for the album and I personally love it.
Damn, I actually think Over Your Shoulder is one of Chromeo's best songs that I've heard. The lyrics are kinda ridiculous but the bassline, synths, guitars, and production in general are great if you ask me.
Breaking down lyrics to a chromeo song just doesn't make a whole lot of sense imo. They are tongue in cheek. taking their lyrics a little seriously are we?
I fell in love with album when it first came out. Years later, I'm still hooked on it. I think the only song I can say I didn't like is Play The Fool. Otherwise, every other song on the album is gold in my opinion. How can you go wrong with Over Your Shoulder, Old 45s, Hard To Say No, Sexy Socialite, and Lost On The Way Home. I give a solid 9/10.
I personally loved the album and it's cheesy lyrics. And like some other people in the comments I also really like Sexy Socialite and Over Your Shoulder is just so good! This has to be one of my favorite albums of this year.
Ok, I finally listened to this whole thing today. I loved it. It's my first Chromeo record. I don't get why he was so hard on this, but that could be because I haven't listened to much Chromeo. I loved every song on this thing.
Business Casual is a 9 and this is a 5. Interesting. I just dont see the drop off on this record. Still sounds good today like most of their discography, if you're into this kind of sound of course.
This album is the first I've ever heard from Chromeo, and I thought it was amazing. Wayyyyy better than Random Access Memories. As far as lyrical content goes, I think it's clear that this record isn't supposed to blow you away with insightful and profound lyrics. I actually think that the cheesiness of the lyrics adds to the appeal of the album. It's a funky, melodic, and fun dance album. I will say that Fall Back 2U is the most beautiful track on this album, and I identify with lyrics because I'm dealing with a similar situation. Loved the album.
whaojen I'm not a moron, I'm a HUGE fan of Daft Punk, I know the different between them and any other band. I'm comparing the two albums because they explore similar genres, and I'm saying Chromeo did it way better.
Anthony, would you ever consider making a 'retrospective' video on an artist(s)? By that I mean picking a favourite artist of yours or someone unique who divides listeners. Structuring short-reviews of their full studio-album chronological discography + a discussion on their image, their impact on you and their genre(s), etc.
Remember, everybody! I've got AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH ANTHONY FANTANO coming up on June 19th at the Space in Hamden, CT: www.thespacect.com/anthony-fantano/ I hope to see you there. :-)
Old 45's and Somethingood are 2 great tracks, maybe the best ones I heard in last few years. On this list I can add Daft Punk - Fragments of Time, Disclosure-Together and Anoraak-Summer is Over.
This is the peak of Chromeo in my opinion. The production is killer, and aside from a couple of tunes, these songs SLAY. Jealous, Old 45's, Somethingood, Fall Back To You, Hard To Say No, Fall Back 2 You are all SUPER catchy. But the best song on the album has got to be "Over Your Shoulder." They really nailed it with the old style 70s groove that ranks up there with "Couldn't Get It Right" by Climax Blues Band. I sometimes play this tune at parties and will have people come up and ask me who the band is. Love your reviews, but you missed this one pretty hard.
I really like the White Women album! There are a few tracks I really do not like but I personally would give it a 8/10 just because the tracks I do like, I LOVE.
I'm a huge Chromeo fan, and while I agree with your overall assessment I think you're unfair to some of the individual tracks. I think they've really branched out on this record trying their hands at slower, less sort of glossy pop music, and yeah they're not like club tracks but stuff like Old 45s, Hard to Say No, and so on have become some of my favorite Chromeo tracks. It's also weird to hear you sing the praises of Jealous. I can't stand it, it was clearly produced in a different manner and sticks out like a sore thumb from this record. Even Dave and P themselves said it was the sort of trojan horse, if you will, delivered to top 40 radio in order to draw new fans in. And it worked, I've heard it used in commercials, I've heard it on the radio, and I know people who bought the record FOR that song who would never have listened to Chromeo before. But it's just too bland and straightforward to me.
Compared to their previous sounds, and videos, white women is their best. Loved Jealous and esp Old 45s. Come alive was awesome. The notes on Lost on the way home really struck me. Don't be too hard on the lyrics. It doe not intend to change the world. If you were looking for that, then the answer is no. I would probably say that unless I am deaf, the CD needed more base, more authenticity in the funk and less synth feeling.
