    Spectacular. I love the extreme prog mixed with early Genesis/Danny Elfman. The thing about the ending is that it makes you want to listen to it again, which I’ve done many times now.

    Virtuosity taken to its highest level... I liked the contrast with the voices, this tendency in Japanese rock music to take the contrast of styles to certain extremes is very interesting.

    The bass player (Wakazaemon here) is a guest musician, so she didn't write the bass parts (not sure who did). The drummer (Kanade Sato) officially joined the band a couple of months ago, so they are now a 4-piece. I would love for Wakazaemon to join as well because she is an amazing bassist and I think she would mix great with Kanade Sato, but I assume her being in East Of Eden, playing with Marty Friedman and being a session musician has her too busy as is. I actually do enjoy this track quite a bit, but yes Koiai is also hit-or-miss for me. The 2nd EP is more my thing than the first one though. I have a feeling Li-Sa-X is still trying to figure out what to do with her projects. I am pretty sure she is the main writer for most of Li-Sa-X band and Koiai's tracks.

    Originally Lisa-X wrote this song as mostly her and Hazuki were shredding guitars and Kotono was doing rap lyrics. Kotono changed it to the current version.

    I enjoyed the entire concert. I was skeptical when the Li-sa X Band broke up and Koiai formed because I love Rina's vocals and hadn't heard much of Kotono up to that point (I hadn't really listened to Ironbunny at that time) but she has really grown on me. If they do another production run of the Blu-ray, I highly recommend it.

    Agree with you about the song. This is an absolute _dream_ _team_ though, technically speaking. The fast and funky bits are mesmerizing, and I've gone back to this song at least 20 times since it came out just to listen to those parts. But then it's kind of optional whether I listen to the rest. It's like a lot of prog, where song structure often takes a back seat and you just marvel at the technical prowess.

    This was the opening song to the live show, so you could say it was the build up to the rest of the show.

    I don't love everything Koiai do, but this particular composition is genius for me. I can't think of a band that blends super-technical prog metal with jazzy pop in quite the same way. I'd like there to be more through-composed songs, and I know this isn't technically through-composed because it has that one repeating element, but it feels like one. And it manages to feel epic in a short space of time. That it ends with the most chill song element is a bit jarring, but not in a bad way for me. It fits with the novelty of what they're doing.
    I think where my taste differs from yours is that I feel strongly that the modern conventions of songwriting should never become a straitjacket. I've thought that too when you've talked about the purpose of a bridge being to build up to the payoff of a final chorus... yeah, sometimes, but not always. And also on song length... for me there's no one correct time to aim for - a 3 minute song can be too long and a 13 minute song can be too short.

    • @BakaBreakdown
      @BakaBreakdown  2 месяца назад +1

      Thank you for that, and I do firstly totally see your first paragraph as a very interesting interpretation of the song. It certainly makes a lot of sense. The jarring end could be a tonally interesting technique.
      I want to focus a little on your second paragraph though, I wonder if I have worded myself poorly in the past. Actually I would be the first to say writing conventions should not be a straight jacket, and regularly applaud songs for going against the often set mould. I love any song that can do something different.
      The question is, what does the song set itself up for?
      So, does a bridge have to build to the final chorus? No, certainly not. However, if you choose a traditional arrangement and put your bridge after 2 choruses and directly before the crescendo, you have somewhat put on the straight jacket yourself, and have to be very clever if you want to find a new way to wear it ;) .
      I openly applaud any song that does differently as this one does, and the reason I found the length and ending an issue here was not because of the time on the clock, or the positioning of a bridge, but that the song itself set expectations I personally felt it didn't follow up. It was a series of moments that, to me, all felt like they were building to something, and it was the fact it did that so beautifully, that made the ending feel out of place. It was their success in one department that made the lack of an ending jarring. But where it was good to your ear, to mine I felt robbed of more ;) .
      I do however appreciate the comment very much, and thank you as always :)

      @@BakaBreakdown Yep, that's all good. (The bridge bit wasn't about this song btw, it was some others, e.g. by Hagane.) And of course breaking conventions isn't intrinsically a good or bad thing - it's about whether it works in the particular instance. In fairness, on first listen I loved everything about this song except the parts with vocals, and it took me a couple of further listens to grow to love those parts too. So my first reaction to a song I now adore would probably have been more critical than yours. That's why I'm not a reactor - one of the reasons anyway!

