This was super helpful for me. I do that already, but the part about the hips is where I was lacking. Really good to know there's a method to correct it
Unconsciously aware... what is a critical point! Never thought of it that way, but it sure would help when fatigue sets in, that your brain still moves your hands into the correct position. When you're tired, your movement slows and your hands drop or lag. Training your body and your mind to be in the necessary position at all times without consciously thinking about it, is a game-changer. Having your hands in the right place at the end of the game can make the difference between the win and the loss. Thanks, Maria!
Just found your channel through your work with T4O. I was a 90’s HS goalie and the game and tech has changed so much. Just getting back into it again and your methods are invaluable for helping this 38 yr old get back in the game. My butterfly pushes are atrocious still and I will continue to work. Thank you!
My pleasure to help out Jonathan - I only started playing goalie on the ice 4-years ago to learn more about the movements and muscles so I could be a better strength coach to you guys. It is tough to pick up some of the movements, but deliberate practice and building the body that can do those movements is the way to go. Glad to know you.
Amazing. My son is 11 and I have looked for ways to help him off the ice and your video was brilliant. I realize the weight drills are not applicable for his age, but the rest is essential. I think he needs to focus on his stance and how he holds his block and catcher. YOU ARE GREAT … thank you very much for sharing this video.
Absolutely love your stuff. And the quality of the videos has come so far from the beginning. I no longer feel silly for doing shuffle drills in the backyard with my hands out far in front. For taller goalies like myself with a naturally wide flare, I feel like the most important thing to remain conscious of is what my core and hands are doing as I push. All too often I'm leaving my hands behind as I push from side to side in effort to make a save. Thanks for the reminders. You're the best.
Thanks Scott - - I look at some of the videos from the early days and it is like "WOW" ha ha. Glad to help you along the way, hope this will help you keep those hands where they should be. Cheers!
My son in 10U played goalie yesterday and won the game by 2:1 He blocked so many pucks and only let in 1. His teammates chatted " Only 1! Only 1" after the game and my son couldn't be more proud of himself!! ❤❤❤ He watched your video and fallowed the instructions. It works like magic. Thank you so much Coach!!
Lady! You have no idea how much this just helped me! I have been looking for these tips forever. I'm doing this stuff now. I'll let you know how they improve my game. Thank you so much. They make so much sense. I'm a 52 year old adult men's league goalie, playing with guys half my age mostly and doing well. But what you just showed me is absolutely what I have been missing. My teammates are great, but not the best on D. They always admit they leave me hanging out to dry. I don't care and have always dealt with it, because quite frankly, I love them. I gotta work a little harder. So thank you for this. These exercises will be very helpful.

That is an excellent alternative for side plank, being on your knees. My shoulder always hurts before I feel anything significant in the abdominal area. Thanks for the idea!

Great drills and really well spoken. I really like how you point out what is wrong that you see others doing and what we should be focused on. Those points do count for me to understand better. Also last drill I find very important and good! As in position with subconsciously having our blocker and glove in their position and our minds focused on the puck...

Thank you. I am on a 5 win streak with my team seeing the difference, obviously. I got a shutout this past Saturday. You rock! I expect to get more wins soon. Your stuff works. I got the nicest compliment from one of my teammates, who is 22 years old. He said to me, "I wanna be you when I'm 52. How are you even still doing this?" I'm not telling. I took your advice and us old dogs can indeed learn new tricks. It's only been a month and you have helped me immensely. Thank you so much!

I am stocking my brain with knowledge so that I’ll be a better goalie when my broken ankle will be fully healed, which will be in 8 weeks. It will be a long and crappy recovery but I’ll push through it. Great vid!
It does take time and it is frustrating, but good work giving it time to heal - just make sure you are keeping up with the exercises your physio is giving you.
Great stuff thanks for sharing, I am definitely going to incorporate these into my gym workouts, if I can remember them. Getting the hips to follow is key, I am still new and working on butterfly slides, hopefully this will help
I think you will find that this type of off-ice practice really helps your body execute on the ice, just start small, be consistent. Let me know if you have any questions.

Turning 24 soon, I'm looking at finally trying to get back into shape to play between the pipes after first falling in love with hockey about 5 years ago. This is excellent information, and exactly what I needed to start getting ready to suit up for a beer league. Your fantastic insight here will help me fulfill what has recently, and quickly become my biggest goal in life. Thank you
just downloaded the 14 day butterfly challenge looking forward to getting started with this and see how it works, flexibility @55 as an onset goalie seems to be about managing sore muscles and injuries (abductor and hip flexor)
Just watching this video today. Im a casual goalie always looking for more advice. Sometimes I feel the low in the legs advice makes me feel small for those shooting high on me. Im not that big either but I definitely do understand the point about being able to get down early for low shots. From my experience I often can get beat high blocker so I try and stand tall. Anyway thank you for the video! Lots of good things to think about

