Objectively speaking, J.Q. has the most perfect interpretations of all the suites. He just plays with such a soft touch, yet produces such a powerful sound that all cellists - even masters - should strive for
Best interpretation on RUclips so far - playing that piece for an orchestra audition next week so I'm listening to various performers and this guy totally rocks! Good old Misha Maisky comes next but I prefer this kind of humble, clean yet expressive playing! Now back to the practice room :-(

This is something different. He really is "somewhere else" during the performance, and the sound just pours out like it comes from another world, it is almost scary. Just unbelievable performance, you have to know it when you see one.
Wonderful, fast as he played the prelude had me worried about the Gigue, but he played the Gigue about where I am used to it.. Clean transitions, I bet this is pretty close to what Bach had in mind. I am not being critical about the tempo please don't slam me, and no I don't think I am better. Tip of the hat to a wonderful musician.
@0406611 Es la mejor interpretación a mi parecer, Rostrópovich me encanta aunque las toca rápido, como se tocaban en los '80, a cualquiera que hoy haga eso lo golpean con el arco del cello.
This watching sure is a funny mode of enjoyment, he is very very very very very very talented and it's a sign that true wisdom is not gone from this planet, that someone would take up such a laughable pass time these days, subject himself to personal ridicule and open us all up to possibilities in applied mathematics. I just wish I could sit closer to him and thank him personally, take him to lunch and appreciate him, I think that's what the composer intended.
Funny thing is that he sounds like that in live performances too.. ( I had the great fortune to hear him play the suites at the Montreal Bach Festival.. !) The sound he makes fills the biggest room...
Well, he sounds even better live, and well, it´s a Cappa from 1696, I had the chance to try a Cappa and those cellos are like Ferraris, they are a perfect match.
It's a bit absurd to divide it this way. Sure room acoustics play a great part in the sound one hears, indeed perhaps objectively more than the instrument, but if you put, say, Casals in that exact same spot in the room and gave him the same cello, his Suite 3 would still have sounded _completely_ different from Queyras' interpretation.
Well yes but we are speaking purely about timbre (sound quality). No doubt Casals would sound totally different because his bow technique is much worse. Have you heard Rostropovich play in Berlin walls? Sounds horrible because of the acoustics. Doesn't matter if you are playing on a strad if your environment is shit.
I like this performance so very much, so playful and yet serious, never flippant , never just showing off (Wispelwey?). I heard Casals in Prades approx 1952, great, memorable performance however different. By the way... awful camera, no I mean really awful. Too much close close closeup, would make anyone look silly.
oh just in the Allemande where he plays a lot seperate that i like slured, but there is no autograph so we dont know really what Bach wrote himself...apart from that i love his version a lot!
My story is this: I am a pianist and note-to-color synesthete (C is red, D is orange, E is yello, etc). In addition to color-shape associations, I tune my music to A-432Hz Scientific Pitch, or A-444 Schumann Resonance (Earth Frequency). My little story is that I had never explored much of the Bach cello suites except the famous G major (which I converted nicely for piano!). And, so it seems that I was brought here by an A432-Audio app that I downloaded. It is an A-432 radio station that plays many different A-432 Hz Channels from all over the world. I was trying out the new player and suddenly the Corrante section of the C-major suite was playing, and I found it very lovely. Even though I had never heard it before, something told me that the playing was very special here, and I was compelled to find out who Jean-Guihen Queyras was. What I like about this performance is that there is a sort of softness to it. Nothing sticks out. He keeps his dynamics somewhat restrained, and I feel it really helps bring out this particular piece. Thank you Jean-Guihen Quyeras for your musical offering. If you are out there, Mr. Quyeras, or if anyone is interested in viewing my music color-theory, do visit me here on uToob at this given name I write from. Be well! - _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
Rostropovich used to say that the audience was always sneaking a look at the solitude of the musician and his music. That's why I don't care about soloists' faces, I'm just a snoop in this case. Enjoy the music! That's it!
I agree with you 100% on your excellent comment. Queyras has an energy that doesn't rely on "embellishments" to carry the music.. (but then, I am biased.. He's my favourite all-time cellist :-) )
Prélude. 0:18 Allemande 3:30 Courante 7:28 Sarabande 10:20 Bourrées 1 & 2 14:20 Gigue 17:50
+Abraham Wu Thanks.
Abraham Wu I love it when people do this. Thank you.
🙏
Le frère de Jean-Guihen Queyras est mon chef d'orchestre
Thank you :)
I wonder if papa Bach ever heard his sweet suite played so well. It sure has made my day.
This is so epic… like man made one of the best Bach interpretations
Powerful passionate as these solo suites ought to be. The cello growls with beauty.
Merci à Jean-Guihen Queras pour ce moment d'infinie beauté avec Bach , avec Bach et avec un violoncelle..
Objectively speaking, J.Q. has the most perfect interpretations of all the suites. He just plays with such a soft touch, yet produces such a powerful sound that all cellists - even masters - should strive for
Anner Bylsma is my favorite interpreter of the Bach suites
@@darylnoble5711 do you have a link? I'd be interested to hear
@@mason11198 There are several recordings of him (1970,1998 and I think other performances as well) on RUclips
@@darylnoble5711 100%
Phenomenal cellist. His recording of the 6 cello suites for Harmonia Mundi is exceptional.
wait wtf this is so clean, hes actually a god
quoi no god omg wat
He`s the best among Bach suite interpreters!
this is exceptional! have you checked out Gavriel Lipkind's? or Peter Wispelwey's?
I’m generally fan of Anner Byjlsma style of Bach playing, as his pupil, Mr. Queyras is The continuer of this tradition
@@GiaMeziridis HMMM, cool very interesting. Ima check out the dutchman
Quite wonderful! Jean-Guihen takes me to another place. Thank you so much for this gift in our troubled time.