    • @BakaBreakdown
      @BakaBreakdown  2 месяца назад +1

      Oh how I agree ;) . I brought back the reactions from popular request, but I have to admit that I find them difficult. I prefer to do the in depth reviews on the main channel, but people seem to connect to first reactions a lot, so I do work on them.
      I agree though, that feeling of whether an unusual technique works in a song, it is both subjective, but can make more sense with multiple listens, once that idiosyncrasy loses its surprise factor and just becomes something you accept as an intentional part of the song. In this case, I must admit my opinion hasn't really changed, but I do get where others are approaching this from :) true indeed

    You reacted to the studio version of this as my request on a Sunday stream back in December and had similar thoughts then.
    The track is from their 2nd EP released in October, on that version the drums were very obviously programmed and I think the bass was either played by their producer or also sequenced, it didn't get the same attention in the arrangement as the guitars.
    This was the bassist Wakazaemon's (from East of Eden & Marty Friedman's touring band) first support gig with them and she was sticking to the recorded parts, I think she's since gotten more scope to add embellishments as she's played with them more.

    “I could’ve done with more of a payoff… it ends before it gets to really reward you”
    For me, it starts with the reward. It does end sort of abruptly though. Overall I enjoyed it, and I likely give more points than you for the technical stuff. My only concern would be if this isn’t the direction they choose to go in.
    Edit: Although it was different, being different was refreshing to me.

      Oh yes haha! Sorry, the display I have in RUclips Studio had me looking at two of your comments from different videos alongside each other! Ill address your comment here a little more directly therefore. I think the idea of having a song that establishes an early impact and then unravels it is a very interesting one. I am not sure if this song did that so much as it seemed to revisit concepts and then stop, but I do think that it keeps you on edge.
      Regarding the technical aspect of (I assume) musicianship, it is absolutely their initial core strength. I am not sure I want this to be what they focus on for the sake of it, but I hope we continue to see it used. I actually really appreciated that this song had some moments of very simple musicianship, those gaps gave more weight to the more intricate moments.
      Certainly interested to see where they go next though :) !
      Thanks and sorry for the confusion!

      @@BakaBreakdown Ahh, okay. I wonder if that other comment was my Fami one?
      I think the slow moments were partly there to enhance the impact of what comes before and after them (making the epic parts hit harder)-even before the song fully kicks off-while the slower moments add a refreshing change of pace as well. Edit: I just noticed that you were getting at that with “gaps gave more weight”.
      “absolutely their initial core strength. I am not sure I want this to be what they focus on”
      The more technical aspects play to their strengths, which helps to distinguish them from many other bands, then if they manage to add those aspects without cost to the other parts of the music (with good songwriting), they can better market themselves to people interested in those aspects (usually such an opening exists for all-female Japanese bands), while still overall coming out on top.

    • @BakaBreakdown
      @BakaBreakdown  2 месяца назад +1

      Totally agree, and I do actually think this song is starting from that correct mindset (in my view at least), that they are using their strengths to colour a song that seems to have a genuine idea at it's heart. The problem for me, is that where they are faultless musicians, their song structure in this song at least, left me feeling like they had some good ideas for sections, and a novel idea for a surprise ending, but it was a combination of great ingredients that left me feeling that the meal wasn't ready to serve yet ;)
      However, as a long term prospect, I should actually say that I do agree, there is a lot of promise just in the simple fact that they did something interesting here and actually gave priority to making a song. If that keeps progressing than I agree, they will have a stand out quality and an incredible lineup :)

    You create a lot of expectations to where it should go with no consideration to what the song is about.

    • @BakaBreakdown
      @BakaBreakdown  2 месяца назад

      I think that is certainly a fair interpretation, I would counter by saying though that my expectation is set by the build up and progression of the music itself. The music sets a mood, a tone. In the same way that a single phrase or melody can be resolved or not, an arrangement can set certain expectations. For me, it was the song's very beauty in how it set those expectations that made the lack of a payoff feel odd. This is my interpretation at least, although I respect the view :) . Thanks!
