Like Calzaghe, R. Hatton and A. Khan were two other British boxers who looked very promising early in their careers. But, when the dust cleared, only Calzaghe achieved legendary status!!
in my humble and personal scoreboard, Calzaghe still ahead in the number of shots carried, great work by Jab, always the initiative in hand, shame about that headbutts that surely has slightly influenced the match, but Bika went very close to Calzaghe and had more power in the shots, but little initiative, little jab, he based everything on the strength of his shots, with another boxer maybe it would have worked, but Calzaghe was smart enough and smart to dodge the most important shots, good Bika (he just has to be careful with the head and as written have more initiative) bravo Calzaghe, generous match, perhaps a bit undertone to the usual performances, but I think it was also thanks to Bika! Joe you were a great boxer, and your father was great at instilling confidence in you and constantly representing a value-added presence, Calzaghe underrated? perhaps, but not from the boxing world, let alone from his opponents, unfortunately the internet is another thing!
Calzaghe is very underrated by many ignorant people online who don't appreciate his will, workrate, handspeed and skill, and don't realise the extent he was troubled by hand problems yet was still unbeaten. Ottke and Collins retired when expected to fight him, Hopkins avoided him rather than accept a fight being lined up, until years later the big payday v the level of risk to his reputation made it worth his while. Many boxing fans have not even heard of his great Welsh compatriot Jimmy Wilde, world flyweight champion, who went approx 100 fights (slight difference between sites' records), before losing. despite usually fighting bigger men. Gene Tunney said Wilde was the best boxer he saw.
@@mizofan of course it's mostly yank casual fans who underrate Calzaghe . I think the fact that Calzaghe was a Brit actually hurt him. Brit fighters have to prove themselves to gain equal status with our fighters, but Calzaghe was always under rated because of that IMO. In fact, I would rate Calzaghe ahead of Mayweather on the all-time p4p list without a 2nd thought. Floyd's career is a bit of smoke and mirrors. The guys he fought were mostly 'b' level guys, smaller guys, older guys and guys coming off of a series of rough fights. Calzaghe never ducked anyone that I know of, he had rough fights his entire career and survived all of them, most of them with style and flare. Some of Joe's performances were simply fantastic, even an ugly fight like this he won 8-3-1 or 9-2-1 by the judges score cards, not an easy task beating a tough guy like Bika that's a dirty fighter as well. Overall,.....Joe fought clean, he had great hand speed and I saw him bust up many guys with his so called 'slapping' punches. Look at Jeff Lacy at the end of their fight, he was beaten very badly and Lacy was considered the big puncher coming in to the fight. Joe beat a classic fighter and a very tough guy in Kessler, he beat brawlers like Bika, Eubank and Lacy, and he beat everyone in between. He doesn't deserve full credit for beating Hopkins and Jones because of their ages but they were both still tough and Joe was also at the end of his career when he fought them. Calzaghe never won a single controversial decision that I know of, Floyd won at least 4 of them that he could have lost, and he should have lost at least 2 or 3 of them in my opinion. Then Floyd fought an MMA fighter for his last win, stinking up the sport and his legacy in my opinion. There's absolutely nothing to point at in Calzaghe's career whereby you can put an asterik along side his win, all straight forward, uncontroversial wins against anyone willing to fight for 46 consecutive wins. A great career, top 25 all-time I would say. I don't rate Floyd that high because there was too much dirt, too many fighters ducked and questionable wins. Floyd paid Marcos Maidana 1.5 million$ extra to get him to agree to wear gloves that Floyd chose for him. Let me repeat that; Maidana had worn one style, Reyes gloves, his entire career. They are known as 'punchers' gloves and everyone is familiar with them. Floyd knew what Maidana did to Adrien Broner, pounding lumps on his head in their fight, so Floyd actually feared Maidana wearing those punchers gloves. He feared that to the degree that he negotiated a 1.5 million$ bonus out of Floyd's earnings in the fight, then he chose a pair of 'pillows' for Maidana to wear. That was in their first fight, a fight that many thought that Maidana won despite the soft gloves. How can you expect to be a career p4p all-time best fighter with shit like that on your resume? Floyd of course kept this a secret, but Maidana's trainer was pissed off before their 2nd fight because Floyd was lying to the media, so he( Robert Garcia) told this story in an interview. At the press conference before the 2nd fight, Garcia announced the introduction of Maidana's gloves for that fight. Someone came on stage wearing gloves about 25 times the normal size as an insult to Floyd because Floyd made Maidana wear bigger, softer gloves in the 1st fight. Floyd was embarrassed but he said nothing,.... what could he say?

