    While do your build you just have to keep going to Bass Pro and look at their boats. The least expensive boat with features (rod rocker, livewell, storage bins) is 15K. It makes you feel good on how much money you are saving by building yourself!

      Oh sorry, the bass pro shop boats have some wood but the Nate Eckhold and Mike Lopez tiny builds are now all made out of aluminum. I made mine out of aluminum and coosa and if I were to do another it would be all aluminum. I think the only thing about the bass pro shop is they can be financed.

    An outstanding bit of information! You may want to mention that the price of the motor and the boat itself needs to be added to this. A brand new motor will more than double this cost and a brand new boat hull will add another significant amount - the bigger the boat the more expensive a motor you need and the price of the boat itself goes up too. There is also the cost of tools to consider. By my calculations, the cheapest bass boat at bass pro runs cheaper- not more expensive- than building your own though not by much and the quality isn't there compared to the boats on this channel.

      Many people who come here already have the boat and motor. Itd be impossible for them to average the cost of people who use craigslist or facebook marketplace. Also, I highly doubt you found a bass boat at Bass Pro for under $3k. Even the used ones are closer to $10k starting

      @@bass_scout_actual7554 you can buy a 16' jon boat in good shape with a good motor, trolling motor for 2-3k all day long. Yeah it may he a 95' model but once you put 2k into it you basically have a new boat.

  • @dougchurch9626

    I have a 16'x 75" aluminum boat, that im starting to redo for myself. I drew up a diagrams for framing, hatches, livewell, consule, etc. I have built many boats from 12' jon boat, to 30' cuddy cabin, from steel, aluminum, fiberglass, ect. If done correctly wood framing will last 20yrs or longer. But i have priced out aluminum for my current build and at over $1000 just for framing. And priced wood, at 140, plus 100, for propane for burner, and 2 part sealer. 240 total. Plus if you cover and take care of your boat it will last many years to come. I really enjoyed your work, very good job. But you need to ensure to people watching, that depending on what state your in, doing this mod, could and would get you a very expensive fine and could possible get boat impounded.

All coast about the same maybe even cheaper to go fiberglass if you go with marine plywood. either way I think this channel is awesome keep the bad ass builds coming!

I have a few leaks on the rivets now that i'm going to have to fix before next season(i try not to fish if the low temp is below my age, i'm 48). Hopefully it's still under warranty since its a 2016. I like your vids, and there's always ways to make things cheaper, but... I feel like the materials list is a little deceptive while your filming in front of the 4-5 grand in tools that you'd need to take on a project like this. I'm in the process of re-doing an 18' crestliner, and have fixed and redone many boats before so "we're in the same boat", lol. But yeah, if you're not redoing several boats or have many other uses for them, the tools alone can break the bank before you're even talking about materials.

    I’ve restored 4 and you can have $3-4 thousand spent in no time. Electronics, trolling motor, anything electrical will eat you alive. But when your done it’s paid for and if you sell it after using it for2-3 years more than likely you will at very least you will get your investment back and have a free boat to use in the mean time. You be been doing that for the las 20 years or so.

I would only want the minimum HP to get the boat on plane and I’d only need tiller steer.I have no idea what a used dependable 10 or 20 HP tiller steer painted and installed by you would add to the high end $3500.00 price. There is one area boat manufacturers are completely failing here in the PNW... And that is the extreme Multi-Species boat you can keep in your garage...
    I'm looking for a 16ft boat almost identical to what you bought. Open floor plan, small front casting deck, tiller steer. It's going to be used for lakes and BIG rivers, Trolling, casting in one spot, and casting while trolling.
    Currently the only options are no storage (like a stock jon-boat), a tiny amount of storage in a versatile hull (like I described above), a TON of storage (bass boat, that doesn't work well for salmon and ocean) and what I call "Columbia River boats" AKA: Great for trolling, crap for everything else. Big windscreens, enclosures, large boats, but doing anything other than trolling doesn't work well. But those are super popular around here...
    So If I can get what I'm looking for, it's eventually going to get rebuilt with a much larger front deck, with much better storage hatch options, but still have the rear area flat and empty, for trolling. The combo of the 'bass boat front' and 'columbia river boat back' able to be stored in the garage, and also be able to bring 3-4 people along comfortably, is what is lacking... All of the manufacturers are half-assing that side of the market and it shows. I looked at dozens of boats at our sportsmans show last year, and the only ones with cool features had giant consoles and windshields in the way.
    I get it, it rains here, but that's what raincoats are for. When it rains, it's windy, and your giant enclosure becomes a sail and the boat is uncontrollable.

