I appreciate that you get confused and make mistakes because that is my signature process for all crafting.
You stole my thing. I like to call my Oops moments my Bob Ross happy mistakes
I love how you show us making a little mistake. That makes me understand better 😌
You can use sawdust colored with acrylic paint for flocking, too.
"Laub" is the foliage of trees or bushes, it´s a word to sum up all the leaves of a single tree/ bush or even an entire wood. It is also used for the dry leaves on the floor that have fallen off during autumn :). Kind regards from Germany!
Bay leaves remain green when they dry out, they have insect-removing properties, and if the multi-cutter passes have small leaves easily without chemicals. Like genders, they used greens cut into parts of A4 or whatever you want, they help the materials to be put back in their vase.
Yeah Im going to have to try drying out Bay leaves and using them. That's a great idea, thanks for posting.👍
I’m doing something for the first time, so I had none of that “leaf” stuff to hand.
I used dried oregano that I had in the cupboard instead and it looks pretty good!
Hey perfect! Oregano sounds like an excellent substitute! Well done :)
Brilliant!!! 🎉
that is some italian craftsmanship
@@jackoleen1236 👨🏻🤌
Tea leaves are pretty good too. And smells nice if you pick the right one ;)
Thank you so much! I am a miniaturist--yes, dollhouses--but you stuff has been very helpful at larger scale!
Really like the way the vines get smaller as the plant grows. A way I'd try to get the vines to fan it is this. Get one of those cheap cork message boards lay it flat on your work surface. Use parchment paper over it (to protect the cork makes clean up a snap).
Now fan out your ivy the way you want pin then using sewing pins cover with your white glue/water mix dry and paint them. Now your vines will hold their shape to flock however you would like. Using spray adhesive or more white glue method but they won't clump together on you. They will still have give to them to whatever you want to add them to. Walls trees or whatever else you can dream up.
Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial, I just got finished making your amazing vines for my trees I’m working on.
Great easy to follow instructions!
Possibly one of the best tutorials I've found on this subject, thanks for all the effort in creating this it's much appreciated.
By the way, I tried both Elmer's and 3M spray adhesive and I found that the 3M is much better in all form. It's bigger, has a better spray pattern and sticks a bit better in my opinion. Only downside is that it is a bit more expensive, but I think it is still worth it.
Ah good to know. Yeah I've received a few comments in here about people not liking the Elmers. I'll have to give the 3M a go for my next can. Thanks for the info!
if you want to up your game a tad with the vines, I suggest pulling up some grass and small weeds and washing the roots. Then let them dry. invert them and then follow your instructions above. The level of realism is off the charts.
Super idea! Thanks for sharing.
thank you for sharing your mistakes, and mis steps. it takes a truer teacher to do that . instant sub.
I would use a shoe box to spray the adhesive then cloths pin the up to dry, might be easier.
Ah, great idea! Thanks for the tip🙂
There's one thing model R X R 's forget about when doing Logging scenery in the mountains .
And that is " Pine Needles " on roofs and open less traveled areas .
I use that same rough twine , Separated and cut / chopped at or about 1 / 8'th inch . 1 / 4 to
3 / 8'th for O gauge . Then spread at random over the HO / HO- N3 layouts .
If some gets in the pine trees , leave it there's always dead needles in the tree ( where do you think they come from ) special order E -Bay ??? Lol
Great vid. The nice thing about this twine is you could colour it to a darker shade of brown too if you wanted darker 'branches'
Ah great idea!
Great tut. I will surely use this one on my farm diorama . Tnx for sharing your knowledge with us
Thanks Maureen! Glad to hear you'll be using the technique.
I will make these soon. GREAT VIDEO and Tip! LOVE!
Grabbing my 🍿! Stoked for this watch! Good to see ya Neil!
haha, first to reply. Thanks Devin! Was a rather quick-ish video so hope it still satisfies. :)
It absolutely did! Can't wait to whip up some vines!! Awesome technique.