All you fanboys Kill me, guess you didn’t see Joe initiate clenches himself, I give him the W but not like you all think, he got his his snot box rocked more than a few times in this bout, Joe’s conditioning may have given him a slight edge.if Bika double up on the straight right take just a lil power off the shots while circling left he could catch Joe with his left hook, Joe’s father has reason for concern he makes plenty mistakes and he’s vulnerable he’s lucky savvy enough fighter hasn’t been able the exploit his mistakes…Bika doesn’t realize he’s giving the fight away by allowing Joe to keep his lead foot on the outside of his lead foot if you understand Boxing you know what a disadvantage your at if you are unaware this is being done.
My opinion Joes one of the best of all time if not the best. The truth was no fighter wanted to fight him. Thats why America never wanted him fighting in the US because he was to good. He would have beat a prime mayweather . He beat a prime Mikkel Kessler and in my opinion i rate Kessler higher than mayweather.

For the record (despite being a Froch fan) Calzaghe would of out worked him too, to fast, to fit & too good a chin.
@Mr T you Joe Calzaghe fanatic is typical. At the time of the of Roy Jones Jr. Fight Chad Dawson was the best fighter not Roy Jones Jr.. Carl Froch fought better competition and gained multiple belts in the short period of time and you can't compare his career to Andre Ward at Super Middleweight and when he went to Light Heavyweight division and took on the best
@Mr T its easy to win when you not holding all the belts. Bernard Hopkins was undisputed champion at Middleweight and Roy Jones Jr. Was undisputed at Lightweight Heavyweight division. While Joe Calzaghe held the WBO belt
@Mr T Jeff Lacey was a hype job. While you forget Bernard Hopkins took on the best in both division. Winky Wright and Tito Trindand is Hall of Fame fighter. Chris Eubanks was beaten by Collins twice. So please don't try to place Mikkel Kesler as some great fighter
This guy was big and strong. He gave Calzaghe a good tussle. Good fight. Bika would have won more rounds if he was first more often. He was content to counter punch.
Not Joes best performance but an enjoyable fight against a very strong, athletic rough house fighter. Joe although an amazing boxer also loved a scrap and showed his toughness.
I’ve watched - and continue to watch - Calzaghe fights on a regular basis. The US commentators are always so ready to disrespect him or not give him due credit because he’s not American.
At 2:27 and 2:26, Joe appears to have snuck in 2 left hands to the cup, just prior to Bika's low blow. But it's hard to know for sure. Feedback on this, guys, pls. Thanks.
He wasn't getting out muscled and when toe to toe BOXING Bika had little to offer, though he did get better in the last four rounds or so, partly due, I think, to having tired and rattled Calzaghe mentally with his dirty games. Bika tired him out and injured him primarily through holding, butting, wrestling and nonsense like that. Joe was foolish to be getting close though, he could have kept it neater for pretty much the entire fight if he'd fought with more discipline and sense because Bika was notorious for his bad behaviour. Calzaghe should have been better balanced, landing his straighter, more precise shots and then getting out of range of Bika. Instead he began the fight as if he was rehashing the last few rounds against a tired and dejected Lacy; Joe's attitude in this fight was poor in my opinion and it made it a far uglier and more arduous affair for himself than it needed to be. When Bika started having success with lead right hands, it should have been obvious to Calzaghe that lateral movement, specifically to his right, would take him away from that right hand and make Bika miss and give Joe a counter opportunity (Bika was almost always off balance after throwing). Calzaghe definitely won it by several rounds though.
