Spike can't hurt humans. Their morality has nothing to do with it. He can hurt good demons. He can't hurt bad humans.
Was gonna say the same thing.
Such a weird thing to take away from it. Reactors be missing or interpreting things in some really weird or far off ways. All fun here enjoying the reaction and really enjoy that Buffy has another fan.
@@powerpanda557 ?
what even was that accent? An American doing a British accent doing an American accent.
Exactly what I was going to say
Just remember that Spike's chip is only a chip. It has some kind of pseudoscientific way to tell if his target is human or not, but it's not magic! It has no way to judge good or evil.
"what even was that accent?"
american playing british trying to play american
Whatever Spike was trying, it makes me chuckle every time.
Percy isn't "deadly afraid" of Willow, he was perfectly willing to work with her and her friends in Graduation Day, Part 2. Maybe he was shaken up at first, but it passed rather quickly.
On a deeper level, not only do the Scoobies physically return to the high school but they also emotionally have to face who they were in then, accompanied by all its attendant insecureties. Hence the return of Percy, and Spike's pointed comments to Willow and Xander, saying they're just her groupies (slayerettes?). Also Buffy dwelling on the emotional trauma of her drama-filled high school relationship with Angel.
And Riley calling Buffy selfish still makes me want to fight him. That's off topic but I just had to get that off my chest.
He called her self involved. That's different than selfish. And to be fair, she is pretty self involved. Probably comes with the territory, but still...
Oops, you’re right! I guess I hear what I want to hear. Perhaps I’m a bit biased 😅
“I’m just an old pal of Xanders.” People who’ve never watched this shown have no idea how funny it is.
As for the accent, I think Spike was just trying not to sound like his real self.
@@ronfehr7899 I think he was using the Texas accent he was going to use in Buffy
Doomed was a great fun episode with the comedy between Spike and Xander hilarious. It's almost like the 'Odd Couple' the two of them in the basement is a sitcom I would pay to watch. The last part when Spike gets recognised by Riley and tries to put on an American accent was hilarious, and then trying to get Willow and Xander to go out with him and try and kill something, 'oh come on', great comedy.
The fake Southern American accent Spike had was originally meant for the character.
@@Madbandit77 Yes I remember seeing an interview saying he was originally meant to be American as a character
Yes, Spike knows what he is doing. He cant hurt them physically, but he can "terrorize" them mentally
“No plan, just punch?” is such a Buffy line
Spike's speech about them being Buffy's groupies, is like Cordial's speech at the beginning of the Zeppo. Spike can't physically hurt humans.
My thinking here isn't that Buffy is rejecting "super" folks for relationships to protect them. Shes saying that to cover that shes scared of getting hurt again.
Also I just don’t think she’s that into him
"What even was that accent?"
That was Spike faking an American accent.
James Marsters asked his accent coach how he teaches an American accent to British actors, and the coach said to emphasize the "r's." So that is what he did. So we have an American actor, mimicking a British person pretending to be an American.
It is one of the moments that always makes me chuckle. This little throwaway line and the countless like it over the show is one of the aspects that make Buffy so special. Personally I think the accent is from Southeast Indiana where Spike used to March in the 4th of July parade .
Without hesitation or hope of return Buffy starts to leap headlong and alone into Hell.
No, Buffy's willingness to jump into the Hellmouth had nothing to do with Riley. He provided her the means to do it easier, but she didn't know he will (or can) when she made a decision.
Riley said "hostile 17 can't harm any living thing." Apparently the initiative programming doesn't think demons are "living things"...
Or Riley was simply incorrect. Maybe the chip was supposed to work like that, and they told Riley about it, and so, when he saw that Spike can't attack humans, he assumed the chip works as intended; but actually it's not.
Wait, can Spike hurt kittens?
@@migmit hmm, might make kitten poker less appealing! 😁
@@migmit Riley was speaking in broad strokes as people normally tend to do. The chip would have a database (or criteria filter) of ‘living things’ from an entirely human POV.
No more kitten poker for you Spike. (I’ll wager)
But maybe if he’s lucky he can subsist on mosquitoes.
@@LLLLLL-wp9bz You lose your wager though.
lol tru true . I forgot

Once Buffy came back up with the third demon in tow, the threat was basically over. The ritual was called the 'sacrifice of three,' but only two ended up being sacrificed. Although you're right. They still need to do something about the demon's body.
By the way, I wonder if Giles got his little trinket back.
Willow's response to seeing the dead body was definitely different from the ones she saw in season one's Prophecy Girl. Although she still went to Buffy, she seemed more freaked out the first time.
She's seen a lot since then. You get used to things.
Regarding Spike: it's not that he wants to "feel like himself" it's that there is a literal demon inside him that craves violence. As a vampire his body craves blood (for survival) and his demon craves violence (because it's evil). The more depraved the violence, the happier the demon is (hence the baby killing, r*pe, etc) but just like his body can survive on animal blood, his demon can be sated by any kind of violence.