Thanks for showing this tip.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Many clever tips to try, creative job on the wine, looks superb and so real!
Thanks man! Glad you've found it helpful
Another great video. I love the lighting. Your editing is incredible
Thanks Michelle. 🙂 Went over and checked your channel out. Looks like I missed your last vid with your boys! Super cute, those little men are awesome. And Huge! I wasn't thinking they were so grown up like that already. Hope you keep making videos and have fun with it! btw it's easy to let youtube get to your head, trust me.😕 Just know you're taking a step out there that SO many woulnd't dare to take and keeping that determination to keep at it is again another that so many dont do. You've got great confidence and are an amazing person, so *if you want*, you can totally push through the games our mind plays on us and keep at this thing and love doing it. So, hope you keep making more vids Michelle as I know your personally fits the platform and that you can totally love doing it along the way. Hope you guys are doing ok and things are starting to get back to normal again. If not, it'll come. All the best and take care Michelle. :)
For a more relistic "Ivy" look, find some female Birch catkins around September and October after they have shed their seeds. The 3 pronged bracts look great and are a lot more realistic than Noch leaves in this scenario.
What a great idea to use twine , looks awesome!
Thanks! Yeah it turned out pretty good I think :)
Nice video, end result looks excellent - very effective. Good job 🙂👍
Excellent video as usual!
Thanks :)
Looks fantastic! I am coming towards the end of my tavern build using your tutorials, and I am so tempted now to have ivy growing up one side of the building and onto the roof!
Nice! I'd really like to see how that turns out. Are you on Facebook?
@@RealTerrainHobbies Afraid not :( I'll be tiling the roof today, I'll try to share you a link on your community page when it is done, would love to show you how your videos have inspired someone else to build
This was fun to watch
Thanks! :)
That’s actually really smart! 👍🏻
Thanks! 😁
Thank you so much for this Tutorial mate, I was lucky to have all the pieces needed. My only difference was I had Javis light green scatter as my leaves, but they look perfect. I used this technique for my Joytoy 1/24 scale to 1/18 scale desroyed building diorama, and the vines look amazing and really bring it to life. So again thank you for these amazing tips 🙂👍
Looks great
Fantastic results, Neil. Love the way you used the twine to create such a realistic vine structure - it looks amazing against the masonry.
Always excited to see a new video from you - and am never disappointed - thank you! Will be SO there for the final reveal of The Wizard Tower. Yep.
And, oh, MAN, do I understand the whole "protect your work surface from over-spray"...."Oops" thing! Story of my life... Isopropyl Alcohol is my go-to for wiping down my hands and cutting mat after the oops - sanity saver!
Haha thanks Heather. Yeah, figured I'd leave that all in instead of making the "perfect shoot." I'm sure not perfect when I do this stuff lol so hopefully that builds confidence in others out there . Going to take you up on the isopropyl alcohol! Been just using dish soap and water with mediocre results.
thank you for great tips :-)
All aboard the helpful train! Toot toot!
My tip would be, use PVA drop on some scatter, allow to dry, then spray everything black, then go for the long vines and so on. works for me
wonderful and good job thank you
I've done this same method but I find that using watered down pva on it works better. You can then lay it on parchment paper and shape out the tendrils and then hang to dry or apply it right away to your diorama. Cheers mate!
Thanks man, will give that a try. the watered down pva is enough to keep the leaves on long term?
@@RealTerrainHobbies it is mate yes, when you water it down, do like 70/30 glue to water, just watered enough to make it more "apply-able"--however not the best for doing layering like you like to do, so I'd recommend my method to start to get your shape and base then when that dries use the spray adhesive to add details on top! 😋
That's a pretty good idea. I prefer to use strong-hold hairspray instead of spray adhesive. It works just as well as the spray adhesive but doesn't clump together as much and is easier to pull apart if it does. Hope this helps too.
does it hold/last long term? @@xaero892x
Good job, Keep it up
They look really good bud.
