The "Favorite suicide booth since 2008" joke is even funnier with the hindsight of the recession.
I just realized the show came out in 1999. I seriously thought they were joking about the financial crisis.
I mean the jokes were written by PhD owners. They could of predicted the economy quite easily.

@@realkekz they definitely used that year on purpose. if there was no joke in it they wouldnt have used it. all they had to do was be paying attention to the economy. theres people who report on it and make these predictions. they didnt have to do that themselves.
it's amazing how flawless this pilot was. Pilots are notoriously hard to make. A lot of great shows have mediocre pilot episodes but this just stands out
I think it also helps that the crew had almost a decade of experience working on the Simpsons under thier belt

People really like pushing the narritive that it was all planned. It was not. It'd be pretty cool if it was but I'm sick of people pushing cool sounding theories and silencing actuality.

this pilot had more detail than the released one i think
There's so many great jokes in this storyboard version of the pilot already! The dialogue in this is almost the same as the final version, plus even here the models are really polished, you can even see that they already have wireframe renders of the 3D animation this early in production. Idk why, this stuff is just really impressive to me for some reason.
Behinds the scenes stuff is cool! It's like learning how a magic trick is done.
Yeah its a awesome technique iron giant production used. It's makes animation a lot easier since most of the work is already done.
I bet the CG stuff was started as soon as the story board was created. This was thrown together with VO to give to the animators who were probably foreign based something to get started on.
We gotta remember this was Matt Groening, so he had millions $$$ to throw around after the success of the Simpsons

@@ngls The biggest clue is how fluid the animation is compared to everything else. They move in ways that would be insanely difficult to draw in full, and way too advanced to draw for a storyboard.
Same with the blimp.
I suspect those were added in post when this was made ready to be put on the DVD as a special feature.
The importance of the cgi adds to the atmosphere
*Fun seeing the neat little differences, sometimes just unused takes of lines, other times new lines entirely. I immediately noticed the lack of “You stink loser!” and Fry’s yelps in the freezer being done by what sounds like either a staff member or Matt Groening, but certainly not Billy West.*

The fry voice is very similar to his real voice so it's more likely they didn't have him (Billy West)

They tend to do this a lot during animatics for animated shows; they’ll switch between the original voice actor and then placeholder lines for voice lines that haven’t been completed yet. I could be wrong but I recall animatics for SpongeBob being the exact same way.

Yeah the show was developed back in 97, they planned almost the entirety of this show before making the pilot.

How ironic that when this first aired it was a neat show about the future, but now 20 years later we're here looking back on it with nostalgia missing what once was and the time we had back then.
It's amazing when a show's concept can grow with the audience and be seen from two different perspectives from the airing and then the post airing.
Also, looking back on this show I kinda realize how hard they dropped the concept of the career chips considering it was the entire drive of the series being kicked off.
And the auto repairing tea cups etc. The longer the show went on the less futuristic it was.

I don't. The show ended with a good, well-made and sentimental episode. A great way to finish it without being destroyed.
The idea that shows should last forever is unhealthy and leads to worse art than you'd get if the creators get to frequently move on to new projects.

voices are the first thing done, then the storyboard. probably music was the last thing

Music cues and themes can be developed early but they aren’t refined and cut to time until picture lock. You would never want to work from a Leica because it’s timing is pretty loose beyond overall runtime.

What a polished animatic. I haven't seen the pilot in a year or two and I didn't notice any changes except one (I don't remember the "most disasters happen without a warning" joke).

Yeah, probably because now people is used to see super clean boards that are almost animated which mirrors the final product. The original storyboards of this pilot are more loose and off model.
With the lack of audio it makes it feel like a old point and click game

The Empire State Building joke is super funny and even helps foreshadow that bit about Old New York!
Exactly, I wish they showed that in at least 1 scene in the show instead of it being knocked over in Old New York.
Although there is a scene showing the before and after of Fry's house, and they included the Empire State Building not being there in the after portion, as it was knocked down, and I enjoyed that little detail.

There are a lot of interesting things in this but did anybody notice that the Slurm sign says “It’s highly addictive” in English instead of Alienese.
I also like that they put arrows to indicate that objects are moving.

@@DaveWraptastic that would probably be entirely luck. Due to the date of the technology, it's not connected to a center time that regulates the actual time passing that our devices currently do with the internet. Clocks during that time period would need to be synced periodically or else end up off a minute or so off each year.