A demon isn't inside him, Spike is the demon. William was the human that Dru murdered to create Spike. They are two separate characters. There is no soul in Spike's body so this is just the demon we are seeing.
@@troikas3353 Spike is a gestalt entity composed of the demon's desires & William's personality. I was aiming for a simplistic explanation but thanks ever so much for your input.
"Evil Willow" is more properly called VampWillow.
Ahh, yes. For ...the reasons. * Cough * yes. 😅
i don't think riley chose to fight demons, i think he is doing a job and this is where he was assigned. it is a job and an adventure as opposed to an informed and meaningful choice like willow made
Agree. They needed college age soldiers to fit in at the school. My question has been… did we first see The Initiative in Season 1, Episode 11 and did Marcie go to work with them? I estimated it would take 12 to 18 months to build and some time to prepare and plan. So without anymore information, was Marcie taken by the early stage of The Initiative?
It's funny when people don't realize that James Marsters is American and it's the British accent that is fake. Nice to hear such a positive impression of Riley. I feel he gets unfairly treated by the fans sometimes. People think Hush is cozy? Those Gentlemen things still haunt my nightmares.
The people that think Hush is cozy must be part of the group that become pen pals on the Dating Sites for convicts.
Oh god a new video, we’re doomed
I did enjoy your recap! I normally skip over this episode--'not another hell-mouth it's the Apocalypse episode' I groan as I go to the next one.
You know what bothers me? That I'm the only one who recognizes the girl that's with Percy. I knew of her way back in the day when I was little and used to watch shows like The New Mickey Mouse Club in the early 90s.
That actress used to be on a show called Kids Incorporated. And you know who else was in that show? Eric Balfour, he played Jesse, Xander's best friend in the first two episodes of the series. Jennifer Love Hewitt, Scott Wolf, Mario Lopez, Stacy Ferguson aka Fergie and Renee Sands who along with Fergie formed a female group around 1993-1994.
So everytime I see the girl Percy is with, it makes me think of her in that time when she was around 15 years old.
Entertainment is a big business that operates like a small town. Watching older shows always yields …. Look, that’s ….. or reading… the date with blank in the party scene is… fill in a famous director, writer, or producer. Seeing the same age actors for the same auditions and filmed episodes is how actors develop relationships and their careers. Thanks for the identification, would have missed.
First, I'm an old man, but not a creepy old man. That disclaimer aside, your hair style looks very nice!
Forrest knew of the "legend of the Slayer", but wrote it off as a myth.
I find it rather amusing that Spike is well north of 100 years old, and he has not figured out how to do laundry. I did some today, and managed to not shrink a single item.
It was nice to see Buffy give Reilly a second chance at the end of the episode.
Thanks for the reaction.
🤔 Interesting… this would imply that Spike simply acquires new wardrobe. Because vampire.
@@LLLLLL-wp9bz Nah. Easier explanation is that as a retired fellow with a wife that still works, I do a lot of the laundry. But I did a lot of it even before I retired. And I am WAY less than 100! (But the gas gauge is leaning toward Empty.)
Another fabulous reaction! You really are a fan favorite, you even finished a thought that I didnt know you started lol.
Riley is awkward with Buffy because Buffy is awkward with Riley also. Riley is the first outwardly normal middle class values boy/young man that Buffy has spent any meaningful time.
Putting his soldier duties aside ( hard to do) and Buffy not being a Slayer, they have a budding Hallmark Channel relationship. He is definitely not a Parker, no apparent demon/vampire parts, and has the approved traits deemed worthy in a suburban society. Riley is intrigued and has never been around a Buffy before Buffy has not spent time with a boy that has a moral center, treats her and others with respect, and is open minded.( Remember he was helping to set up the Lesbian Alliance meeting at the start of Something Blue) He really is a male that Buffy has not been with or hung out with before.
It will be interesting to watch them going forward
Funny you mentioned Hallmark Channel because Marc Blucas (Riley) has appeared in some movies on that channel
@@Madbandit77 Of course he has been on the Hallmark channel. The camera does not lie and some actors persona, body language, whatever it is… they are just right or wrong for some parts. The audience has a gut feeling and no matter what they try, they are who they are. Very very few can do it all and be believable. Than you for the info…. Sadly I have to admit to not watching anything on the Hallmark channel except at my grandmothers house.
Spike can't hurt humans or animals - but he finds out he can in fact hurt demons/monsters! Haha.
"Again! Oh, as usual, dear." and "Really! You're not just saying that." are the best lines in the episode.
Don't confuse the chip with not being soulless.
An American actor (James Marsters as Spike) portraying a British character who has to do a phony American accent. It's such a great moment.
The whole dynamic between Spike and Xander and Willow was great.