Saw them at ACL 2014 and the songs they played from this album stuck with me. The sound of the opening of Old 45's slapped my face. Really great performers.
What the heeeelll Romanthony? Man, actually one of my least favorite tracks in this is Jealous! NOT FUNKY ENOUGH!! Too poppy. It's funny because my favorite songs from this album are Sexy Socialite, Over Your Shoulder, Fall Back 2U and Somethingood. I mean it's an album to have fun to, lyrics are important, but not specially for this kind of LP. I just missed much more vocoder, and some tracks felt too "soft" or poppy if you will, compared to their previous efforts.
This album is dreadful and it sounds like recognized for what it is but light 5, is such a high score. I have never seen anything less than a light 5, given. Where is the hate. Make use of the 10 point scale system if you're goin to use it.
I agree that the album wasn't particularly great on the whole but I do think the song "Somethingood" deserved a mention. It's a pretty decent tune and one of the highlights of the album in my opinion.
Damn "Over My Shoulder" is my favorite song on the album (Hell my favorite Chromeo song period). This was my introduction into Chromeo so I should really give their other albums a listen. I generally agree with you though, a good amount of the album had weaker tracks. I'm glad I discovered Chromeo though! Great review!
I have to agree with Fantano on this one. After I heard *Jealous* and *Come Alive,* I listened to this album hoping to get more banger songs like those. But I didn't. The album starts going downhill after *Come Alive* because there are no bangers with the energy like those two tracks. Just slow, medium speed, mid songs.
Frequent Flyer I agree with, but for everything else not entirely. This is my favourite record of the year and I've been a Chromeo guy for years though, so my opinion may be skewed.
I don't really see how this album is any less lyrically proficient than the two that came before it. You acknowledged that their whole gimmick is basically being cheesy and tongue-in-cheek but then ignored that during the actual review
I agree with you on a lot of those points, But I guess I am such a fan that I overlooked some and after a lot of listens all the corny stuff started to fade away even though it's still there whenever I go back to listen to that album. Definitely not their best like you said.
IMO the bass line on Sexy Socialite and Over your shoulder save the tracks. I would give a 6. This is just another album that has been the recent trend of having half the tracks kick ass and half the tracks worthless. Like Schoolboy's album, Yeezus, and many other albums (could go on all day). Something fresh for the car ride, but i'll just go back to buisiness Casual soon. Any word on their project with Hall and Oates?
I’m so late but Fall Back 2U is incredible and sexy socialite is one of the funniest songs I’ve ever heard and I truly love it . This album really goes ham but only when u don’t take it too seriously I guess. SO fun for choreography
Also in regards to Over Your Shoulder, I look at the lyrics as poking fun at fraudulent white knights who pretend to be concerned about how a woman feels about her looks and such, but are really just extremely thirsty and are trying to get in her pants. Idk if that's what Dave 1 was going for, but that's my perception of the lyrics.
theneedledrop You gotta admit it has a great groove at least. Probably the only "funk" song on the record. To me it's musically their best non-oversynth song.
I honestly thought this was a great answer to Business Casual. Jealous, Come Alive, etc... come on. From what you have posted, I'm surprised you don't fancy Toro Y Moi. Truth.
Alright, coming back after hearing Business Casual and Head Over Heels, I can safely say that this review is being WAY too harsh. This is still probably my favorite album of theirs and if Business Casual can get a 9/10, this can too.
I'll be up front and say with very few expectations I listen to popular music.First off I love fancy footwork & white women (but now white women is my favorite of theirs) and actally I'm not a huge fan of business casual it's like to mid-pace dance music ,fancy footwork and white women are more up-tempo so that's a preference .I saw them live at made in America ,they where great!!!!
Thank you for being the only person I've ever heard agree with me that Frequent Flyer is the worst song Chromeo has ever done. I no longer feel alone in my Chromeo critique.
Sexy Socialite. Unfortunately it fails. It could be saved by taking the middle girl-rap section and mix that into a whole song. The stripped down slap-bass and drum create an uncommon groove. Very intriguing.