Cal had alot of experience with inside fighters and great boxers, calzaghe would point him but Ward is so skilled so talented and a future Hall of famer so which one loses doesn't mean much both are Hall of famers
It's crap when you lose your dad, left with memories and those days when seeing a photo is like a kosh round the head. Joe has those memories frozen in time on video, it will have been a rough time since Enzo passed but in time the smile returns and the fondness for life. Just in case you are a Troll Joe, thank you for raising my spirits and picking me up. Weird connection here, the ref lives in my City and was in the next bed to my brother at St James hospital, you couldn't make it up.
in fairness Bika was,nt a bad boxer ,just made that age old mistake of getting frustrated at his lack of progress and lashing out,,bit of a muted fight for joe imo
Calzaghe was a top boxer, some great fights...Max Kellerman talks absolute bollocks, at one point he was suggesting the ref deducted a point from Bika to "help the Champion" despite a slow-mo replay of Bika's nasty headbutt, wud be great to turn off the commentary!
a rare good opponent for JC. It was a good win, good work. However, can you imagine if bika was Froch? It was good to see that JC couldnt do what he normally did; bully his opponent with his hand speed and pressure/conditioning. Bika is a tough guy
Calzaghe fought 5 former world champions and two future ones, Froch and Calzaghe were never going to meet plus Calzaghe beat Kessler and you know the rest. Big fan of Froch too but Calzaghe was also a true champion.
And those who think otherwise either come from Newport hamlet/wales village or are bigoted sophist apologists. All I hear him say is Lacey this and Lacey that. Aside from Kessler, who was a million miles better, that was he greatest accomplishment v a young fighter in his 'prime'. He was an over rated hype. The BHop victory was very very close and the showboating v old man, been KOd several times before (by, fuck me, glen Johnson!)RJJ was a tasteless self indulgent parody of a legend facing a real live monster a la Benn v McGlennan
No I can't say I fit into either of those disparate categories. Criticism of Calzaghe is one of the most tired and trite debates in boxing, he retired nearly 6 years ago, maybe it's time to move on to someone current instead of fights that are done and dusted. 46 people tried to defeat this "over-rated hype" and failed which makes your opinion rather redundant.
Bika had Calzaghe playing defense for most of the last 4 or 5 rounds. Sakio landed some hard shots in the wild melee during the middle rounds and Calzaghe became a bit apprehensive after that. I've never seen Calzaghe in that situation before but Bika is a rough customer. I think that Bika won some of the later rounds and overall the fight was pretty close,...........maybe 7-5 or 6-5-1 for Calzaghe.

Andre Ward is also one of the best but he he needs to be more active, time's running out for him.
Well
Ra HoWa yeah sure he did
Battyboylev quit
Joe slips a counter hook brilliantly at 18:42, Bika countered everything Joe threw putting pressure on Calzaghe`s offense.
P
Joe has the athlete's heart. Ie for people that don't know. Has a slow pulse relaxed. Pumps when action time comes.
Don king said ,calzaghe put on the greatest display of boxing that he ever seen when he beat his fighter Lacy.
Kings maybe right but Lacey was no great, just a hype job that never beat anyone above average
bika have fought alot of quality fights
at MW, he was a SMW virgin.
Well, I have not seen such a JC fight where he really struggled. But Joe got there on blood and guts and merit.
Fight of the year in my opinion.
'sloppy haymakers', worth the price of admission! Great announcing.
You obviously don't know anything about this sport.
Calzaghe was a world class talent yes, but to say he was the best ever is nonsense. No former boxer, boxing analyst or any objective fan for that matter would agree with that.