Morality has nothing to do with how the chip works. Spike cannot hurt humans and he can hurt demons. It's that cut and dry.
Being called "stupid" of "self involved" by Riley doesn't have him, or fans, convince me he should be convincing Buffy of a relationship. What he said, even in the context, was wrong. Buffy's not acting "stupid" or "self-involved." She has genuine concerns and issues that she definitely needs to deal with before being with somebody romantically. She didn't realize that until she saw him stepping from Joe Normal into her Slayer life. It doesn't matter whether there is truth to what Riley says or not. If she doesn't deal with her issues, things get rushed. No matter the context, Riley was being rude and not respecting her or her choices. Its sad that neither Riley, nor Willow, in previous episodes for pushing them together, respect the fact that she has issues (Willow for knowing what Buffy's been through directly with Faith slaying-wise and Angel and Parker dating-wise, and Riley for the word no). Whether people have issues or not people should be allowed to go at the pace they need to. Buffy getting together with him without dealing with her issues makes Riley more of Buffy's rebound (just like Parker was meant to be). And Riley and Willow have helped put Riley there. If he waited, perhaps her issues may have been delt with (like they almost were before Angel returned from hell at the beginning of S3 with Mr. Platt and Buffy leaving the Claddagh ring in the spot Angel "died") By this episode's end, Riley convinced Buffy to be in a relationship too early. Riley is a Psyche Major, who I feel used that knowledge of the Masters program he's in (which means he's probably also 24, but at least this time Buffy is legal) to push Buffy into accepting him so quickly. I feel more like he feels he can fix and "make it right," if she's not to "self involved," rather than I feel like he likes her.
The chip doesn't allow Spike to harm humans, it has nothing to do with good or bad.
Love u hair ❤
why do you keep calling it the Lab? Its called the Initiative
14:20 remember in "School Hard" when Spike tells either a teacher or a parent, "You're too old to eat. *Snap* But not too old to kill"?
Remember that not all Demons are "Evil". I.e. Whistler and Doyle. So, we KNOW that Spike can hurt demons without issue. Not certain about animals. Not certain about "Good and Evil". BUT, still catches a headache from trying to hurt "Humans".
it has nothing to do with being evil or innocent. Spike can hurt demons good and bad but cant hurt humans at all
"What kind of accent is that?" I've been saying the same since season two 😂
You didn't think she'd get the last demon? You thought this was the series finale?
i hate that they brought percy back just to turn him back into a jerk
Riley needed to be more honest with buffy but still a good dude He had to lie because of his job Still missing Angel Hey stop moaning spike at least there feeding u

I think the idea of mixing work and romance is what's freaking Buffy out. It's too similar to dating Angel, on the surface at least. She knows how frequently she got hurt and how much the relationship toyed with her emotions and that they could be pitted against each other. With feelings involved, their judgment gets clouded as well. In this episode I think Buffy is very much having a trauma response/trigger. A lot of people want to side with Riley here and think Buffy is maybe catastrophizing (or something,...not thinking clearly) and while there's likely truth to that and truth to what Riley is pick up on I also think Buffy's not wrong in her first instincts. She's literally being asked to ignore her gut. She might be wrong in assuming the worst or fearing the worst but she's not wrong in that it feels wrong and perhaps too triggering to date him. And I think she's showing signs of growth too making decisions not just with her heart but also looking at all sides.
This episode immediately made me screech the wheels and put it in reverse with Riley. Back in college (when we chipped out notes on stone tablets) a guy was attracted to a female friend of mine when he discovered she was into hiking, climbing, and similar outdoors sports. So was he, and he acted just like Riley was in this ep. It was the defining aspect of their crash-and-burn -- never mind that she was more (and wanted more) than that. Riley gave me exactly the same vibes and quelled any will-they/won't-they I thought they might have been building. That could be unfair. We don't really know that much about Riley at this point. He just might actually be an upstanding, corn-fed Iowa boy in the end.
im sorry cass but sometimes buffy comes off as a little selfish at time she want this that and she has a opportunity with riley she is ignorant tot that
Watching Buffy when it first came out, and upon rewatches years later, I still can’t help but feel like there is zero chemistry between Riley and Buffy. Like not even the tiniest spark. I genuinely prefer watching Spike try to figure out how to do domestic chores while Xander berates him. 🤷🏻♀️
I know right, didn’t they do a chemistry test with the actors?
Honestly, tell someone that you will NEVER tell one of their secrets and then actually keep that secret from literally everyone in the world.. it actually feels really good. WAY better than that dopamine rush we get from puking gossip

I agree.
She'd have to write them down, because the words pop out when she has the thought and then she moves on to the next thought, if she didn't speak them then the words could be lost. 😉
Also sometimes what she speaks aloud then happens. Saying later "I thought that was going to happen" would end up with people claiming "no you didn't..."
