    DGT Pi is a Raspberry Pi #chess clock / computer with Stockfish and other open source engines. It can connect to a DGT chessboard to play and analyze on Chessbase products. #DGT Centaur doesn’t require a smartphone or computer and has its own E-ink display and various modes of play. It uses LED circles to show the moves.

    I just got a DGT centaur off gumtree for 150aud and really like it, the big part is how it plays, it plays more like a human then any engine I’ve versed

      wow, that's a pretty good deal you got. I do think these would sell a lot better if the price was a bit lower. DGT Centaur remains one of my favorites. Not perfect but a lot of fun

  • @no_fb

    Is your mike off? You don't talk much so your comparison doesn't bring much info. It's worth knowing that the Centaur doesn't have RF pieces but simple contacts, so it cannot recognize the pieces as the DGT e-board or smart board. And unless you open it to add connectors to the Raspberry Pi, you can't export your games, change the books and so on. So a very dumbed down version with very few options.

  • @Cris01121
    @Cris01121 4 года назад +2

    They should have a way to update the centaur. I also don't care for non replaceable batteries. PC software solves all that however I don't like playing on a screen. The plastic dgt board is about the same price as the centaur but with more options. I ordered one so I can get back into playing chess.
    The cords do seem a bit annoying. How inconvenient is it rotating a wired dgt board to play black?

    I have the DGT Pi for my DGT bluetooth board but to be honest I rather just connect to my PC and Fritz. I use the DGT Pi in clock mode mainly..

      for analysis I agree. To be honest, I analyze my own games on my laptop without even the board and use Fat Fritz and lc0

      Gadgetify how exactly do you analyze your games? Do you just set up pieces on the computer screen in the same position your game was at a certain point and it tells you what moves you could/should have made?

      I suggest DGT Pi for more serious players whereas DGT Centaur is more affordable option of these two (at least based on what I paid) but it is not as flexible. DGT Centaur is great if you want to play against an adaptive engine without connection to a phone or computer

  • @mensaswede4028
    @mensaswede4028 4 года назад +2

    Well these things are getting better, but still some awkward things for the price point of the DGT pi. I mean the voice is silly slow, the screen on the DGT pi timer is like something from the 80's. Can't believe it's taken us until 2020 to get to this point, but we're almost there....

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  4 года назад +1

      I think the next generation is going to be much better. There is a lot of potential there. The price should probably be a bit lower though considering the engines are open source, hardware is Raspberry Pi too

    • @mensaswede4028
      @mensaswede4028 4 года назад +3

      Gadgetify I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for a nice set to actually recognize the type of piece (as opposed to the presence of “some” piece). Now that we’ve finally made it here, they screw it up with that ridiculous voice. Come on man, there’s only 64 squares and 7 types of pieces, so they can pre-record 71 sound clips and make it sound human... but no, they have that ridiculous text-to-speech running at 1/2 speed. It’s also silly using that DGT pi timer (for $250!) to interact with it. Although I see there is a Bluetooth interface. Do you have a video on how the BT interface works? Is there an app that basically replaces the need for the DGT pi timer? Is it any good?

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  4 года назад +1

      @@mensaswede4028 I couldn't test the Bluetooth option with the board because my board is not Bluetooth. It's the USB version. I'll see if there is any other way to do it over Bluetooth. Apparently, if you have a Bluetooth board, it automatically works with DGT Pi but I can't test it right now. I'll try to get my hands on one for a future video :)

    Is the Centaur fun to play with? I am also not so sure about the look&feel compared to a wooden board...

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  4 года назад +1

      I like the fact you don't need a computer. I wouldn't say it's the strongest engine. But maybe it's the adaptive engine, and I need work on my own game :) As far as the board, it is well made. I do wish the pieces were wooden like the DGT board.
      I think the main problem with Centaur is it's not the cheapest. If it was let's say $150, it'd be amazing for most people.

    I like the Centaurs size, display and led indication but it doesn't have piece recognition. For the DGT board I prefer an android tablet or smartphone with "chess for android" app over the DGT pi it's free and works really well. To me the main drawback of the DGT board is that it is so huge and heavy.

    Hi. How do you play black agains these dgt chessboards? It seems like the dgt chessboard always play the black pieces. Thank you in advance for your reply.

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  4 года назад +3

      OK, there are two boards. Centaur has option to easily choose white or black. The regular DGT chessboard if you connect it to your computer, you can pick white and black through the app (e.g. Chessbase Fritz, Komodo). With DGT Pi, you also have that option. I unfortunately forgot to show this.
      Next time I do a video, I will set the computer to play white.

    Is this the Smartboard and Centaur comparison? if so could you share your opinions and the differences between the two? eg, price, quality, ease of use, strengths etc.

    • @Gadgetify

      DGT Centaur is a standalone e-ink smart board with a custom engine. The DGT Board works with ChessBase, Arena, and other platforms. It lets you play against Fat Fritz and Komodo on your computer. It is used at tournaments (different versions of it)
      I got my Centaur for $350. The DGT Chessboard cost me around $600. The board doesn't have a computer built-in, so you will have to use DGT Pi or a cable to computer for interfacing top chess engines like Leela and Stockfish

    • @Zelkathz
      @Zelkathz 4 года назад

      Gadgetify any other alternatives built-in engine apart from Centaur would you recommend?

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  4 года назад +1

      @@Zelkathz depends on really what you want to do. Centaur is convenient. You got boards like Millennium ChessGenius,
      Square Off NEO & Swap which will ship later this year, King Performance chess computer, or simply just DGT Pi with a board.
      Square Off is actually pretty cool with Stockfish and robotic chess movement, so the next generation will be something to watch for

    • @Zelkathz
      @Zelkathz 4 года назад

      @@Gadgetify Thank you for the reply, that Centaur set is what I needed, it's simple (ready-to-play) with decent strong engine built-in, and the design is great as well, but with many unanswered questions and its overpriced (at the moment $400 + shipping fees outside of US) I'm still hesitated to actually get one. I have already inquire all the questions I have to the available dealers with worldwide shipping but no response so far.
      I just simply asking you if there are other alternatives to Centaur for a cheaper price. Also, are there any news regarding software update for the Centaur? I'm happy to wait since they ask a bit too much for the price as of now Thanks in advance!