@@Somewhitedude666 you're right bernie i don't agree with it. joe was best super middleweight ever but this jonathan guy thinks mayweather had a chance of fighting joe haha. weight classes my friend. you just look stupid saying joe and mayweather would have been a fight at all.
R.I.P Enzo Calzaghe!
Calzaghe was out of shape in this fight , and still wasted him.
Round 1 @ 11:34 Bika trying to hyper extend Calzaghe elbow, and then countless other times throughout the match. And then there was the blatant head butts, he should have been docked more points.
Always enjoyed his fight true warrior .his record just as good as mayweather
Not his resume
He wouldn't beat Maywheather
At 24:03,.........near the end of round#4,.......Bika rammed his head into Calzaghe's eye, causing a cut. Joe got pissed off and went after Bika hard, beating the shit out of him for the last 15 seconds in the round.
Kellerman summer up the Calzaghe situation well....Calzaghe was too good for an American fighter to go to the uk to challenge and Calzaghe was such a big draw in the uk...why bother sending him to America where he wasn’t as well know.
Felt sorry for Joe, despite all his accolades, he could have fought and proved more convincingly how good he was. Toney, Jones (earlier), Darius M etc etc. I do think he was unique though and also a very underrated puncher. Very heavy handed.
I heard he beat Chris Byrd in the amateurs. Anyone know???
hands are heavy when he needs them to be. Before all the hand trouble his hands were always heavy.
Tony could had proved how good he was if he fought Joe.
Joe and Roy were just about the same age when they fought, But I'll let you tell it
@@miklo6907 3 or 4 years difference, pretty certain. Roy i think was 37 and Joe was 33 or 34 ? But it is similar. Some say it is huge ? don't really know what to make of it. But some say that Joe fought an OLD Eubank, when eubank was only 31 . i am certain of that GGG is 38 now i think and still pretty tough .
@@KevinKilgorepage Roy was 39 and Joe was 36. Both definitely out of their prime. But only one gets Geriatric pass. A 38 year old Floyd fought a 36 year old Manny . Seems one only get excuses when you lose .
Calzaghes dads great
Joe is my boy, Nice job! Love that end of Round 2!
Horrible fight for Joe, Bika was a dirty awkward customer.
Calzaghe out muscled more muscular guys!! when he squared upto robin reid they looked different weights as does Bika, freakish strengh. For the record the only fighter that came really close was the great hopkins but he was outworked just like the rest, sorry Jeffrey Haefner. For the record (despite being a Froch fan) Calzaghe would of out worked him too, to fast, to fit & too good a chin.
Gareoke 1 the problem is Carl Froch had power and he knew how to win while Joe Calzaghe chose not fight everyone in his division
@Mr T lol. He didn't break Robin Reid jaw. So what make you think he would had did that to Carl Froch
He didnt win a split decision against eubank he won unanimously j
The ref was atrocious and a nonstop chatterbox, it was like he was pulled from the stands and tossed into the ring.
Joe calzaghe the best !
This was one of Joes toughest fights.
That was not boxing. Wrestling and clinching more like it. Forbid clichés and let them slug it out. Rubbish fight.
Anyone hear after hearing about Benn vs bika
Here 😉
Yea
Why would he fight such a boxer? What a risk!
yeah, he`s only 40 versus benns 55, will deff watch it
Checking out the opposition lol
This guy was big and strong. He gave Calzaghe a good tussle. Good fight. Bika would have won more rounds if he was first more often. He was content to counter punch.
Bika landed 5 right hands in the 2nd round that weren`t mentioned.
Not Joes best performance but an enjoyable fight against a very strong, athletic rough house fighter. Joe although an amazing boxer also loved a scrap and showed his toughness.
Joe the best boxing in world
I’ve watched - and continue to watch - Calzaghe fights on a regular basis. The US commentators are always so ready to disrespect him or not give him due credit because he’s not American.
15:55 ...funny strut after dodging some haymakers.
End of round 2, Calzaghe strut was boss....