Anthony is acting like chromeo have never made a song with cheesy lyrics before. And if you dont like "over your shoulder" there's just no hope for you.
It's true that the record is interspersed with a number of mediocre songs, but I don't think you're giving the lyrics enough credit for a few. I don't see Over Your Shoulder as a disingenuous seduction song at all, sounds more like a guy in a relationship addressing a specific girl (more like Hard To Say No). Wanting someone to move past insecurities doesn't automatically make you a white knight!
The only chromeo i listen to is on white women with the exception of night by night. I dont not like a song because the morals of it are sleezy. I like the corny lyrics
You cite the cheesy and somewhat sleezy lyrics as a negative of this album, but i've always felt that's just always been part of the charm and character of Chromeo. Exactly
Damn, I actually think Over Your Shoulder is one of Chromeo's best songs that I've heard. The lyrics are kinda ridiculous but the bassline, synths, guitars, and production in general are great if you ask me.
My favorite too
yeah, i was thinking the same thing, the lyrics are not what is important. that song is so groovy!
Dennis Davis yeah, to me i dont think lyrics makes or breaks a song. i thought it sounded great and fun
@@chocolatemilk6799 years later and this hasn’t aged well. I c e s p i c e l i l p u m p big sean…
@@raingirlcat2245 lol what about this comment didnt age well? 9 years ago i said a song sounded “great and fun” lol
Breaking down lyrics to a chromeo song just doesn't make a whole lot of sense imo. They are tongue in cheek. taking their lyrics a little seriously are we?
Critiquing lyrics so heavily on an electro-funk/synth-pop album? I think you might be missing the point slightly.
or completely absolutely. He has no concept of an early 80's funk feel. None.
Matthew Knudson I love every song so I give it a 10 .
Old 45s👌🏻
I'll listen to this album :) havent listened to it yet. Do you like Chromeo's new album? I like it a lot.
I loved "Over Your Shoulder". Its very, very catchy and fun.
Easily my favorite song on the album. And all the women at the concerts love it too.
I personally loved the album and it's cheesy lyrics. And like some other people in the comments I also really like Sexy Socialite and Over Your Shoulder is just so good! This has to be one of my favorite albums of this year.
I was at my little cousin's baseball game and they played Jealous in between innings. Chromeo has made it.
you know your big when your song plays at a tee-ball game lol
Dennis Davis I will have you know that he is 13 years old. The game was about as exciting as a tee ball game though... LOL
Rating the beard a light to medium 5.
Dirty Dan I fucked up.
Protect The BasedGod You're dead to me.
Your review echoed my sentiments except with Sexy Socialite. By far, my favorite song on the album.
This album started off strong, but quickly faded out. Definitely not as good as their other albums, but the singles were strong!
Old 45's is my takeaway. I loooooooove that track, love it
Ok, I finally listened to this whole thing today. I loved it. It's my first Chromeo record. I don't get why he was so hard on this, but that could be because I haven't listened to much Chromeo. I loved every song on this thing.

umm yeah, random access memories is from daft punk....two different bands ;)
whaojen Ummm yeah he's comparing it to another notable disco comeback album. He didn't say it was from the same band.
whaojen considering the turn that RAM made DP have become exactly the same kind of overly-referential synthpop band now.
whaojen I'm not a moron, I'm a HUGE fan of Daft Punk, I know the different between them and any other band. I'm comparing the two albums because they explore similar genres, and I'm saying Chromeo did it way better.

The fun part of it is it being fun and nonsense most of the times. I just wanted some music to cheer me up and this album nailed it for me.
Lost on the way home. I love that song. The beat is killer.
Old 45's and Somethingood are 2 great tracks, maybe the best ones I heard in last few years. On this list I can add Daft Punk - Fragments of Time, Disclosure-Together and Anoraak-Summer is Over.

I figured Anthony would go lower on this one. It was so disappointing in the context of Chromeo's previous albums.
This is the only Chromeo album I've heard, but I actually thought Frequent Flyer was the best song on this album, lyrics aside.
You should do a vid about your audio/video setup, what kinda camera are you using?