I shall also play this piece for an orchestra audition this week!
You must listen to Janos Starker (Thank me later)...this is good...Janos is the greatest...
It's always a pleasure to enjoy beautiful music played by a beautiful human...
Magique! Tellement corps et instrument font partie d’un seul être.
Queyras ♥️♥️♥️ great performance
Uno dei violoncellisti più originali e interessanti sulla scena. Complimenti Maestro !

Muy buena versión. Recuerdos felices. Viva Bach. Vivan sus suites de cello. Gracias.
wonderful! What an amazing dexterity and gentle touch of his right hand!!
The best version of this monumental suite. Monumentaly played!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Superbe interprétation, bravo JG Queyras
It is my favourite interpreation so far. I hope Sol will eventually record this. She has to!
Bravo! Amazing performance with high sound quality without unnecessary video editing or noises. THANK YOU.
Remarkable performance!

Te best interpretation of the suite 3. Monumental !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Easily the best of the "modern" cello perforamnces of the Bach suites!
Quelle merveille
Wow, what a Demi-God of cello - redefines the meaning of beauty.
SO beautiful! So glad I heard this! has never him play bach, now I adore his interpretation. Simple, clean, genius.
This interpretation along with the one from Pieter Wispelwey are soooo favorites ;-)

Transcendent playing.
Amazing
Thank you.
It is my favourite.
So good
The sarabande is played very beautifully. All the rest as well of course :)
Agreed.

Pela estatística acima, ainda há gente que não gosta... Como é possível uma coisa desta?
👏👏👏👏👏
Queyras and Dindo!
Now I see your point, exactly, Bach just left the sheets with no indications or so ever.
It's nice, isn't it?
Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions I guess.

Yes, he has a beautiful nose haha.
Imagine Valak says Hi to him from behind

Same Jewel, same Masterpiece, very different Aroma w/ ea "Poet"...
Beautiful, I dont like all his choices for the bowing though...
never heard about him i like him

How strange that in all the comments nobody mentioned the name of Yo Yo Ma?
Too polite to mention him.

@thenimbleturtle yeah by romantic they mean in the style of the romantic era of music... not literally "romantic" or having "romance"
Lol, this is actually the exact opposite of the romantic tradition of playing the cello suites.

Che senso hanno i frequenti primo piano della faccia? A far osservare il naso, come sembra da certi commenti qua sotto?