116-112 Joe, nobody looks good against Bika and Hopkins always gonna be ugly.
I totally agree with you man, they hold and clinch way too much!! Joe is the man!!
Dannon Mcknight Andre Ward seriously struggled against an ageing Bika
The white knight
At 2:27 and 2:26, Joe appears to have snuck in 2 left hands to the cup, just prior to Bika's low blow. But it's hard to know for sure. Feedback on this, guys, pls. Thanks.
One of Joe's toughest tests by far....But another W all the same.
I THOUGHT MIKEY VAN S REFEREEING WAS WEAK HERE ,TOO MUCH HOLDING BUTTING DIRTY FIGHT . SAIKA WAS A TOUGH GUY.
Sakio Bika was a tough customer,
Bika holding the whole fight..
Out of 46 wins Calzaghe slapped 34 opponents unconscious.
Not Joe’s best but just enough to get the job done. That was effectively with 1 good hand.
56:13 A split decision against Chris Eubank..
What is he talking about???
I remember this fight. Calzaghe went toe to toe but was getting outmuscled so switched it up to use his boxing to get the win.
Won clear, could of stopped him early to much holding by his opponent.
That was a difficult watch
Bika is the best for me in this fight
Joe holds too much...
best ever
Joe should have locked in that guillotine at 1.10. Even things up regarding straying outside of the queensbury rules
Skio strength was a challenging factor that caused Joe to struggle in the fight but nevertheless Joe surely won.
Imagine Calzaghe fought until 36 years old undefeated still on top while Floyd Mayweather Jr fought at the top until 40 also still undefeated
Calazghe vs Ward would have been amazing
Cal had alot of experience with inside fighters and great boxers, calzaghe would point him but Ward is so skilled so talented and a future Hall of famer so which one loses doesn't mean much both are Hall of famers
Ward would have neutralized Slappy Joe and started to take him apart by Round 8. Ward by competitive decision. Neither was a big puncher.
Ward easy
@@NorthernAnt Not easy, but he would grind out the win over Slappy Joe.
@@carlhewitt8820 yeha I think so
Calzaghe scored more but Bika did the cleaner work ... grotesque wrestling match ... Calzaghe wins by default
+itchygonads can't see that myself
Bika had all my respect
Much better opponent than Lacy. Lacy's main feature was charging with the head. Calzaghe should perhaps box more and brawl less..
Out of 46 fights Calzaghe with the exception of only 2 fights either won by UD,or TKO,KO
Weird connection here, the ref lives in my City and was in the next bed to my brother at St James hospital, you couldn't make it up.
breakit46 I really admired Enzo for instilling in Joe such a winner’s mentality.
Put it half speed and go to @31:30 Best referee dodge ever.
Home town cooking my arse, Mickey Vann one of the best referees in the world he saw what the commentators didn't
in fairness Bika was,nt a bad boxer ,just made that age old mistake of getting frustrated at his lack of progress and lashing out,,bit of a muted fight for joe imo
Wow joe is gaining in Height every time a see him in a new match up.. hes gone from 5 foot and 11 inches to six foot one now...
Joe the master craftsman, Theeeeeeeee dogs danglies.
Vince Vaughan at 3:07
😅😅
The only way to beat Calzaghe is to break his rhythm, and time him.
Sakio Bika does down as better fighter for Australia than Anthony mundine
Calzaghe really loved his profession didn't he... never work a day in your life :)
a rare good opponent for JC.
Big fan of Froch too but Calzaghe was also a true champion.
the quality of JCs opponents will always be questionable
Only to people who have no understanding of boxing.
Bika would have been a better wrestler.
0:45.. how if he has a loss to Sam Solamin is he UNDEFEATED, Lennox?
Calzaghe 👍👍👍
I think definitely the hardest fight for Joe. But Sakio was playing a bit dirty. Not as fast as Joe.
That ref 👌👌👌
Hard fight for Joe that guy was no Mug very evenly matched.
1:10.. ok, thanks, Jim