Thanks man. :)
I’ve got to go to work in like 2 minutes, but I look forward to this when I get home. I know it’s going to be good 👍🏻
Thanks man! Have a good day (night?) at work.
Real Terrain Hobbies. Just got home ( didn’t think that day was going to end ) and had a chance to watch. Great work as always. Look forward to seeing that wizards tower completed 👍🏻
‘Like’...??
First of all...great tutorial. While watching I couldn't get the visual of Dan Ackroyd doing a Julia Child bit on SNL. I know I am showing my age, but still funny. Thanks again, bye
lol haha. At least I didn't come to the same fate bleeding out to the bitter end😅
Love it
Made some this morning and it worked great. Thanks for the video. Will the spray glue dry enough eventually so they are not so prone to sticking to themselves and collapsing?
I'm not convinced he wasn't drunk while filming this. lol
Looks good ! Still hoping to see how that tavern build turns out though :)
Coming up after this my friend. :)
Twine is a great material! I used it to build some vines too :D
Yes, love it. Great stuff and also makes for good looking rope.
Интересная идея, это Здорово!!! Творческого успеха Вам. Мне нравится. 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 💖
Спасибо! :)
I take a metal to coat hangers and braid twine around and shape you want.
I suggest having two stations (maybe using those square trays for baking. One for spraying adhesive and one for the flocking). So it'll be more organize and easier to clean. You can use also those plastic container for flocking so all you need to do is just cover back the lid and just keep it away just like that. Less work 😊
thanks
Liked and then watched.
Always
Awesome!
You should use gallows, a gantry with alligator clips to free your hands :
. one for the spray
. one for the leaves
Great video! Did you try this technique with steel wool? Thanks for giving the amazon link for products used great time saver!
No I haven't. Might make for some interesting results! Glad you found the links helpful. I plan to do that for all my vids from now on.👍
the noch products are not available on amazon, any of the other sites i tried. any suggestions for something similar. i build little houses, just starting, and want to create better looking ivy wound on a fence or the church wall, than the mossy stuff from wally-world.
thanks so much for this awesome video.
Good job bro..from indonesia❤
yeah like this Diy Easy :)
Muy buena idea, me quedo muy bien en mi Belén. Lo pegue con resistol, porque no conozco que haya en México pegamento en espray. GRACIAS POR LA GRAN IDEA.
formidable .j'éspere faire comme vous un jour 👍👍
I've been really looking forward to the Wizard Tower! As always, your work is fantastic and your builds inspire me to try some crazier projects :) Question, I've got a game coming up soon where i would like to have a "lake of lava" kind of environment, with stone tiles falling out as a battle progresses. Any tips on creating a bubbly lava texture that doesn't look flat? Thanks man!
I haven't tried any lava yet myself, but this is probably one of the nicest lava I've seen. facebook.com/phoenixterrainsystems/photos/a.106916376486744/373390686505977/?type=3&theater Hopefully this link works and gets you to the lava I'm talking about. If it doesn't, let me know. Basically to quote the guy who made it: "Pour THICKish plaster. Let it roll down some. Hit it with a hairdryer... crust forms. Pound the table. Crust breaks. Over and over. Paint as desired." So he used thick plaster to get the nice thick flowing look out of it and then heated it up quickly to get the cracking effect you see in real lava and did it in multiple layers. Hopefully that link sends you to the right picture because it looks incredibly good.
@@RealTerrainHobbies Dude, you're the best man :) This is like the fourth time I've asked a question and youve responded with something super helpful! Probably my favorite channel I'm subscribed to
I'd have the tiles able to be removed as the battle progresses. Have lava done on a mat under the tiles. For a less then flat but not enough to mess up the tile laying on top use hot glue to make interesting lava flows and highlight using your red oranges yellow and whites. Might even make small"islands" of rock to jump between. This also would give the painting of hotter and cooler lava a place to be.