I'm an old forward who has been moonlighting as a goalie last 3 years. Your video's have been the most helpfull. I do a lot of hot/ power yoga and their are a lot of similarities that I can appreciate and work on. Balance and movement while staying square is my biggest challange. I'm smaller frame to so any tips for smaller goalies and coverage would help. Thanks!
Ah - ha ... confirming my suspicion that everyone secretly wants to be a goalie :) For smaller goalies positioning and box control are really key. Your positioning relative to the puck needs to be bang on so you are giving up as little net as possible. That is not my area of expertise, but spending time working on that will be key. From a physical perspective it is all about speed and stability, so building some goalie strength and then making sure your movement and agility patterns are efficient will help you play a more patient game. I hope that helps.
Oh boy... that's a good question for a goalie coach - - remember, I am a gym rat who just tries to get out there and stop some pucks, so take this answer for what it is worth. I would rather stay on the puck (easier said than done) because the body can fake, but the puck cannot. What do you think?
@@goalietraining I agree with you thankyou for your time I always come to you and 1 other for things like this I'm a part of your program for the butterfly extendment and I have at least gotten more e than 5 inches more worth of the way that my legs can extend. Thankyou for your time have. A good day
Add them to your regular strength and conditioning program 2-3 times per week. Yes, you can for sure wear your glove and blocker if you are training at home or want to take them to your gym.
I'm looking to help my 10 year old son and my 47 year old self to improve with some off ice workouts that will help each of us when we are in net. So anything that helps us with strengthening our core is very helpful.
I find that I have trouble with my 5-hole, and seeing this kinda had me thinking about my stance as a whole. I tend to be wider naturally, and it keeps me open. Does some of this off ice stuff in regards to legs stamina also help with that, or should I be focusing on a different drill to get my muscles to remember to drop closed, rather than fast?
It is more of a motor pattern to change your stance and close that 5-hole quickly, but developing more strength and stamina will give you more options to use different depths based on how the play develops. Does that make sense?
@@goalietraining It kinda does. If I'm following correctly, this type of training is more to help you last longer from the waist down, and also serves as fuel to get more benefit from specific individual training, yes?
I don't design these workouts specifically for inline goalies. I can tell you that there are quite a few inline goalies in my coaching programs who see good results from the training, but ultimately, you will have to try it for yourself and see how you feel. Let me know how it goes.
Well ur great but you should try to introduce highbread goal tending old school stand up goalie and butter fly works great our kids are loving it and arnt allway on the ice on there pad with top corners open
Making saves from skates is a great tool. Making saves from butterfly is a great tool. Like any tool, it's important to know when to use the right one. That's where hybrid goaltending comes in - it means being able to use both tools effectively,
Nose on the puck is key, its like any other sport keep your eye on the ball, obviously you need to read plays but you can learn use your peripheral vision and fraction of a second glances. Eyes on the puck (peripherals on other players/play being set up)...... eyes on the play/players (peripherals on the puck). Also there are good games and tests you can look up to improve reflexes. And in the end you will be like a impenetrable fat ninja-crab guarding its nest.
I just saw your video. Hmm... looks like a 36 year old goalie might increase his save % with your video. Brings back memories of how you move across the crease and the conditioning ideas are a great idea. I notice the current goalies like to hold their glove hand higher than I was taught. Then again I play on the top of my crease on shots.
Please keep in mind that your game will chance due to the conditions of the ice. When you start the ice is fast because it’s smooth. But after about 5 to 6 minutes, conditions change due to used ice! Upper core is important once ice conditions change!
Good point. When you say "upper core is important once ice conditions change" I'm not sure exactly what area or movement you mean. Do you mean there will be more resistance due to the increased friction as the ice deteriorates and therefore you will need to use more rotary core power?
I don't do any specific programs for roller or ball hockey goalies, but I do get messages from them all the time saying the training really helps them too.
Any of yall doin this stuff at your local Planet Fittness and people looking at you like you are a total nut? Haha. Starbucks Product placement nice:) Good info. I need to be more subconsciously aware of where my glove hand is (hopefully not falling behind the pad) when moving. It's tough to teach an old goalie new tricks. What's wired in (as a reaction in your spine!) is very difficult to change. Best to learn good habits early! Even the old skate save technique I learned from Jim Park's The Puck Stops Here is something I do by accident now and then.
Oh yeah... lots of strange looks, the BEST is when you start to see people trying out 'your' drills having no idea what it's for. You are right, tough to learn those new habits, but when you can deliberately practice with your off-ice training, it helps. Good luck with it and when in doubt, you can't go wrong with the old skate save.
Yeah - - probably most of you know that there aren't 3-moves that will literally let you stop every single shot - - ha ha! I wish there were, it would make my Sunday mornings a lot easier.
Throw your goalie stick at the skaters head , gain an extra 500 lbs, and modify your goalie pads, gloves and shoulder pads with an extra 13 inches. Oh yes, drink a lot coffee. Kidding: good stuff
Knee staying over the ankle (not going over the toe) ideology should be eliminated from the face of the earth, especially when it comes to athletes. Goalies should be forward with their weight in stance, pushes, recoveries, etc. and forward knees (over the toes) allow for significant addition of power in many movements as long as the lower extremity is strong from the ankles to the hips (and the rest of the body of course).
I think you misunderstood - or I didn't say it clearly - I was not suggesting the tibia should be perpendicular to the floor (that would be knees over ankles) - as you see from the side angle view - my knees are in front of my ankles where my shin angle and back angle are parallel. I definitely should have said 'ahead of my ankles' or something like that - but I agree - I haven't taught that the knee shouldn't go ahead of the toes in probably 25 years - thanks for catching that though.
GoalieTrainingProTV my dad wont let me because it is about an extra $2k than player equipment. But it would be cool because i can play all skating positions