      In the same boat here in Portland, I’m redoing an old 16ft mirrocraft, can’t quite copy all these “bass” boat conversions, but stealing great ideas to incorporate everything I need to chase the bass and the salmon and the Kokanee.

      I restored a 16 ft Starcraft SuperSport, dual-console. Did it for around $1500, MAX. Got her in Hayden Lake, ID & had to completely re-floor her. Not as glitzed out as what these guys. I used plywood. I applied deck sealer 1st then put Harbor Freight truck bed liner on all sides of it. I reused the aluminum stringers but used 1" wood to aluminum screws and wide-capped (?) rivets from Tacoma Screws. After initially buying hardware, rivets & screws from Lowe's & Depot, I saved a good 1/3 the cost. I did mine with GREAT consideration to budget. This includes buying a 9.9 hp kicker as well as trolling motor tie rod to the main. PM me if you'd like to know more

      I sent you guys a email a couple years ago about a tracker I bought that I want to rebuild. I got busy and haven’t started it yet but I think this winter it’s going to happen. I’ve only ever had small 12 and 14 foot Jon boats and am not too experienced with electrical or really tech at all on a boat, never even had a steering wheel but I bought an 89 tournament Tx for 3 grand and it’s been mistreated by the last owner so I’m suspicious that I’ll need to re-foam it because it was left outside uncovered in Washington state and the deck is in bad shape. I can only assume there’s wet foam in there.
      If the framing is still decent and all I really want to do is add a rod locker are you guys able to help me out with a consult on the rebuild? I’m sure there will be a cost and I’ll buy a lot of stuff from your site but I just want to make sure this is a project I can handle before I go crazy.
      What’s the best way to start the process.

    • @pellman77
      @pellman77 4 года назад

      no you shouldn't. Aluminum creates a toxic gas that is deadly when welded on so i wouldn't try it unless you're an experienced welder with good ventilation and a respirator. Typically speaking aluminum is the best method to use because its easy to work with, very lightweight, and won't rust like other metals.

      It’s not that hard to pull off,it just takes time and money.I just restored a 1986 18’ Alumicraft. It cost $3,000+ and took me 3 months to do. I did it all my self,except for the wrap I put on it and my wife helped with that. I had over $300 in paint and primer alone.And I restored the trailer too. It gets a lot of compliments and offers to buy it off of me. Give it a go. Electronic are the most costly thing. I have $800 in a new trolling motor and 2 Garmin striker 4plus cv units. It’s a
      Big commitment. It’s my4th restoration. If I can do it
      Anyone can. I see so many project boats for sale online that people say they lost interest in it’s unreal. I thank they got into it and realized that this is not going to be easy and it’s going to cost lots of money or they don’t have the skills to complete it so they sell it.

    What’s the reason for v bottoms how do they do on the water vs flat bottom

    • @squatchymcsquatchsquatch3015
      @squatchymcsquatchsquatch3015 4 года назад +2

      I'm sure his video will be great, but for a short answer: V-bottom takes rough water better, flat bottom has a shallower draft (distance between the waterline and the bottom of the boat.) It's kind of a moot issue when you're talking about "tiny boats" because you're not going to want something under 14 foot in anything approaching 2' swells regardless of the hull design. But if you're in 1' swells, the v-hull is going to slice through the crest of the waves so that your ride is more comfortable, while a flat bottom will "slap" against the crest of every wave jarring both the passengers and the hull alike. On the flip side, I had a 14' flat bottom with a 25 hp outboard that I could navigate in 3-4" of water, where a comparable v-hull you'd be looking at a lot closer to needing a foot of water. Just like everything else in life, its a trade off. There's plenty other finer points of load displacement and functionality, but that's the primary difference before you start getting into the smaller details. It's all about your personal preference and how you like to fish.