You mentioned a wizard tower. Do you have plans on making an archer/watchtower?
Nothing in the immediate future but definitely something I would most likely do!
Try this next time: lay the sprig out how you want it to look, spray it, CAREFULLY move it to the clean paper, and sprinkle the flock on. Then leave it there til it dries. Don't move it, touch it, breathe on it. Once that first layer dries the entire body will stiffen up enuf to work with it. Might help with clumping.
Have you ever made Redwood leaves? I'm trying to make a Diorama/Museum quality enclosure for my Leopard Gecko. There's a theme I want, and Redwood is what I'm using for the trees.
Using broadsheets or any other old newspapers is what I do to protect surfaces. It's cheaper and more eco-friendly. :-)
You might find it easier to hang your string over an empty box with a line and clip that way you can spray and sprinkle without having to move your string.
Would making mini washing line help than you can hang it up over the paper while you work
Yeah that's a much better idea. Thanks! :)
If you take a can cover then put your leaves or dirt or whatever in that, THEN take a stocking put that over the opening & hold with a rubber band THEN sprinkle your stuff on. Pick up paper & excess goes back in your container, saves your stuff.
You can take dirt from you back yard & sprinkle that with your cap with the stocking over it.
Also get some dried leaves & little tugs & put it in a blender and get scenery covering that way.

Instead of fighting with the tendrils to keep their shape and depth when flocking, could you maybe just allow them to dry and stay stiff, then spray them a second time and then start flocking? I just know I would mess this up if I tried doing it all at the same time lol.
Your new table seems smaller than the old one? How are you liking it? Your creativity is really amazing!
No new table yet, he delayed it another two weeks.☹️
Real Terrain Hobbies - Well, bummer. I bet it’ll be worth the wait.
❤️
What would happen if you used wax paper or non-stick aluminum foil as the backing paper for spraying the glue?
Instead of spray adhesive...could you get similar results with hair spray?
I'm not really sure. That is entirely possible!
Can you do a tut on how to make fake moss?
👍👍👍😍🤗
hi, what's the diameter of the brown stap?
*Snoop Dogg approves this weed video*
😅
I wonder about a wire armature.
Pro Tip..
Before you start write on the paper "GLUE" and "FLOCK" in big letters... easy to spot and remember ;)
haha, indeed
really funny how you kept using the wrong sheet - sticky/non-sticky. Hilarious :)
Laub is German for leaf.
"Laub" means foliage. and it is pronounced like "loud" only with a B at the end
Ahah! Excellent, now I know lol. I feel like that is something I should know, sort of like not know what the word foliage means haha
That Elmer's spray adhesive is awful stuff. Used it for flocking trees and man, stuff never dries and gets EVERYWHERE. Brutal to use that kinda glue.
Oh really? Maybe a bad can? mine dried fine. In general yes it does get everywhere if you're not careful, but the vines seemed to turn out great with no issues days later
Water down Mode Podge in a mister bottle seams to work better than the toxic harmful, flammable spray you are using.
Very nice looking work you go!
wheres the wizard tower?
It's here! Posted last night
You forgot slot cars in your list!
you are better off using the brown coconut material that is sold in craft stores it also is free if you used the stuff that comes in hanging flower baskets
I would like you to know that you and your work inspired me to open my own RUclips channel. The CRIADOR DE MUNDOS (Creator of Worlds) channel makes miniatures and terrains for tabletop games (Dungeon&Dragons) for the Brazilian viewer. Thanks for all your knowledge. Best regards, Alex.
Laub Just means foliage/leaves
Spray adhesives are banned some places and for good reason.
"pro" XD
Quick tips? What would you suggest my friend.🙂
Real Terrain Hobbies i just mean that you fucked up some times with the paper and the spray XD, Im a noob myself.
This gave me anxiety.