Great content! Thank you very much!
You are welcome - glad you like it 😀
Awesome!
Glad you like it Annabel!
GoalieTrainingProTV thx for replying!!
*cool, first time I've seen Maria on skates.*
ha ha - wait until you see me in all my gear - I have posted a few videos before, but there will be more coming #onedaybetter
Hi i m Colton
some good stuff!
Thanks Andrew!
You absolutely will bump your SV% if you use the exercises consistently - you will also get more comments from your teammates.
The hardest one is when the player skates across the slot and goes far side. Most goalies drift to close to the side the player is going.
Any thing I can do playing in a beer league but I’m not on skates. It’s roller hockey but goalies don’t wear skates
I don't do any specific programs for roller or ball hockey goalies, but I do get messages from them all the time saying the training really helps them too.
lol have to fill in for a goalie today its my first time thank you
Oh wow! Well, you've seen this video now - I am sure you will be straight FIRE!!! ha ha - hope you had fun!
Same
@@lightningshock4378 Have a blast out there!
@@goalietraining thank you I sure did!
Where to start after Major surgeries, Rotator, and Hip resurfacing. Six months off ice.
Have you been followed by a good sport physiotherapist - that is your very best option.
I’m not a goalie but those drills work for karate. Specially core and leg strength
It is interesting you say that because I often suggest martial arts as good cross training or a good second sport for young goalies.
Great video. I am dead tired after those 3 jumps.. let alone the hold... haha
ha ha - it gets better - - slowly
watching this the night before i have to play goalie for the first time in like 3 years for a refresher
Hope it went well!
@@goalietraining it did i only let in two cheap goals and won 4-2
and brought my team to a championship
@@jack.s_21 That is AMAZING!!! Congratulations!
@@goalietraining thanks
I am a street hockey goalie... but this still works
Awesome - so glad to help! Thanks for letting me know.
I’m training for a goelie
when I do the second one for an entire game my knees hurt a lot and after the game it hurts to walk.
If you are getting pain when you play, then it is time to get things checked out by a physical therapist to see what is giving you that discomfort.
Hey maria Im so bad in training but in match Im much better. BTW Nice shirt
I'd rather be bad in practice, but good in a game if I had to pick one.
Glad you like the shirt - thanks!
I was 9 when i stard to wach you
ha ha - I will hate to hear how old you are now Melissa - - I've been doing this a LONG time :)
Man, If I only had this internet-coaching back when I was a kid.
I hear that ALL the time!
GoalieTrainingProTV It was one thing for the regular players. But getting a coach specifically for goalies was rare.
Me tryna find box lax goalie tips (it isnt working)
I have to play for the first time in two years tomorrow so wish me luck
Good LUCK!!!! - make sure you do a good warm up!
title: stop every shot!
"so, you can't stop every shot"
just kidding, haha, great video!!
Yeah - - probably most of you know that there aren't 3-moves that will literally let you stop every single shot - - ha ha!
I wish there were, it would make my Sunday mornings a lot easier.
She’s such a beauty
Thank you 😇
wait i play there
Might see you there one of these days - maybe tomorrow!
I stopped every shot no matter what it was with.....the pad stack
ha ha - you can never go wrong with a nice two pad stack!!
Throw your goalie stick at the skaters head , gain an extra 500 lbs, and modify your goalie pads, gloves and shoulder pads with an extra 13 inches. Oh yes, drink a lot coffee. Kidding: good stuff
I didn’t know Justin beiber was a goalie coach.
👍🙏
Nose on the puck, that's going hurt .
If you're not wearing a mask I guess.
why am i watching this i don't even play hockey
That's a head scratcher alright... not sure :)
this is what we have come to???? LOL
😂😂
FREDDIE!
Im not even a goalie…
ha ha - now maybe you want to be one :)
GoalieTrainingProTV my dad wont let me because it is about an extra $2k than player equipment. But it would be cool because i can play all skating positions
@@Kerem9_8 Yeah, the gear can be pretty $$$.
hurry up and get the milk idc
hunh? milk?
Afte 3 seconds...
Wrong.
Why does she have a voice like a little boy?
Because everyone has a different voice - we are sort of born with it and mine sounds like a little boy apparently. Anything else I can help you with?
The title here is about 3 moves. Nine minutes in and you just talk and talk. Why don't you list the 3 moves at the beginning to give us an idea what's coming. Thanks anyway.
Great suggestion - thanks so much!
