      I agree with this 100%. My wife went through some really bad health issues a few years back and I still remember the stress, fear and anxiety I had to carry while doing my best to put on a strong face for her. We have to give each other grace and someone that’s given us a ton of great content for free deserves that as much as anyone, if not more

    • @MaxRomantschuk
      @MaxRomantschuk Год назад +6

      Indeed. Taking time to heal is never wasted, especially remembering family and friends come first. There will be time to make more content, and breaking that negative cycle and having it being something that gives rather than takes energy is definitely the right move ❤

    As somebody that has had a wife go through a difficult patch with her health I totally understand what you’ve been through. I’m glad you took the time you needed to get back to a point where you feel you are healthy. Wishing you and your family all the best in this regard.
    As for the project, one of the reasons I will quite happily wait 6 months for a video is the fact you took something so wildly esoteric and make it reality. Frankly I’m in awe of the fact that you used around five different processes to make the 3D printed waves and they fit so snugly, that’s some epic project management skills. Can’t wait to see them when you are finished!

    we're glad you're back, don't worry, I had a tough semester of college and have spent the summer getting better and getting help, the lack of motivation and the overwhelming stress is something I really relate to. in a weird way it's somewhat comforting that a random stranger who lives so far up north from me can share some of the same struggles, it reminds me that those hard feelings aren't just me, they're human emotions that everyone goes through in their life. If you're feeling this way reader, a reminder that there is nothing wrong with you, there is nothing wrong with asking for help (from friends and family and professionals), and the things you're feeling don't define you, they will pass

    • @BrooksMoses
      @BrooksMoses Год назад

      These feelings are absolutely not just you! One of the things I learned almost at the end of my Ph.D., which I wish I'd known earlier, is that almost more Ph.D. students than not end up feeling that way at some point -- but, for cultural reasons, a whole lot of us imagine that we're the only person feeling that way and so we don't talk about it and keep imagining that we're alone. (And it's not just Ph.D. students; it's just that the factors in a grad degree are often an ideal place for it to spring up.) It's really good to hear that you're getting help and getting better.
      And it's also remarkable just how much of a help it was for me in getting better to find a small community of people that actually talked about these feelings and commiserated and supported each other. Hearing other people talk about it, and talk about getting through it, absolutely helps.

    Neil, you are an amazing artist, and though we missed you, we CAN WAIT. You are the master at realistic landscapes, but real life is harder. You need to take care of yourself first. We will always be here waiting for another epic project. I've learned so much from you and will continue to support this channel even if it takes 6 more months for another video.
    I'm nowhere close to as talented, but as an artist myself, I know that you can not force creativity. Take the time you need. Be with your family. Take care of your wife. Take care of yourself.

    To address the simulation taking absolute ages, I believe the issue is that the model was too detailed so every nook and cranny the water could interact with had to be calculated.
    Reducing the polycount and making the overall rockfaces less complex in 3D for the simulation could save time if you do something like this again in the future.

    I am really glad to see you back, but like others have said, you and your family come first. I suffer from the same ailment as your wife does and so my husband and I totally get and understand the stress, anxiety, frustration, and everything else that comes with chronic illness for which neither doctors nor other interventions seem to be able to touch. While I greatly enjoy your work (and use your videos to get me through the hard days), if what you're doing ever gets to be difficult, you lose your joy and passion (anhedonia), or is in conflict with you being there for your precious wife and children, take the time - however long it is - that you NEED. Do not feel guilty about us here. Give yourself that grace, compassion, and space. As my teenage son says, "Take care of you, Boo." Us followers are here, we understand, and we hold space for you however and whenever you need. I will especially pray for your wife because I know what she is going through and how it feels. 💞

    Wow -- speaking as someone who did a grad degree in fluid simulation, and who also builds models, I knew I wanted to watch this video as soon as I saw the title. Every step of this is honestly incredible -- and also is something that I would have barely imagined was possible 20 years ago when I was working on my degree.
    The ability to take 2D pictures (from a cellphone!) and combine them to make a 3D model that is dimensionally accurate enough to make pieces that match up was imaginable, but the idea that it could be done automatically without precisely measuring the camera position and providing lots of help by hand was completely implausible. I did see several fluid simulations like yours: They were the subject of scientific papers, they had much smaller domains and many fewer "particles", and they took at least as long to run as yours did -- but they ran on supercomputers. And then 3D-printing the results ... again, maybe possible as a technology demo for some advanced million-dollar machine, and reasonably feasible with a CNC mill (which would need lots of handholding), but not with a tabletop hobby device.
    I think part of why I find this so amazing is that 20 years ago, I could probably have done this -- the skills that I had were by random chance pretty much the combination that would have been needed. As a part of my engineering degree, I'd been programming CNC mills for several years at that point. I built models as a hobby, including some scenery (for model trains). And, as mentioned, I was doing grad work in fluid simulation. I figure it would have taken me at least a half of a year full-time, probably more -- with almost every bit of that time requiring skills that had taken me at least one college degree to get. So, yeah, I daydreamed about doing things that were very much in this direction. Things that were out of my reach in the complexity and time that they would have taken, and were tiny in comparison to this.
    So my mind is absolutely completely blown. The idea that this is something that is now possible with off-the-shelf software and computers and machines that fit on a desk and in a hobby budget is amazing. And the idea that this sort of thing is now conceivably within *my* reach, within *my* hobby time and budget, is tremendously exciting.
    (Also, as it happens, what you were talking about with the cycle of anxiety and difficulty of moving forward -- that was also part of my experience for a good part of my Ph.D. Good on you for finding a way out of it, and for talking about it, and you have all my sympathies for having to go through it. It doesn't leave easily.)

    No need at all to apologize. Stress in life gets to all of us at some point or another, you are only human, none of us are immune to it. Glad you are back and I hope your wife is improving.

    Keep your head up, Neil! Welcome back and I hope you and your family are on an upward trajectory now. You focused on them, which is infinitely more important than an (admittedly amazing) model castle or dragon or ocean. Great you're back, but I'd take another six month break from you if it meant you and yours came out better on the other end of it. Cheers, mate!

    Welcome back! If you need a break, take a break. Your mental and physical health is more important that these videos. Yes, we absolutely enjoy everything you put out but take care of yourself. By the way, what a way to come back! This was incredible and you could have gone on for an hour about the new things you learned to make this project happen since you were gone. Please do more of this, if you are excited about it so are we.
